I would like to get your opinions regarding my PC...
So for quite a while now (maybe a year already...) my PC makes an unbearable noise... particularly when it's working (like when I'm using the eraser with Photoshop for example) but sometimes even when it seems to be doing nothing at all (no programs running or anything...)???
I've tried cleaning the CPU fan thoroughly... the first time it worked! But now I think it was just a lucky shot... I'm now a real fanatic of compressed air spray and brushes!!! ... Even though my fan is pristine, the computer still sounds like an airplane ready to take off... it's quite annoying!!!
Some friends told me that I should install a silent fan and maybe a silent case for my tower... others said it was probably my hard drive that had an issue...
I don't really know what to think... but I would really like to find a solution to rest my head and my ears!

(My PC is 2 years old, Pentium 4, 1024 MB, 400 MHz, Maxtor 160 GB 8 MB hard drive)

Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

If your computer makes a noise like a plane taking off, it means that it’s the fan, which is due to dust in the fan or overheating, meaning too many animations or games, etc.
And if it makes a noise like a train, it may mean that it’s the hard drive. Make sure there’s no CD stuck inside; otherwise, go to a professional, who might help you see more clearly.

I have the same problem; I would say it's between the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 777 (if we're going to advertise, we might as well not play favorites :)). To be more serious, I believe that among the possible explanations for this kind of noise, there's also the power supply. It also uses a fan and can cause a tremendous racket! Especially since if you open your central unit, you'll see it's a metal case, which can vibrate due to the fan's vibrations, causing the case and the entire central unit to vibrate as well, resulting in that metallic noise. Solution: buy a silent power supply; you can find them at a reasonable price (but remember to check compatibility with your setup).

I bought a 9400 GT (512mb) with a mini built-in fan, but now I have surprising noises at startup and at times.
My processor is only at 2.0 GHz, it may be due to this, but I find that 2.0 GHz is more than enough especially since it's an AMD Athlon dual core processor (dual processor).

The heat from the fan is normal (unless it reaches 60 degrees, then there is a problem =D)

I think simply cleaning your computer could solve the issue (mainly cleaning the fans, and for that I use "compressed air"; you can find it in supermarkets, I think, it is used to clean electronics...)

Personally, after a forced restart, I just killed one of my hard drives and since then my PC has been making a loud noise. I found a solution for this, if it can help: put your PC to sleep and then restart it. Stop it, put it to sleep, and after pressing a key on the keyboard, the PC restarts as if nothing happened. The processor fan tends to speed up to maximum on older motherboards. The 4 or 3 pin Molex for the fan. If you want it to be less noisy, move the Molex connector of 4 or 3 pins to another connector. Otherwise, change the motherboard.
