Restart code issue

Hello,
I sold my iPad on Le Bon Coin. I had emptied all its contents beforehand and removed the 4-digit code to reactivate it once it was on standby, so everything would be clean. The person who contacted me found it very good; we tested it together, and she wrote me a check. Usually, I don’t accept checks as I’m not sure about them, but this time I let it go and accepted her check. She sent me a message the next day saying that everything was okay and that she was very satisfied with her purchase.
But the following day, she sent me another text saying she couldn’t turn it back on after switching it off, that she needed a code to restart it. I explained to her that this seemed strange to me because after the reboot I performed, no code was requested anymore. I gave her the old code I used and also said she could try the initial code 0000 to see which one might work.
She told me that didn’t work, implied it was not her problem, and asked me not to cash her check as she would be willing to return the device to me.
Has anyone encountered this problem before? Can you advise me? Of course, I wouldn’t be willing to take it back since it was working perfectly, and especially since I have no idea what she might have done with it in the meantime.
I don't want to clash; the device had no hidden defects, and I think it’s an issue with her configuration or settings.
Thank you for taking a moment of your time to respond to me.
Configuration: Windows / Chrome 46.0.2490.80

I have never heard of a code appearing out of nowhere after a reboot.
Did you make sure to erase your Apple ID from the device?
I think this person set a code and they don't remember it (it's possible to unlock it via iTunes).
I'm not an expert on Apple products. Another solution is to go to a store and ask a salesperson for advice.

I think I successfully deleted my account, but I'm not very familiar with iTunes. And the reboot I did was only on the iPad itself and not through iTunes.

I had a 1st generation iPod Touch a few years ago, so my memories are a bit fuzzy. I believe that rebooting from the iPad does not erase the Apple account but only the data stored on the device.
