The messaging app is not working anymore!

Hello,
I have a little problem with my iPhone 5, the messaging app is not working anymore; as soon as I try to open it, a white screen appears, and then nothing happens, I return to the home screen! Or sometimes, when it stays open, I can't see any of my messages, and the phone doesn't recognize any of my contacts when I start typing a name (I hope that's clear...).
Anyway, I'm really stuck, if you have any solutions (other than buying a new phone...) I would appreciate it!

Your Messages app may be blocked, try this
- Open the NOTES app
- Type a letter
- Press the share button
- Then Messages
And send it to your phone number.
Wait 30 seconds and normally your Messages app should work again!
If it doesn’t work, try turning off and then turning on your iPhone
