Unable to connect modem via USB

Hello,
I'm on vacation and I'm using my Sosh smartphone (the first one) as a modem to connect to the internet on my computer.
I know how to do it, but when I try to do it via USB, it doesn't work. I think there's a setting that I must have changed by mistake.
It worked a long time ago...
It would help save my smartphone's battery.
Can you advise me?

    thank you jjpot. Yes, I know I need to plug in the USB before connecting. And yes, I can also work via Wi-Fi. It's more complicated to connect my phone to the power source.
    It's just that I'm almost certain there's just a setting to adjust, but which one????

      So I tried with my husband's Sosh. It doesn't connect via USB either, while there's no problem on his computer. So is it a configuration issue with the USB ports on my computer? Do you have a solution?
