Need help connecting my PC to WD TV

Hello,

I recently acquired a Western Digital multimedia gateway: WDTV (not the live version!) and I would like to access my files stored on my PC.
But it seems the gateway does not recognize my PC. It only sees my Livebox.

Moreover, when I check my network from the PC, I have 3 "computers" connected: my PC, my LIVEBOX, and my WDTV. I can access the contents of my WDTV from my PC, but I cannot open my PC folders from that same PC!!

I have tried a lot of things to share my files unsuccessfully (modifying network locations, creating a homegroup...) but I don't know much about networking.

I really need a helping hand! Thank you

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome

    Hi

So I can access the contents of my WDTV from my PC but I can't open my PC folders from that same PC !!

    I don’t understand your problem??

You want to go through network shares from your PC to access folders... from that same PC?

    Hello yo2263,

A glance here http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ultOQV (especially page 28 "Finding your content / Sharing a folder on your computer") would give you some good ideas ;) Is that the approach you followed?

Keep me updated on your progress, please :)
    Catch you later

Thank you for your help. Yes, that's exactly the approach I followed... but my PC does not appear in the remote devices that I could access from WDTV.
I think the problem is more with my PC being inaccessible on the network.

    Hi yo2263,

Could you clarify what "my PC that is inaccessible on the network" means, please? If it means that the PC is not connected to the network, then access to the shared folder from your WD TV would not be possible. For this to happen, both the media player (WD TV) and the computer need to be connected to the network. Once both devices are connected, you could take a look at page 32 of the aforementioned link ("Access to a shared folder" http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ultOQV) to find your favorite multimedia content :).

Let me know how you’re doing, please!

Hello everyone, I will try to clarify:
@kaumune: my PC is not visible from the WDTV. But even from my PC when I try to open a shared folder from that same PC (it's just a test!) from the "network" tab and then "lionel-PC" at the bottom left of the screen, I cannot open my folder and Windows tells me that the folder does not accept the connection.

@Sannin_WD: my PC is indeed connected to the network since it appears in the network, but I cannot open the shared folders and it remains invisible from another device on the network like the WDTV.

As for the manual, I skimmed through it but it is of no help to me... because my PC does not appear among the devices!

Start by disabling that damn residential group (leave the residential group)

Then you'll need to check how the permissions are set on the shared folder that you can't open from the PC sharing it (???)

but my PC doesn't appear in the remote devices that I could access from WDTV.

      What will it serve you?

    Hello yo2263,

Based on what you described, the issue seems to be with the sharing settings.

Have you had a chance to check the comment and advice from @kaumune?

I would suggest, just for the sake of testing, to create a new folder and place a few multimedia files in it (in different formats, if possible), share this folder ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US#1TC=windows-7 + some useful info here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US#1TC=windows-7 ) and, depending on your network configuration (and if needed), you could disable or adjust the firewall settings to see the shared folder on the network.

    Keep us posted, please :)
