Does the VCR play tapes in black and white?

Hello,

I don't know if I'm in the right section, but here it is:
I bought a new VCR for 5€ (a good deal at first glance) just to watch video tapes bought in the USA on my TV.
It's an AIWA HV-FX 5850 which is in PAL for recording and (NTSC Playback only) and MESECAM.

Setting with the remote AUTO/PAL/MESECAM

When I watch a US tape there are no problems, but for French tapes they play in black and white, which I think is normal, with a setting on Auto or PAL.
If I set it to MESECAM the tapes play in red?? Is it a malfunction or normal??

My question is I am looking to convert the PAL video signal to SECAM so that I can watch my French tapes on my TV.
Is this possible? And how to do it?
Thank you in advance for your help
Best regards

Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 33.0

If we look at what you wrote
    we have as standard
Pal and Mesecam and ntsc in playback mode
    we don't see secam
so it is quite possible that it is not secam

+1 The French standard for cassette recording and TV broadcasting is SECAM

MeSecam is for Africa, NTSC is for the USA/Japan, and PAL is for the rest of Europe

The VCR must not have been sold on the French market...

    Hello pacalvideo,
Thank you for your reply, indeed it is not SECAM, I wonder which country this VCR is from?
I heard there is an adapter to convert PAL to SECAM, I will check with a pro on Tuesday for info. It would be a shame not to take advantage of this new VCR.
That's the reason for its price of €5 (on Le Bon Coin)

impossible, the reader must be compatible with the cassette standard
      and it is a transcoder.

I'm really wondering which country this magneto is from?

It seems it was sold in Italy and today Aïwa has been bought by Sony, so finding information is going to be a hassle...

MESECAM found in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Tunisia, Morocco, Greece, and the Romandy region of Switzerland.

Alright, so if I got it right, the magneto just needs to go on a shelf.
Anyway, for €5 I have the remote that works great with my old Bluesky VCR, which didn't have a remote anymore, so that's all good.
    Thanks for your help "pacalvideo"
