Hello,
I have a professional website hosted with OVH, but the site is aging and I would like to update it.
Not being an expert in website development, I have decided to create a new site via Cargo Collective (with a paid subscription, it is also possible to have your own domain name).
I would therefore like to delete my old site hosted with OVH and find out what steps to follow in order to keep my domain name acquired from my old site to use for my new Cargo Collective site.
I may not be very clear... and I don't know where to start:
Should I first cancel and delete my old site with OVH?
Should I migrate a domain name? (point the DNS to the Cargo Collective platform)
I'm a bit lost and don't know where to start.
If you could provide me with some advice, that would be great.
Thank you in advance,
Kim

Hello
is your domain registered with OVH? Is it linked for free to your hosting contract?
If your domain is registered with OVH, there's no need to transfer it elsewhere
you need to point your domain to the IP of your hosting (A record pointing)
be careful, it takes some time to propagate.
and at your new hosting provider, associate your domain name with the hosting

A little thank you is better than great ignorance!
So if your issue is resolved, a reply with thank you wouldn't be refused.

A domain name alone without hosting is not free, of course. You need to contact OVH's sales service to see if you can just keep your domain name without hosting (that is to say, modify your contract); normally it should be possible, or else you can transfer it to another registrar like Gandi, for example.
A .com domain at OVH costs €6.99 excluding tax per year.
After that, regardless of the registrar, you need to point to Cargo using an A record (IP of your Cargo subdomain) because apparently with Cargo, since it's a subdomain, you cannot point to Cargo's DNS.
Also, know that it's possible on OVH to install a CMS like CMS Made Simple, WordPress, or PluXml, as well as a gallery module that seems to resemble Cargo.
After that, it's up to you

So if your issue is resolved, a response with thanks is not unwelcome.

Animostab, thank you very much for all these explanations.
Yes, I imagine it is possible to install new CMS via OVH, but that will be too complicated for me :-/
So it seems less complicated if I finish my site on Cargo, ask OVH to change my subscription to remove the hosting and keep my domain name.
I will then focus on Cargo and point my OVH domain name to their IP address. I have been told that the process is quite simple to do on the OVH site.
Thanks again for your help, because a few days ago I was a bit lost.
I wish you a good day,
Kim

Hello
Kim's email completely describes my situation.
Except that I am even worse with computers and not getting any help.....
So I don't even know how to create a blog or site using CargoCollective.
My site is also on OVH and since I can't modify it on my own, I would like to create another one on CargoCollective or elsewhere, as it has been recommended to me.

Hello,
thank you very much for your advice, everything seems clearer to me now.
In fact, on my last OVH invoice it states:
- Personal hosting for 12 months: about 28 euros
- Domain name renewal: free.
So indeed my domain name seems to be linked by contract for free.
But if I've understood correctly, once my new Cargo Collective site is finished, I will purchase new hosting from Cargo Collective, but I will keep my domain name created via OVH and point it to my new Cargo Collective hosting, am I right?
But by what means will I be able to redirect my OVH domain name?
Will I then be able to delete my old site?
Will I have to pay any additional fees at OVH?
I'm sorry for all these questions... not knowing all the ins and outs, I'm proceeding with caution for fear of making a mistake.
Thank you for your help.
