Hello,
While trying to move my iPhoto videos to another folder, all my videos turned into photos; the files have the same name but instead of ending with .mov, I now have .jpg, and they are just photos from moments of the video. I'm attempting data recovery with PhotoRec, but it's not yielding much...
I'm on Mac.
Help!!!!!! ^^

Yes, so I first wanted to move all my videos from iPhoto to put them into iMovie, that's when all my videos disappeared, but they were still on the hard drive because they were still taking up space. Then I managed to find them in the iPhoto folder in Finder, but when I tried to move them to another folder, they turned into photos.
I'm on OS X 10.9.4
It's a bit complicated, but I hope you can help me. I also tried data recovery with PhotoRec but I didn't find anything interesting.

ps: the videos worked fine on iPhoto and I didn't work on them with any software.

I didn't understand everything since from iMovie we have access to the entire iPhoto library, so I don't understand this "moving all my videos from iPhoto to put them in iMovie."
Anyway, let's say you created duplicates, you likely right-clicked on the iPhoto library which is usually located here:
Macintosh HD / Users / yourname / Pictures
and you must have clicked on "Show Package Contents" and then you rummaged around to find your videos... at that point, you moved them from one folder to another, but all of this from the same place? That is, in the package contents view of iPhoto Library?

You tortured yourselves for nothing since in iMovie we have access to everything, but I must admit that if I understood everything correctly, you must have created quite a mess ^^

Hello,
I experienced exactly the same thing as you.
I imported my photos and videos from my iPhone 6, (like a fool) I clicked on "delete from my iPhone".
I then opened iMovie to make a movie with all my faces, which are memories of vacations, and there.... Like you, my videos became photos.
Incredible but true.

Hello,
videos turned into photos just by moving them into a folder?

I've never seen that, could you elaborate on your procedure?
What's your version of OS X, did your videos work well on your iPhoto app or were they already weird?
Did you use any software to work on them?

Best regards

Yes, that's it, I did that because iMovie had trouble finding the videos directly in the iPhoto library.

Well, my friend, I don't really know what to suggest you do; I've never faced this kind of situation before..

There are a few tricks to fix any human and software errors on the iPhoto library, but I don't know if it will help you in your case.

Press "alt + cmd" and hold them down,
with your mouse click on the iPhoto icon that should be in your dock.

Try some of the proposed solutions..

Do the same with iMovie and delete the preferences.

That should fix the folder manipulation that was in the library.
Now, how to find your videos, I have no idea.. They haven't vanished; you need to remember where you moved them.
There's still the issue of converting film to image that I don't understand.

Hello,

Videos created by iPhoto or Aperture usually end with the .mov suffix, so search with EasyFind to find all the .mov videos in your directory (your session), then right-click to display them in Finder.

Example:

Once you have the correct file(s), you can move them to another folder, either by copying them via drag-and-drop while holding the alt key, or by a straight move. You can then re-import them into iPhoto or iMovie.

And indeed, unless you are an expert, you should never manually intervene in the iPhoto or Aperture libraries.

EasyFind, free, is available in the App Store or here:

Good luck

Ah thank you, we were waiting for a chief like you Francis :)

Does the easyfind search look inside the library?
I didn't suggest it because I thought searches didn't go through the iPhoto library..

I will do a test at home to see, thanks for him ;)

For EasyFind to find everything, you need to check the search box inside the packages :)

The issue is that I had 250 GB of missing videos on my computer, you know? :/

They cannot have disappeared, it's impossible... A computer is very dumb... It's 1 or 0, period. There's no ambiguity possible...
Your videos are where you moved them. Don't you remember which folder you moved them to?

I can't do anything else for you except advise you to open a Finder window and go to "All My Files," then scroll down and look for "videos." If your videos have been taken out of the iPhoto and iMovie library, then they are there... Otherwise, keep searching for the videos you moved manually...

Good news, I managed to recover my videos from iPhoto, but as soon as I try to play them, iPhoto displays "The operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -54)."

Basically, the thumbnails have come back in iPhoto, but the video files behind them are not there.

Yes, that's why you shouldn't touch the hidden folders of iPhoto..
In fact, nobody understands iPhoto, it's a bit like the cloud ;)
It creates, for each edited image, a copy of the original, and a thumbnail.. Good luck for the rest, it's beyond me.

Haha I'm struggling with iPhoto...
Thank you for your help anyway.

Try to find a thumbnail, a photo, or a video that could be one of your lost videos.. Copy the file name and start a search to see if there are others on the Mac.. Hopefully, you’ll be able to locate your videos that way.

A thumbnail? What do you mean?

Thank you for this app, it helped me find some aliases that were in iMovie but still not my original videos. :/

When you click on an alias to request information, the alias indicates the location of the original if it still exists, and if the original has been moved in a "normal" manner.
If the alias does not open the file, it can help to identify its last valid location.
