Good evening,
After numerous attempts with various format converters,
mediacoder, avsconverter, formatfactory, freevideoconverter, etc...
I always get the same error message from avistep:
"unable to open, check if the file is not damaged"
Where is the error? Is it a codec issue... but I've already tried plenty?
Thank you for your advice and ideas,
best regards.

Hello,
I'm sending you a link to a ZIP file containing different small files made for Regressi or Avimeca, a software similar to Avistep it seems, according to this page: http://dl.free.fr/getfile.pl?file=/0VVjwU6T
If it works with these files, then you will be able to determine their codecs with portable MediaInfo, and convert your files using one of these codecs ;)
Portable MediaInfo: https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=884
RGB (without compression, achievable with VirtualDub for example) or MS Video (Format Factory and/or Free Video Converter) could probably work.
SUPER might be the software offering the most options regarding codecs, but its installation comes with adware and other nasty little bugs, so cleaning up afterward is essential.
Best regards

Thank you Ziggourat for your long and detailed response.
Unfortunately, I'm unable to download the Zip file from the page:
http://dl.free.fr/getfile.pl?file=/0VVjwU6T; the "validate and download" button is not active...
Looking more closely, with "MediaInfo", one of my old avi files, which works with Avistep, shows 1RGB. But this RGB option doesn't appear in FreeVideoConverter, FormatFactory, or VirtualDub...
Thank you, I'm making progress, just need to find where the RGB encoding option is in these various software.
If you have any more insights...
Best regards, -
In VirtualDub, it's the first option under Video --> Compression: (Uncompressed RGB/YCbCr). It seems to be the default in VirtualDub.
You could also try the MS Video (MS MPEG-4 v2 or v1) which you can find in Free Video Converter or Format Factory as mentioned earlier.
The other codecs for my small files are Cinepack and Indeo 4.
As for downloading my small file, I tested it on Firefox, IE, Chrome, and Opera and I didn't have any issues... so which browser are you using?

Good evening Ziggourat,
I’m using Firefox...
I must be a bit foolish because VirtualDub refuses to open the original .mov files and none of the converted .avi files...
There is indeed an option, the 4th one under “video,” with (Uncompressed RGB/YCbCr), but it first needs to open the file...
In Format Factory, I can't find any trace of RGB or MS Video. There’s only RMVB, H264, DivX, Xvid, and WMV2...
In Free Video Converter, there is MS Mpeg4v1 or 2, but nothing works... whatever choice is made, I see above the movie after conversion the final codec choices for audio and video = H264 and AAC, strange...
Sorry for not making faster progress, thank you again for your suggestions.
Best regards. -
Ah, I didn't know your files were MOV, see tutorial: http://www.virtualdub-fr.org/2008/tutoriaux-96-convertir-des-fichiers-movrmwmv-en-avi.html
In Format Factory (click on it to enlarge):
I think the audio doesn't matter for Avistep software since it's a pointing software, so if possible, it shouldn't be included in my opinion.
You could also try converting with the M-JPEG codec for AVI because this type of file opens in Avimeca anyway.
Finally, you can find a number of AVI files constructed with different codecs, including RLE or DivX 5, which in theory should open in Avistep: https://mcpd.pagesperso-orange.fr/Avistep3/index.html
You should have the K-Lite codec pack installed according to that same site.
I tested version 2.1.1 (then versions 3 and later are paid...) and the only files that wouldn't open were those encoded in Indeo 4 or XviD on my end.
PS: I would have suggested in a PM to convert your videos which shouldn't be too big and long, but since you're having trouble retrieving files on DLFree, I don't think it would be feasible... too bad.
