Convert 4k mp4 to 4k avi for video editing

It's not the resolution that matters (4K) but the codec used.
Mo, since your file is in mp4 at 4K, I suspect that the camcorder is a Samsung. If that's the case, the codec is HEVC H265, which is not supported by consumer editing software or free converters.
The problem with new codecs is their compatibility.
