Nero Vision 12 create a movie with chapters

Hello,

I have a big problem understanding Nero Vision 12.
I don't know how to create a DVD movie with 3 titles so that I can choose, once the DVD is finished and inserted into the home player, the sequences I want to watch.
Let me explain:
My daughter has been doing dance shows all year, so I filmed her. I ended up with a lot of recordings, for example in December 2013, she had a show and I have 3 recording sequences (in Nero Vision they call them "menus"), the same goes for March 2014 where I have 11, and in June I have 32.
I would like to create a DVD with 3 chapters; the first would be titled December 2013, in which I would arrange the three videos, a second chapter that I would name March 2014, where I would put the 11 video items, etc. But here’s the thing, when I go to Nero Vision and import the files one by one, they all appear in the list and I don't know how to group into one title the ones from December 2013, the same for those from March 2014, and likewise for June 2014. Basically, I would like to end up with a burned DVD that, when inserted into the home player, offers me three viewing choices on the homepage: "December 2013," "March 2014," and "June 2014," with the individual recorded videos inside each chapter.
I’m not sure if I’m being clear, but I doubt it; I’m having a hard time understanding it myself, but I’m fighting through it and I think the pros among you could help me achieve this kind of film....

Thank you for your help

Hello and happy to see you again ;)

I only have Nero 9 but I assume the principle is the same for NeroVision 12 or NeroVideo 12.
So, here’s the structure of what you can do with "chaptering" in Nero: https://www.cjoint.com/14jn/DFqoAOnFbIM_nerovision_4_menu.jpg

In practice, it looks roughly like this:
It’s in the Content window that most of the preparation for your project will take place.
    1) you import all your files from December 2013 (Title 1) which you group together using the Join button on the right to obtain a single file.
Then you position yourself under the preview window and create your different chapters with the Chapter --> Add a chapter button, moving around the Timeline with the Position cursor.
You do the same to obtain your 3rd chapter for Title 1.
The automatic chapter search could also work but personally I prefer doing it manually.
This is a crucial step in creating your project!
    2) You repeat the operation for March 2014 which corresponds to Title 2 with your 11 video files.
    3) Same for June 2014 and your 32 files
Well, maybe the automatic detection will be useful here because doing it manually might be a bit tedious but I’m not sure. If you use it, you may need to correct the automatic creation to remove small errors...
    * One note: since you have a lot of video files, if their durations are a bit long, your project may not fit on a single DVD. In that case, select DVD 9 or DVD DL (Double Layer) at the bottom right and burn onto this type of disc.

So, all that’s left is to refine your menu in the Edit menu window (I think you know how to do that) to have your DVD-Video project with your 3 Chapters and sub-chapters.

I had already explained the procedure in one of my previous posts, but since I can’t remember where it is, I’m posting a few images of the procedure I did back then:

Edit: I just found it again, and I had already explained the method broadly here, I thought your username sounded familiar... : https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-26182659-nero-vision-probleme-de-capacite-gravure#13

While consulting the manual on the Nero website, I find that despite the additional options in the higher versions, the basic functioning principle of NeroVision/NeroVideo hasn't changed much since Nero 6.

    1)
a- For the names of Chapters/Main Titles:
In the Content window, you position yourself on the name you have (which should be the first of your attached files) and right-click --> Rename to write the name you want.
You can also do this directly by selecting and modifying the name.

b- If you also want to change the names of sub-chapters, proceed as above, that is, right-click --> rename.

c- For the DVD name, it happens at the end when you choose to create your DVD in folders, as an NRG image, or to burn it.

    2) To define the chapters (page 22/24 of the manual):
Once you have attached your files in the Content window, you position yourself under the preview player.
Below you have the mini Editing Table, with a positioning slider, in the shape of a small rectangle. This is the only one you should move, either with your mouse cursor, or with the directional arrows on your keyboard, or by using the time indicator in hours, minutes, seconds, or even by using your mouse wheel.
Personally, I do it with the mouse cursor to quickly define the area where the chapter marking will be placed, and to properly position the Nero cursor, I use the directional arrows that scroll the video. It also works with the wheel or the time indicator or using the next frame scrolling and/or play/pause.
In short, choose what suits you best ;)
Once you have defined where to place your chapter, you right-click --> Create a chapter to place a dark blue marker in my case.
The operation can be tricky, so I use the Nero window in full screen.

In my opinion, it is unnecessary to go through Edit because it mainly serves for cutting a file in this case. But if you have to use it, look at page 52 of the manual where it seems to be explained. This is indeed a difference between the versions that I had not noticed before :/
The Edit section mainly serves to create a video project to obtain files in AVI, MP4 or other types, I think. It is not really necessary in the context of creating a DVD-Video or Blu-ray/AVCHD disk project.

    3) Formatting in the Edit Menu window.
a- By choosing the pre-established templates, you limit your possibilities to configure your menu as you wish. After that, it's a choice I don't challenge because there are 3D menus, for example, which are quite nice.
If your name is too long and overflows the box that you cannot change, I fear that you have no other choice but to shorten it, but maybe by playing with the font you could make it shorter.
For that, position yourself on the desired text and double-click to display a new box allowing you to modify the name.
Also indicate not to display the numbers of the chapters/subchapters because they are optional, but it is up to you to decide... ;)

b- If you choose a Custom Menu with the advanced feature, it allows you to configure frames, texts, objects, or others, but the menu will be less pretty/attractive than in the pre-defined templates.
I also started by choosing them.. and still do so sometimes, even if now I mainly go to the essentials for my videos and choose not to make a menu in certain cases.

PS: The page numbers of the manuals I give you may be approximate because I retrieved two versions of the manual for NeroVideo 12, it seems, and I've only gone through one of them since they are more than 160 pages after all...
I manage to find my way because since I’ve had a computer (about 10 years), I've always had Nero, and it's by practicing and reading the help or other tutorials online that I've come to know this software. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect”, and that’s what I do.
As for vocabulary, it’s a bit the same, it’s by reading a lot that I noticed that certain terms kept coming up, and thus no matter the software, they were basically always the same.

    Hello Zigourrat,
Your username rings a bell as well :-)
Yes, you had explained to me how to manage the tutorial previously, but I've changed software versions and it's quite different, and I admit that even with a tutorial it's complex.
In any case, thank you a thousand times because it's the "attach" button that is a great help to me and that I had forgotten. Since I don't often do video editing, or rather never, the information doesn't stick in my memory. I kept a printed copy of your responses, but they are in a moving box! Yes, I'm changing location soon, lol, and I haven't found our previous conversations on the site.
Now, back to the interesting subject, I've finally got my 3 distinct parts. I manually searched for the chapters of each part, but Nero finds 17 in the first folder when there are only three, so I have to do it manually, but I'm stuck....I can't open the mixing table :-(, I know, I'm hopeless.
I also wanted to rename the DVD of the movie, but when I go to "edit" and rename it, the last folder gets renamed even though it's not highlighted; I've done it four times now! Boo....
Afterwards, formatting is tricky for me because sometimes my titles go beyond the frame, and adjusting the frame doesn't work; of course, you would tell me that even though you advised me against choosing the pre-set models, I can't help it because I don't know how to do otherwise.
Indeed, the project is too long to fit on one DVD, so I will have to make a second one. I wonder how you keep track of all the editing functions... The problem I have is that I confuse menus, chapters, sequences, files....But I'm going to keep trying! Thank you for coming back to explain again. I'll try not to forget anything. :-)
Have a good day, my brain is already smoking....

I see that you still know a thing or two.
Well, I managed to tinker and the DVD is currently being burned, but I am far from mastering formatting and creation, so I'm going for the simplest option.
I think I made a mistake because the summary says that I created three chapters, so I modified it because ultimately for this second DVD it’s better to put the menu titles, anyway it’s a mess, if the result doesn’t suit me I’ll start over....
I’m going to print this new message, because having it on paper sounds good for studying :-)
Thank you for your help hoping I won’t need to come back to it. Thank you very much for your patience and availability.
