Question

Hello, I'm reaching out to you because I'm having a little issue with my computer.  I have a TOSHIBA Satellite (great! :p)  During some startups, I get a little message asking for a password "hdd password". I had set this password, but unfortunately, due to my poor memory, I've forgotten it (great! :p)  I tried to reset my BIOS to see if that could help... (no luck)  Then I opted for flashing my BIOS... unfortunately, when I try to access the BIOS to check the boot sequence (to boot from my boot disk with my new BIOS on it), the BIOS refuses to launch...  I was advised to do a complete reinstall of my "Micro$oft Windobe" system, do you think that could solve the issue of my HDD password (to get rid of it...) Hello, if your password does not allow you to access your BIOS but you can log into Windows, reinstalling it won't change anything. However, remove the motherboard battery for 1 or 2 hours, and then put it back in; this way, you will have reset the BIOS and the password should be gone.

To reset the BIOS, there is no need to remove the battery for 1 or 2 hours... it is enough for the capacitor to discharge... which takes less than 10 seconds by connecting the + and - of it... and as I mentioned in my initial post, I have already reset the BIOS, it is not the BIOS password but the HDD password, a BIOS reset would indeed have removed the BIOS password... but that is not my case... :(

Hello, The "hdd password" is stored on the hard drive (eeprom), the bios has nothing to do with it.

Hello,
it's simple my dear, just follow these steps one by one:
-Unplug the hard drive
-turn on your laptop and enter the BIOS.
-Once you're in the BIOS, plug in your hard drive and go to the first option to detect it.
-Once the drive is detected.
-Go to the security section to enter the HDD PASSWORD.
-and enter a new password.
-Save the BIOS settings and restart.
-It will ask you for the password, enter it and it will work.
-Once that's done, restart your PC and enter the BIOS and disable the HDD PASSWORD.
Everything will be fine.
Tested 1000% by myself.

I have the same problem with my laptop. It's a Toshiba; I get a HDD Password message that appears at startup and I can't find where the BIOS battery is to reset it.
I tried to start the machine without the hard drive and then connect the hard drive hot; but it’s only a SATA that is detected only at startup.

How to use the hard drive password on my Toshiba laptop?

The following Toshibas allow you to protect your data with a function in the BIOS: the hard drive password:
Portégé R100;

Satellite Pro M10;

Tecra M1.

This password protects your data from unauthorized users. Without the password, it is impossible to access the hard drive. The password is stored on the encrypted hard drive, thus it is part of the hard drive itself. When you install the hard drive in another laptop, the password will still be present. The password locks access to the hard drive, but not the data itself.
In the case of the Satellite Pro M10 or the Tecra M1, it is also possible to install this password on a hard drive installed in a Slim Select Bay.

How to install this password?
The password is installed through the system BIOS setup (press the ESC key during startup) HDD PASSWORD

HDD = Built-in HDD / Second HDD
HDD Password Mode = User Only / Master + User
User Password = Not Registered

Master Password = Not Registered

You can choose a 'User Only' or 'Master + User' password.
Use the arrow keys to navigate to the desired option,
then change this option by pressing the space bar. The password can contain a maximum of 16 letters or numbers.
If you set a password at the hard drive level, the following message will display on the screen:
Warning: If you forget your password, you can NOT access your HDD.

How to change or delete the password?
Again, go to the BIOS setup. Select the option you want to change. Then enter the old password first, and the new one afterward. If you want to delete it, press the 'ENTER' key.
If you are using a Master Password and a User Password, it is only possible to remove the user password after you have first deleted the supervisor password.

IMPORTANT:
If you mistakenly enter the password 3 times, the machine will shut down automatically;

There is NO solution to recover data from a hard drive for which you have forgotten the password, not even at a Toshiba repair center;

If you use this password without paying too much attention, you put your data at risk.

Toshiba does not accept responsibility for your data on the hard drive when you use this hard drive password.

Hello everyone

I find myself in the same situation
my "acer aspire 5735z" is asking for a HDD password that I don't know.

I lifted the cover and disconnected the battery.
It doesn't change anything.

Having read the few interventions on this topic makes me think that the only solution left for me is to buy a new hard drive. (and a new Vista?)

The machine is just a few days old and I hadn't taken the time to burn the recovery CDs yet.

Can someone tell me how I can obtain a Vista without having to pay for it? (the codes from mine are not valid for another, I presume)

I'm in the same boat as you; I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 that no longer recognizes the password. I've tried several tricks, but to date, there's no obvious solution for this problem. The manufacturer of my HDD is HITACHI SATA 160GB.

Salut Aniss, alors j'ai suivi les étapes que tu nous as données pour changer le mot de passe du disque dur, mais quand je retire le disque dur et que je le remets, il n'est pas détecté après que je redémarre le PC (j'ai un portable Toshiba T2080). Du coup, je n'ai rien fait quand je le redémarre.

the message is old but in any case, it can still be useful to someone.
I had the same problem with a Toshiba Satellite: on startup, it displayed
"PASSWORD HDD"

For my part, I just had to unplug and replug the hard drive (the panel is under the PC, all you need is a Phillips screwdriver or a knife) for the problem to be solved.
