Under Windows, you need to go to the control panel, sounds, manage audio devices or Windows+R then
There, instead of selecting the speakers, you click once on Output and select Default...
You're all set!!
mmsys.cpl

No sound on HDMI connection
config: Hp Pavilion D7 2230 us PC, Sony LCD HDL-46-V5500 TV, Windows 7 64-bit
I just struggled with this problem and searched the forums without success. After some tweaking, I found the solution on my PC:
HDMI cable connected
- Control Panel
- Manage audio devices
the LCD does not appear
Select any of the devices / right click / check enable disabled devices
The LCD appears: select it and confirm enable
Sound is successfully transmitted to the LCD speakers
Good luck if you're still looking for a solution

Hi
I had the same problem with my LCD screen that I connected to my PC via HDMI.
Here’s the solution.
In Vista, Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Manage Audio Devices
In the Playback tab, double-click on your PC's speakers to configure them.
Go to the Advanced tab, and uncheck the box "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device". It's because of this exclusive control that other devices, including the TV speakers, don’t work.
Good luck

The one and only solution!!!! (at least for me...)
Under the sound device manager section, right-click and SHOW DISABLED DEVICES. Then enable the device in question. And there you go, it works. Don't forget to close and restart the relevant software (vlc...) for the change to take effect. Then plug in your HDMI cable!

Thank you for all this information that helped me troubleshoot: how did I do it? (I'm on XP with a Toshiba PC and a 40-inch Samsung LCD TV, all connected with a single HDMI cable)
1- In the control panel -> display -> in the advanced settings of the graphics card, set the TV as the main display
2- In the control panel -> sound, in the audio tab - default unit line, set to HDMI Device (and not Conexant audio speakers which was set by default for me)
3- In VLC, audio toolbar then audio device then select different devices to see which one works depending on the source: for example, for me the SPIDF didn't work, it was the stereo device that needed to be selected...
Good luck
See you later

If it helps, I solved my problem as follows:
Samsung T220 MD screen connected via HDMI to Asus P5Q Turbo motherboard with great picture, but no sound....
What was missing was an HDMI driver for the ATI Radeon 4850 graphics card.....found here:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/hdmiaudio-xp
Since then, it's working!!

Good evening,
I just want to back up what "Edouard" said.
I have an HP laptop and a brand new Philips HD Ready TV.
I connected them using an HDMI cable, and like many, the picture is excellent but there’s no sound!
I fiddled around (quite briefly) with an audio cable, jack, but nothing worked.
I consulted several forums, and finally found: I just needed to configure the PC (which runs on Vista):
control panel -> audio hardware -> sound -> playback tab -> output -> set as default
and there you go, sound + image = excellent moment ahead!
Have a good end of the day everyone.

To get HDMI sound from PC to TV on Windows 7, first connect your TV to the PC via HDMI, then go to Control Panel - Hardware and Sound, and click on Sound. A new window will pop up, and you will see your speakers and your TV with its brand name displayed.
Then, right-click on your speakers and other audio devices on your computer and click on disable; the sound will automatically switch to your TV via the HDMI cable. To restore the sound once you're done connecting to the TV, right-click again and enable them, and the sound will switch back to your PC speakers automatically.

I also encountered this problem, namely 2 screens: a 19-inch monitor via VGA and a Pioneer plasma via HDMI
After setting the audio output under Vista to HDMI by default, still nothing.
In fact, the issue arises because most graphics cards with HDMI ports do not manage both image and sound at the same time.
Therefore, you need to check the back of the PC to see what audio options the sound card of your computer provides and use another audio output to send the sound, either jack => RCA or RCA => RCA.
Then do not forget to reset the default audio output to the output you have chosen in the sound settings of Windows.
Finally, this requires having an audio input at the back of the TV or the amplifier you are using for sound.
That's how I managed, so good luck to everyone, and thanks to Connectic Marseille for giving me all this advice.
P.S. If you have an optical output at the back of your PC and your TV, the process also works with an optical cable, of course.

Hello everyone
Hello, after hours of struggle, I found thanks to this forum:
2 new devices: SAMSUNG LCD TV and Packard Bell laptop running Windows 7
Control Panel / hardware and sound / sound / manage audio devices
Windows 7 recognizes the SAMSUNG - the speakers - Realtek digital output
You need to click on SAMSUNG. The grayed-out "default" dropdown becomes accessible. You need to click on "set as default device".
The sound from my MP3s is played through the TV. I unplug the HDMI cable and the sound comes through the laptop.
Hoping this will be useful to you.

I had the same problem: no sound on Sony TV via HDMI from Compaq.
Control Panel -> Sound hardware -> Manage audio devices -> In the Playback tab select the HDMI device then Properties -> Advanced statistics tab -> Test different sound formats to find one that works.
Hoping this brings you a solution.

Open vlc then go to Tools / Preferences, click on Audio / Output Modules, select Win32 WaveOut Extension Output from the list, and check Use s/DPIF when available, then save. Turn off and restart the computer. It works.
I clicked on the speaker next to the clock, right-clicked, clicked on Playback, clicked on NVDiA HDMI Output and set it as default. I double-clicked on NVDIA HDMI Output and in the Advanced tab, I clicked on the small arrow and set it to 16 bit, 48000 HZ (DVD Quality) and it worked. Good luck! I searched for a long time.
The correct method is as follows:
Procedure on PC for HDMI to LCD TV with sound and image
Example for watching a movie or other
- Connect the HDMI cable between the PC and the TV
- Turn on the PC
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI source
- Configure the PC for display:
- Start, settings, control panel, display
- Settings tab
- It appears:
- 1- Plug and Play screen ...
- 2- Plug and Play screen...
- Set the resolution of screen number 2 (for example 1920x1080) for Full HD, by moving the slider
- If screen number two is detected in advance or by default, it displays in the small window:
- 1- Plug and Play screen...
- Check extend the desktop
- Apply
- Configure the PC for audio:
- Start, settings, control panel, sounds and audio devices
- Audio tab
- In the window: audio playback-default device, choose HDMI Device, instead of
Realtek HD audio output
- Apply
Then, if the viewing screen appears on the PC but not on the TV, click and hold on the blue top, to move it to your TV screen, and surprise it slides onto the TV, and for the mouse, move it beyond the PC screen towards the TV, enlarging the frame.

For those with an HDMI/DVI input, remember the compatible jack audio input next to that HDMI/DVI port.
So a Jack/jack cable (male on both sides) from the headphone output of the computer to this input works. (Test all your audio inputs if you have multiple ones.)

Hi
I had the same problem as most of us, meaning no sound to the TV (mine is a Philips), even though it had always worked.
My setup / under Vista, an Nvidia 9500GS connected via HDMI to the Philips. I tried pretty much all the solutions proposed on this site, and the one that resolved my issue was updating my graphics card driver (directly from Nvidia's website).
Another point, as far as I'm concerned, compared to what many of you suggest, which is to select HDMI output (after selecting control panel, sound and devices, playback), I didn't have that choice available, and in my case, my only choices were either the speakers, the headphone output, or Realtek Digital Output (which is a digital RCA output, so for me, no HDMI option....)
Hoping to share my experience, good luck and above all, equip yourselves with patience.
Best regards, nico

Hello everyone!
I had the same problem as you, and I found that it depended on the player you use.
I did indeed check the HDMI Output as default.
Then I tinkered with the VLC options... Tools > Preferences > Audio tab. And there, I checked "Use SPDIF if possible."
Since then, everything has been working perfectly (except for a few lines that move up and down on my screen). So I hope this helps you a bit...

Personally, I have a Packard Bell running Windows 7. I've connected a VGA/HDMI adapter for the video and an RCA cable in the front (headphone jack) for the audio. But as Édouard pointed out, you need to go to Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Sound / Manage Audio Devices and check that the speakers and Realtek Digital Output have a green icon underneath. If not, click on the output and select Set as Default Communication Device. Lastly, don't forget to uncheck the box "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" found in "Manage Audio Devices / Properties / Advanced for the speakers and the output (I had previously updated my drivers)."
On computer, HDMI graphics card blocks TV speaker outputs
We connect a €4 audio adapter to the sound card with RCA output
female + a (red and white) cable through an amplifier or home theater
we select the audio output on our amplifier and it works!
this is just my solution....other solutions certainly exist, see you!

Finally, I have sound from my plasma through the HDMI cable.
Finally got the TV sound working to watch a movie!!!
