DDR3 1333 and 1600 RAM Compatibility

Let me explain my situation: I had 6 GB of RAM clocked at 1333 with my old hardware, and I bought 8 GB of RAM clocked at 1600. The problem I have is whether I can put both in my new setup. Will I face any compatibility issues? Or should I just use my new 1600 MHz sticks? Thank you in advance for your responses.

Hi, I don't think you'll have any compatibility issues with your motherboard, but it's definitely not recommended. Different RAM sticks mean different memory modules, and you might even risk having blue screens.

The best thing is, if your motherboard allows it, to buy directly 2 sticks of 8 GB each. That will give you a total of 16 GB instead of 14 GB, and you can also set them up in dual channel while saving space and making installation easier. The first thing to know is the model of your motherboard, as you need to check whether it supports 1600 MHz or not.

By the way, why do you want so much RAM? What is it intended for? If it's for building a gaming PC, I can recommend some very good RAM, but it also depends on your budget.

It's to build a gaming PC, in fact I had 3 sticks of 2 GB, so 6 GB in DDR3 1333, and I bought 2 sticks of 4 GB in DDR3 1600. My motherboard is an ASUS P6T SE.

If it's for a gaming PC, your motherboard is a good reference. Even though socket 1366 is starting to be outdated, you have good hardware with the motherboard. However, in this specific case, I seriously advise against mixing RAM; you will only lose power at all levels, not just in terms of RAM, since the frequencies of your old RAM will bottleneck everything. Keep in mind that when you have high-end equipment, if you pair it with old hardware, you automatically throttle the new equipment. For example, if you put a good processor like a 3820 in there and your RAM is slower than the processor, the processor will inevitably lose power. The same goes for your graphics card; the more powerful it is, the more good quality and fast RAM you'll need to make full use of it, especially with a good processor that can manage it.

What you should have done is permanently remove your old RAM and buy 3 or 4 sticks of 4 GB each. Your motherboard does not support 8 GB sticks; it only supports 4 GB maximum. It's a little more expensive, but you gain in power, comfort, and utility.

That's what I thought, thank you for your replies. My old setup was at least 4 years old
Motherboard: ASUS p6t se
Processor: i7 920 2.66 GHz
Video card: twintech geforce gtx 295
RAM: 6 GB (3x2 GB) DDR 3, 1333
Now I'm updating my setup a bit, I just changed the RAM and the video card since I was limited by DirectX 9. I installed an MSI geForce gtx 770 twin frozr gaming OC edition and 2x4 GB of RAM in DDR 3, 1600. I plan to change the motherboard and the processor later.
