Riso HC 5000 duplicator

Question

Hello everyone, I am looking for a multifunction black and white and color photocopier for the network equipment of my college, which also works as a printer and a scanner: I have heard about the Riso 5500 and I would like to know if the users of this forum are satisfied with it (device price, cost per page, potential issues, print quality and speed...). I should mention that my college's equipment totals around fifty PCs running different versions of Windows, from 95 to XP, so this network is quite disparate. On behalf of the students, I thank everyone who would be willing to share their experience with me.

I simply base myself on the information collected from users of this type of material. It should be noted that this shit is actually a high-speed inkjet printer that does not meet users' expectations; for example, the quality can only be present if you use the paper sold by Rizzo and if you are at minimum speed. Then, the scanner that acts as a copier is actually a remote scanner, so the processing times are horrible. Lastly, it is impossible for users to know the number of pages produced because the counter reading consists of 28 lines that even Rizzo cannot explain what they correspond to. Just know that I’m giving you the information that I have right now in my head, but there are other problems, and frankly, it is better to invest in a fast color laser multifunction tool that will meet all your expectations.

PS: Another thing, since it is inkjet, the prints do not withstand UV and weather well.

Well, let's stop talking about nonsense. It's possible that the product doesn't suit you, or that you were misinformed:
Indeed, it's an inkjet printer, and the quality is designed to be sufficient, knowing that RISO (not RIZZO) offers the cheapest copies on the market to allow organizations that wish to communicate differently from simple black and white, while managing their volume and budget.
For the paper, there are two different types of paper that are manufactured specifically for the HC 5500 but mainly for inkjet printers. Once again, this tool is not made for quality printing; I take the example of a school that doesn't want to explode its reprographic budget but wishes to open up color options to teachers for better pedagogy, or even to present a different image of the establishment. Two choices are available: a copier, which will definitely be of quality but will cost between €100 and €75 per thousand copies, for classes that often last no more than a few weeks. Meanwhile, with the HC 5500, the cost per page can be nearly 45% lower than these options. So obviously, quality is different, but would an establishment where budgets are tightened (due to the economic situation) not prefer to make color copies at a lower cost...?
For printing speed in high quality, it remains the same: 120 ppm in A4, 98 ppm in duplex A4, 96 ppm in A3, and 76 ppm in duplex, both in black and white and in color... Once again, in an establishment, teachers queue in front of machines, so speed remains a significant advantage; I assume you know what I mean.
For scanning, there is a print mode that allows printing as soon as the paper is scanned; any technician knows how to do this.
Also, on the HC 5500, it's possible to know the exact volume thanks to monitoring via the computer network and by account (the ability to create more than 199 accounts) depending on the volumes of black and white or color printed by the user of the account.
The counter reading consists of only 6 lines:
- Document printed in Black and White larger than A4
- Document printed in Black and White smaller than A4
- total documents printed in Black and White
- Document printed in color larger than A4
- Document printed in color smaller than A4
- total documents printed in color
Nothing very complicated... right?
The inks used by the HC 5500 are oil-based and therefore resistant to UV due to their treatment and also to water (since they are oil... ;) )

MOREOVER, AND THIS IS A POINT MORE THAN IMPORTANT, THE HC 5500 IS THE ONLY ECOLOGICAL TOOL ON THE MARKET DUE TO ITS OPERATION AND MATERIALS. FOR ESTABLISHMENTS USING HQE STANDARDS OR EVEN BEING REFERENCED AS GREEN ESTABLISHMENTS, I INVITE YOU TO INFORM YOURSELF BEFORE FORMING AN OPINION ABOUT USERS WHO ARE RELUCTANT TO NEW TECHNOLOGIES.

IN MY OPINION, GREG WORKS AT RISO BUT NEVER MIND!!!!!!!

He is talking to us about the HC5500 from Riso, which is not the HC5000 that indeed has 28 lines of counter readings and which in quality is well below, and as a point of reference, a rent of over €2500 per quarter and a cost per page of €0.075 for color and €0.0091 for black and white. You can certainly find cheaper options on a laser multifunction printer.

I have a question.

Where I work, we have a RISO HC 5500 printer with HC3R-5000 (which, by the way, is a server running on GNU/Linux).

Specifically, I am on GNU/Linux (Ubuntu 8.04) and I would like to print on this machine.

However, I can't seem to do it. There is no CUPS driver for this printer and the driver provided by RISO is for Windows.

Do you have a solution?

I managed to get the Riso HC5000 working with an IS700C on Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, and 9.04. It works much better than the solution provided by a certain Rémi in September 2008. I can print with Ubuntu using the Riso just like with any other printer. I’m using a CUPS driver, so everything is well integrated. If anyone is interested, I will write the instructions...

To answer everyone, the copy quality of the Riso is not great, but these machines are used for making flyers.
However, it remains a very expensive machine for a mediocre result, especially avoid buying it from Riso, go through a dealer for a much better price.
I know what I'm talking about; I am a dealer with the appropriate service.
But we avoid selling it to not have problems with our clients.

Hello, I have an HC 5500 and if you find the print quality to be dull, it's simply because you're not using the right paper.
There is a coated paper that provides a print output with a resolution identical to photo-quality paper but with a matte finish.
These inks are more environmentally friendly than other types of inks, resistant to UV, water, and offer a quality and cost that are not at all comparable even to a laser or water-based inkjet print, precisely because of the amount of ink used and the printing speed, not to mention the warping of the paper after printing.
The best approach is to compare the printed papers from water-based inkjet, laser, and the HC 5500 inkjet to see for yourself; I have managed to win over new clients thanks to this and improve my margins.
I used to have Xerox, Canon... and honestly, if you prefer their sales methods, then go ahead!

Hello,  As a Riso distributor myself, I would give a rather mediocre opinion on the HC 5500; the colors are not great at all. However, if you want to produce a large number of flyers, the cost per copy is indeed negligible. On the other hand, Riso's direct sales force sells it very, very expensively when they are not ripping off the customer. If you want quality, do not buy this product, which is not good regardless of the paper used.  Best regards

The HC 5500 is a good, fairly reliable machine, but it does not reach the quality of copiers.
That said, it allows you to make color copies at a low cost.

It has just been replaced by the COMCOLOR range.

Much more user-friendly to use with added useful functions.

Wow, all the nonsense I'm seeing on the HC is horrible.I saw earlier "HC5000 with an IS700C connection," that's not compatible.It's IS700C with HC5500.The HC5000 and HC5500 are very different (speed, quality, and handling thick paper).This machine is absolutely not made for high quality but for high-speed printing at a very low cost.A new model has been released, the ComColor (in several versions), which is a more compact and faster product for copy and scanning.I'm on Linux, and I haven't found a way to print on an HC with a GDI connection (HC3R-5000) so far.With Postscript connections (PS7R5000, PS7R9000, and IS700C), you just need to use the PPD.

Hello,  As a high school user, I would say that the Riso is acceptable but has major flaws. To be specific: - Big compatibility issue with the Pronote software. It's impossible to print the reports for a whole class at once (you have to do it student by student). - Same goes for managing internships with Pronote. In short, their mail merge feature has serious issues. No compatibility for our model on Mac. Weird management of the color counter; if a page in a printed folder from a computer has color, everything is counted as color. When the technician comes, it's strange, but the default setting is in color mode.  PS: obviously we pay an extra fee for color.  In short, acceptable product, fast but with issues that are deal-breakers for us.

Hello, If you use Pronote, keep moving.  We are experiencing major printing issues with the Riso. Indeed, it is impossible to launch the reports for a class and the internship agreements all at once. In short, the mail merge feature in Pronote crashes the print pool. You'll have to restart your computer.  We have over 500 students in our high school, and at each class council or internship departure, when we edit parents' passwords, etc., each time we need to do a mail merge, we have to use a laser printer (which is more expensive).  In short, the equipment is very good for the photocopier, but unusable with Pronote.  It's up to you to decide.

Hi, I'm using a risograph and the color is not great, very dull except on coated paper for digital inkjet, but it requires 72 hours drying in an oven and is only possible in small quantities because you need to print one by one, otherwise it will smudge. The ink is very expensive; I buy it in Belgium for €316 excluding tax per cartridge. If you've found it cheaper, I'm interested... See you soon.
