Hello everyone,
I plan to install Ubuntu on the computer (Windows Vista) of an elderly person who only uses the internet and text, no software or anything else.
From time to time, they buy things online; can they do this under Ubuntu without risk? Are their banking details safe when using Ubuntu?
This question may seem silly, but I've heard that "Linux = no antivirus."
I use Ubuntu on another computer and I'm happy with it. But I don't know anything about security.
Still, I'm asking to reassure myself!
Thank you :)

Hi,
surely more secure than under Windows: no malware to spy on your activities on the PC or the net and your keystrokes.
There are antivirus programs, I know ClamAV, but viruses are extremely rare under Linux, and to my knowledge, only target servers or for industrial or strategic espionage. -
Hello,
No online purchase is safe!
If the site is questionable, there's a risk of having your credit card information stolen! And this applies whether you're using Windows or Ubuntu!
The only really effective solution is the e-Bank card. A virtual card that you can subscribe to. LA POSTE or some banks offer this service.
You have an expense. You activate the e-Card, enter the amount, the application generates a credit card number and its cryptogram that will be VALID only ONCE and just for THE INDICATED AMOUNT.
That's it.
See you later!

Thank you for all your answers!
And especially for the e-Banking Card? I didn't know much about this system.
It seems very practical. I think I'll adopt it in the future.
I'm going to look into ClamAV, I've heard of it before (or rather seen it on other forums via Google).
Thanks again, and happy new year!
