Hello. I bought a Canon EOS450D 4 years ago (with a 5-year warranty extension). The flash on this camera is stuck (no longer opens). At FNAC, the salesperson told me that it would be better to buy a new one than to have it repaired (minimum €150). When I told him that this camera was only 4 years old, he didn't flinch, he wasn't surprised. At customer service, we found out that this device was actually still under warranty (extension) and it was therefore sent for repair. It should be noted that I was led to believe that 4 years of operation is already pretty good..... I bought it for 700 euros after all! I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to buy a compact or a "disposable" one!!!!

The seller suggests buying a new one. Well, surprise, John!
There are a lot of stories about digital cameras.
I've owned a digital Pentax DSLR for 8 years, I shoot a lot, and -yes- my internal flash does get stuck closed from time to time. I’m careful, that's all.
Yours is under warranty, it will be repaired and you’ll be able to enjoy it for many more years!
At 700 euros (body + lens) you won’t find many Canons today, I’m afraid...

By the way, there’s a discussion about the Canon EOS here:

Amateur photography is a hobby and not an investment. So like all hobbies, the price varies depending on the individual. 4 years for a DSLR in this range is not bad, especially if you shoot a lot.

If you're wondering whether you should buy a compact camera, then you should indeed buy one because it means you don't necessarily see the advantage of a DSLR.
