Prevent automatic SMS to MMS conversion Android

Hello everyone,

I am new to Android (Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini), and I was wondering how I could prevent the automatic conversion of my long SMS into MMS, without using a third-party app (like Handcent). I noticed the issue simply by seeing my MMS budget increase while I never send them; they are therefore charged to me excessively while I have unlimited SMS... talk about a mistake.

Thanks in advance!

Hello soundboy9,
You should know that on Android, special characters like emojis take up significantly more space than a simple letter, for example. So, a special heart will take up almost the space of 90 letters "a". Therefore, you can reduce your character count and thus the size of your SMS.
There is also a solution that few people know about (it seems to me, because after research, I only managed to find this tip twice). Once in your "Messages" app, press the left touch on your phone to open a dropdown menu. There, you press on the line "settings". Then you need to look for "Input mode" and set it to GSM Alphabet, then set "Creation mode" to Limited.
And there you go, normally the conversion is canceled, you can now write longer SMS without having to switch to MMS format or split your SMS.
Best regards, Warsondu78.

I've read this "tip" several times but for me it makes no difference: as soon as I insert just one smiley into my message, it automatically gets converted to MMS, even if the message is just a smiley!
