Transition to Mavericks -> GUID partition issue

Hello,
I'm posting here because despite my searches on Google, I haven't found anything that could help me with my problem.
On paper it seems simple: I have a MacBook Pro purchased in mid-August last year running Mountain Lion.
I downloaded OS X Mavericks from the App Store to upgrade my machine. However, when I launch the application I just downloaded and get to the point where I'm asked to choose the installation hard drive (in this case my "normal" hard drive), I get a bubble saying: "this disk does not use the GUID partition table scheme. Change the partition scheme using Disk Utility. Select the disk, choose the partition tab, select the volume configuration, then click on Options."
However, the procedure does not apply to my current hard drive since it appears necessary (apparently) to format the disk. Yet, this is the disk where my current OS is installed.
In short, I'm stuck, how can I either:
change the format of my hard drive to use the GUID partition.
create a bootable USB drive to completely reinstall the machine (I made a Time Machine backup to recover my data post-installation)
Thank you in advance for your response, hoping I've been as clear as possible
Best regards,
Tom
Configuration: Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) / Firefox 24.0

Hello,
You can try to create a bootable USB drive or DVD for Mac OS X Mountain Lion using DiskMakerX.
If you succeed, all you have to do is boot from this new media and reformat your internal drive as it should have always been.
