Hello, I just installed Tomb Raider and when I launch it, it opens the launcher normally, but when I click on play, it gives me an error message "unable to initialize Direct3D with this configuration" and closes the launcher. I reopen Tomb Raider, go to options, and then the launcher crashes, so there's no way to change the settings.
I have made a few small modifications like updating my drivers and changing compatibility settings, but nothing works. Do you have a solution?
I have an Alienware X51
i7
Windows 8
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 GDDR5 with 1.5 GB
1 TB Serial ATA hard drive

Good evening
I had the same problem,
and while searching the web, I eventually found how to tinker with the registry to make it work:
in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Crystal Dynamics\Tomb Raider,
create a Graphics key,
in this key, add 2 DWORD (32 bits):
AspectRatio to initialize to 16000 for 16:10
RenderAPI to initialize to 11 for DirectX 11
That worked for me, it allowed me to modify the graphics options (in which you need to uncheck Exclusive Fullscreen) and launch the game!

I get an error message 'Failed to initialize Direct3D with current settings' / the games crashes during start-up.
Please check you do not have 'Exclusive Fullscreen' set within the launcher options menu. This setting may cause issues on some PCs.

For my part, same bug except that I have access to the options; I just had to uncheck the 'Exclusive Fullscreen' box and the problem was solved.

I have exactly the same issue as you. But no solution for now, and yet it's not for lack of trying. If anyone can help us, that would be great!!! ;)
Ah, I just figured out how to solve the problem. You go to "Options" and simply uncheck the "exclusive fullscreen" box. Let me know if it works for you too. Enjoy ;)
Hello everyone, I had the same problem as you: error message and crash when clicking on "options." After long hours of searching and trying, I found that my issue was completely resolved when I realized that my graphics card drivers were not up to date. I then updated them, and since then I haven't had any bugs or crashes, and I was able to launch the game without any problems!
Hello everyone, I'm also struggling with the issue regarding Tomb Raider Underworld, the infamous: "failed to initialize Direct3D with current settings." I've updated all the drivers for my graphics card and DirectX, but they were already all up to date, and even switching to an older version... it still doesn't work. But what surprises me the most is that when I install it on a less powerful PC, it works perfectly! For you to compare: - the first computer: Processor: Intel Core i7-740QM 1.73GHz (with turbo boost 2.93GHz) Graphics card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 with 4.00GB of RAM Operating system: Windows Seven 64 bits - For the second: Processor: Intel Core i5-520M Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M Operating system: Windows Seven 64 bits
Hello, I have unchecked the exclusive fullscreen option and yet the crash is still present. If anyone has a solution, could they help me?
Computer:
-Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
-Intel Core I5
-4 MB of RAM
-DirectX 11
-ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics 1 GB

Hello, I also unchecked the Exclusive Full Screen box and it still says "Unable to initialize Direct3D with the current configuration." I set the quality to the lowest, it doesn't work, I tried updating Direct X 11, it's already up to date. I don't know what else to try; I've even changed the resolution but it doesn't work.
My Computer:
- Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit
- Direct X 11
- Intel Celeron
- Intel (R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family
There you go, sorry I don't know what else to add, thanks in advance.

Can you explain how to create an aspiration and renderApi? I'm quite a noob with the register :)
Thanks in advance!
I'm completing Gegette's message
1. The 't' is missing in AspecRatio => AspectRatio
2. Add ExclusiveFullscreen (DWORD (32 bits)) with a value of 0
!! Be sure to choose the decimal option and not hex to encode the value
to create the key, you need to launch the registry editor.
you can use the key combination "Windows + R" and a small window will open. In the input field, type "regedit" and click OK.
you'll then arrive in the registry editor. Handle it obviously with caution.
Now to add keys, I'll let you find help on manipulating the registry.
See you later
