HELP!!! - Maxtor Onetouch II stuck

Solved

Hello,
For about two years, I've had a Maxtor/OneTouch II (250GB) connected to my PC via FireWire, which I've been using without any problems to back up photos, documents, etc. Unfortunately, for the past few days, I can no longer access it. I think I may have made a mistake by turning it off while Windows XP was shutting down!!!
For your information: No changes have been made to my configuration for at least 2 months.
Here's what I observe:
- The noise from the disk is normal,
- The blue light keeps flashing constantly,
- It is no longer visible from "My Computer" (usually drive N),
- It is not visible in Disk Management ("My Computer/Manage..."), and
- In "My Computer/Manage/Device Manager" -> "Maxtor Personal Storage Front Panel" -> "Maxtor 1394 Storage Front Panel" is visible with a yellow circle and an exclamation mark, and in Properties: This device cannot start. (Code 10).
Before asking for your help, I visited several forums, including yours, for similar issues, and the proposed solutions or ideas are so varied that I'm getting lost... And above all, people often talk about disassembling the disk and connecting it via IDE/cable or even formatting it (if we manage to access it...), which I would like to avoid!
The reliability of this external drive, so far, has led me into the trap of not backing up the approximately 210GB of photos, music, films, and documents elsewhere - which is why I am very worried and am turning to your expertise.
Thank you in advance for taking some time for me.
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.2 Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 MedionPc MS-7012 512Mb DDR-SDRAM

Hello there, I think it's your lucky day!!!
I had the same problem with my Maxtor two weeks ago…
Like you, I searched the forums for solutions and to my surprise, several of us have this failure.
For my part, the computer was left on and the next day Windows notified me that it had lost a connection… I no longer had access to the drive!
How I solved the problem:
My issue was that my Maxtor had lost its partition so Windows could not access it.
I installed Search and Recover 4.
https://www.iolo.com/?utm_source=redirect&utm_medium=404
This software allowed me to recover the information from my partition (lost or deleted).
After this operation, you are presented with a virtual drive (which you can name as you wish, x, z) where you can access your data. If you reboot your computer, you have to repeat the same operation since your partition has not yet been repaired…
As a precaution, I transferred all the contents of the disk to another 300 GB portable drive at this stage.
Then I was able to permanently recover my partition using Partition Magic 8.0.
https://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche10520-partition-magic.html
After recovering my lost partition with this software, I was able to access my Maxtor normally and it works like before!
I don't know exactly what happened, but with this procedure, I succeeded!
Good luck,
Chemkid

Wow Daniel, really nice of you to give me the info.
I was starting to despair, as no one was responding to me. I had also tried the Micro-Hebdo forum and Seagate (Maxtor) without success until now.
Away for a few days (work), I won't be able to try your solution until the weekend. I won't fail to give you some feedback.
Once again, thank you for responding to my call for help and for sharing your knowledge.

Hi Daniel, I have installed search&recover4 but since my disk is not visible, I couldn't access it with the software. I can see all the other partitions and drives but not the Maxtor. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Seagate support I'm in contact with will help me, but I think it might be a lost cause. If not, I'll have to resort to opening the case and trying to connect the drive directly to the internal drive cable. If you have any other ideas, they would be welcome as I would like to recover my photos and documents.
Thanks again for responding to my call for help.

Have you searched for the lost or deleted partitions!
It is supposed to conduct the search, and when it finds it, that's when you are dealing with the disk and your (virtual) data, while you repair it with Magic Partition 8...

Good luck!

P.S. as soon as it finds the partition, you can stop the search; otherwise, it will take longer for nothing...

If you are able to find the lost partition, you should use the "Mount" function, I believe, to recover the indexing and be able to access the data on your Maxtor. You need to select the drive that you want it to assign, e.g. x, z
Then you have access to your data...

Hello everyone,
I have installed a Maxtor II - One Touch - external - 300GB to store my photos because it's my passion and I really have a lot of them. Recently, there was a power outage and since then, it's completely frozen. The blue light doesn't even blink anymore. Long live Maxtor... I installed search and recover but it's not recovering anything at all. Thank you in advance for your ideas.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Philippe

Hello to all those who own a Maxtor external hard drive that is stuck and invisible from Windows.

As I explained in my previous message, if the partition/disk is no longer visible to Windows, it is generally
impossible for an average user to repair it and thus recover the data, since no program can perform a
recovery if the disk is not visible.
So here are the following solutions:
- If under warranty, send it back to the factory for repair or replacement, but all data will be lost.
- If under warranty, send it for data recovery (very expensive...) and return it to the factory for repair or replacement.
- Whether under warranty or not, and if you want to try to recover the data yourself, then you must:
--- carefully open the case (this is where the warranty is void!).
--- extract the disk.
--- connect it as a secondary disk to the PC's ribbon.
At this point, either it is still invisible, in which case it is generally lost forever, or it is visible. In this case, either the data is directly accessible, or you need to use a recovery program to retrieve it.
In my case, the data was directly visible and I was able to copy it onto another disk.
Currently, I am saving the more sensitive data on DVDs for added security (!!!) and the Maxtor disk is at rest.
As soon as everything is saved, I will install it permanently as the second disk in the PC and format it. This is possible because it is a normal IDE disk and it will give me an additional 250GB on my PC.
I can't claim that this is the miracle solution or the only one for recovering this data, but it worked well for me.

How did you connect it as a secondary drive?

Hello, I also have a problem with a Maxtor drive. It is under warranty and I would like to contact them by phone before sending my drive by post... (it's not that I don't trust them, but still!) The problem is that I can't find a valid phone number; the ones they give on their site (Seagate, since they were acquired) do not work! Thank you for sharing it if you have it. Otherwise, I was able to recover my data by using Ubuntu (which is a Linux OS) that allowed me to see that my drive still existed, and then I used software from Ultimate Boot CD. I can provide you with more information if you’d like.
Thank you for your response.

Hi Marie,

I'm sharing the links in French I could find regarding Maxtor support in French:

http://www.seagate.com/www/fr-fr/about/contact_us

http://seagate-fr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/seagate_fr.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_faqid=2881&p_sid=5HNhwVui

In the first warranty support section, there are phone numbers including 00 800 4732 4289 which I used as well as 00 800 5631 1670.

Good luck and best regards.

Hello, thank you for your reply, but the phone numbers 00 800 4732 4289 and 00 800 5631 1670 aren't working for me; it says there's a problem with the area code that doesn't exist. It really is a lot of numbers!! I even tried removing some, but it still doesn't work. Did you reach anyone on the phone? Can I send them my DD with complete confidence?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Reseassis,

I'm happy for you that this method worked. Does this mean that your "enclosure" is scrap! (the external housing for your IDE disk)

I had considered this solution, but for my part, it didn’t yield any results. My device manager detected a disk, but it was unformatted… No way to access a valid partition.

Since it worked with Search and Recovery, I concluded that my partition was done for and that I was able to recover it with the latter…

After this step, my Maxtor works like before… So, my enclosure was in good working order.

Thank you for the follow-up.

I'll probably do that the next time it fails
(putting it internally)
since this is my third warranty return in 14 months
that I've had it. Well done, Maxtor.
But this time
I'm waiting for it from Singapore??? It's taking longer.
For your information, I was lucky to have the data backed up.

Thanks, everyone.

Can someone tell me if I can connect
an HD and a DVD-Writer on the same IDE cable?
That would be useful for the next failure!!!!!!

Hi Remy,
Sorry for the delay in my response. You can connect both on the same cable as long as you set one as master and the other as slave using the small pins at the back of the disk or drive.
That's what I'm going to do in the next few days.
Best regards

Hello Marie, I think they are reliable and that Seagate (the new owner of Maxtor) honors the warranty of their products. Try to contact them (warranty support) at the number 00.31.20.316.7222. You need to choose option 3 for French, then select from the options provided and you’ll have someone on the line to assist you. To make things easier, first note down your serial number as they will ask you for it to verify the warranty. For your information, I bought a 500GB Western Digital as a replacement for the Maxtor for 200 Swiss francs (about 130 euros) with a 2-year warranty. There you go, I hope everything goes well with your warranty and soon you’ll have a brand new, nice disk. But don’t forget to do some backups regularly... it can really be useful. Best regards.

A final message to say that Maxtor's (Seagate) customer service is super responsive. I couldn't reach them by phone, so I sent them my burned disk. Two days later, I received a brand new one!!
That's it, thank you.

Hello everyone,
In my case, the problem is almost the same
I’m on a Sony laptop running XP with Firefox. Suddenly, the Maxtor One Touch 2 has disappeared from my configuration and is not recognized by the system; it contains all my documents. The blue light is flashing quickly when I turn on the PC, but there’s no sound when starting up or shutting down the USB-connected drive
I can't find a way to fix it; it’s no longer under warranty

Hi Pierre,
I think you have the same problem I had, and the only advice I can give you is to read my previous messages. As for whether it's good or not to open the case to retrieve the disk, that's very personal because if it doesn't work... I don't want to discourage you, but either you find a service that recovers data for cheap, or you find someone who knows a bit about hardware to help you take apart the case.
I wish you good luck and lots of it.

Hello everyone, I had a Maxtor One Touch II on my PC and I had to change my computer.

Since then, I have a new PC that apparently recognizes the drive (I can see its contents), but when I launch Retrospect Express HD it shows me:

And it stays stuck like that and nothing new happens!

What should I do to avoid losing the data?

Thank you for your replies!

Hello,
I also have a problem with my Maxtor OneTouch II 300G.
It was working perfectly until three days ago when I turned on my PC (Acer laptop Windows XP) and it showed "semaphore timeout period has expired" during startup.
This slows down my PC tremendously, the drive appears during startup but is not accessible. When I unplug the USB (carelessly) and reconnect it, it is recognized as new hardware but nothing happens, and it no longer appears in My Computer.
Looking in the disk management, it appears fine and reports no anomalies?
What can I do since I am not currently in France and do not have another PC to test it on? I really don’t want to lose my 280G of files :-(

Hello everyone, I think I've had a problem somewhat similar with my Maxtor, but I really don't know much about computers. However, I need to recover the data that's on it. Does anyone happen to know a company that does data extraction for not too much money? (I know that 'not too much' is subjective, but I think you get my point).

Good evening,
I have a MAXTOR ONE TOUCH III-500GB USB2/FW/FW400 16MB.
This evening, Windows displayed a strange message, something like "write impossible", in the taskbar, and then the drive disappeared.
No way to make it appear anywhere: neither under Windows, nor with their SEATOOLS DOS V2.07PG software, nor on another PC.
The power supply seems to be fine, but the drive emits a faint, very faint "BEEP..BEEP...BEEP...BEEP...BEEP..." regularly and very high-pitched.
I filled out my maintenance return form (RMA) because it is under warranty, but I also filled out the RECOVERY form to get an estimated quote and see if they can recover as much data as possible. Since they are in PARIS, I will give them a call to find out how they proceed and if the warranty is still valid if they don't recover anything at all.

If you are interested in this information, I will post it here as soon as possible (price, time frame, results, best solutions, etc.).

Not great these ONETOUCH drives: not even 1 year of operation!!!!!!!

Hello,

I have a Maxtor One Touch II 200GB that I have been using for years on XP, but I had to change PCs, and of course, now I'm on Vista...

And of course, Vista doesn't want to recognize my Maxtor. I found a workaround on an English forum saying to remove the password so that Vista recognizes the drive. Unfortunately, I didn't have a computer with XP at hand, and now that I do, I can't find that cursed Maxtor CD...

I tried to find drivers on the Maxtor website, but none are available for XP.

If any kind soul among you has the famous CD and can send it to me (via MSN or another way), please contact me.

Hello,

Like you, I had the same problem this weekend. I had to reinstall Windows and I left the Maxtor connected.
I suppose, from what I've read, that it's one of the causes of this problem.
I tried many things described in this section but without success.
I didn't take the disk apart to install it internally...

My disk is a Maxtor One Touch III with 750 Gb.

Neither Partition Magic nor the other software mentioned above could help me, but I found the software: Power Data Recovery (www.powerdatarecovery.com) that sees the contents of the disk and allows file restoration.

Of course, my disk was almost full and I'm going to spend a lot of time recovering everything, but I'm so happy to have a solution.... :-)

I hope this can help others who are in the same situation.
In any case, Maxtor => never again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 700GB. I installed PartitionMagic 8 under Vista to format my drive in FAT32 so that it can be read on my PS3. But the problem is that PartitionMagic is already, first, crap, and second, I no longer have any partition on my OneTouch, so my PC doesn't detect it. Please help me to create a partition on my external hard drive; I want to have it in NTFS and I don’t want to use PartitionMagic or SwissKnife anymore. Is there a solution, please help me?

Hi, I only have one piece of advice: get yourself something else like a hard drive because this is total crap: reliability 0!!
I have a 500 GB one: it regularly crashes and becomes unrecognized and/or inaccessible... even after reformatting it... mine has decided to be smashed, and I don't want to hear about Maxtor from Seagate anymore!
