Hello,
My Maxtor Basics Desktop external hard drive isn't working anymore. When I plug it in, it doesn't spin at all and the LED remains off. I suspect a power issue, so I would like to open the case to try connecting the drive to the power supply of another external hard drive. The problem is that the Maxtor Basics Desktop only has one screw (under the reference sticker), and I don't think it does much. I have no idea how to open the case.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Cyril

I finally found it (I sweated to open it lol) you need to:
1-remove the label and take out the screw
2-there is a plastic bar on the side with "MAXTOR" written on it, it needs to be unclipped (you have to force it)
3-Let the brawn come in! You have to spread it... it's a thing that probably wasn't meant to be opened ^^
4-You find yourself facing the casing itself, 3 screws to remove the cover, 4 holding the hard drive. Now I'm off searching for a new casing... but the connectors on this hard drive look nothing like what I've seen so far... well, we'll see.

I also have a Maxtor Basics desktop and in the blink of an eye, the PC no longer detects it!!!!!
Under Vista and under XP!
If you have any information because I just bought it and I have all my wife's Word files and all the photos from the past 5 years plus the movies and MP3s
Not good, but I cleaned my PC so that I could copy everything to DVD
Did not have time
Thanks in advance
PS: For me, the little light is on but nothing happens

A good piece of advice, don’t forget that a hard drive is still a mechanical storage medium whose reliability and lifespan are unpredictable. If you don’t want to burn your important data onto DVDs (which are more reliable), make sure your data is present on both your internal hard drives and your external HD. This way, in case one or the other HD fails, you will always have one HD with your data. The probability that your internal drives and your external HD fail at the same time is relatively low (the principle of redundancy, notably applied to the braking systems of cars or equipment in airplanes).
As for me, I just purchased a Maxtor Basic 1TB external HD. I hope I won’t have the same power supply problem... In any case, if that were to happen, I would really like to see Maxtor send me packing regarding the casing! It doesn’t state on the packaging that the warranty only applies to the hard drive, it seems to me...

Hello everyone,
Thank you for your valuable disassembly advice.
Let's summarize:
- Unclip the "Maxtor" bar on the side (1 clip broken out of 20, that’s fine...) using a knife or a thin flat screwdriver.
- Remove the rear screw
- Open it in half from the back. WARNING, it does not open completely (I broke a plastic rod in the center near the diode to proceed to the next step!) Also be careful with the power cable for the diode.
- Remove the 3 screws from the internal cover (2 on top, 1 at the back near the rear.)
- Unstick the plastic spacers from the sides, then slide the cover towards the back.
- Remove the 4 screws holding the hard drive to the case.
- Unclip the hard drive from its power and data connectors towards the front.
... Now just check the hard drive's condition ... In another forum!
Two more things:
In light of the obvious impossibility of removing the hard drive from the case, choose to buy the two components separately and assemble them yourself from the start. This experience reminds me of the issues with modern cars that one cannot repair oneself, even just to change a mirror!
Finally, NEVER forget to back up your important data (personal photos, work, game backups, etc...) on other media.
Consider yourself warned...

Right from the start, Maxtor is crap! This brand should be condemned!
I tried the enclosure, nope.
I tried connecting it to SATA, no result, the PC doesn't even start... Apparently, a power supply issue... I tested it on 3 different PCs, including mine, Windows 7, with a built-in 1TB hard drive, same problem!!!
Please, a solution, at least to recover the data!!!

Hello everyone
I also have a Maxtor Basic hard drive and like yours, mine no longer powers on
So I'm going to try connecting it internally since I have spare ports available on my motherboard
I also tried asking Seagate for information on disassembly so here is the response I received from them
"Dear KJé,
First, we do not repair drives, we only replace drives. And to answer your questions:
1. If you open the enclosure, it will void the warranty and you'll have to buy another one.
2. Each external drive has a different drive inside, so we do not know which one (IDE or SATA) is inside. Again, if you open the enclosure, it will void the warranty.
3. There is no component we can provide you. We do not sell or distribute any parts or components of our drives. We only replace them.
If you want to recover data from the drive, you need to contact a data recovery service. You are not required to use our recovery service, but if you use another service, they need to be certified for recoveries, otherwise it will void the warranty.
If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us."
I wonder how they recover the data if they do not repair or open the HDD so thank you dd-10291 for the disassembly information (from my point of view as an industrial designer, this is not an acceptable response)
PS the mistakes are in the message from Seagate and I replied to them in English and it was the EMEA Supervisor who responded

Hello, I have exactly the same problem as you. I think I'm going to go to customer service. I spoke on the phone with Seagate's data recovery service and I just wanted to point out that this recovery comes at a pretty high cost; the guy talked to me about 700 to 1700 euros, which is huge!!!! If you have other suggestions to avoid this, because apparently sending my external hard drive to customer service will automatically erase all my data, I'm so disgusted. Thank you in advance.
Same problem with probably the same disc. I was watching a movie and it stopped and has never worked again (on Vista as well). Likewise, I suspect a power supply issue... but impossible to open the case!
Also found a seemingly useless screw...

In my case, the problem was indeed with the enclosure. Once I extracted my hard drive from the MAXTOR enclosure, I ordered another enclosure from ldlc.com (this time with a fan).
If your drive is no longer connected, the first thing to do is to disassemble the external hard drive to connect it directly to a computer. (which is difficult given the SATA connection).
Unfortunately, in your case, the little light on the enclosure turns on. So it is unlikely that the issue is with the enclosure. Since your external hard drive is new, you should try to activate the warranty.

We need to try to make the warranty work, which is typically 3 years.
For your information, what is the capacity of the hard drive?
And for those who have opened it, what is the reference of the hard drive?
This way, we can see if there is something we can do.

My first idea was to "take advantage of the warranty." So I went to the MAXTOR website, entered the serial number... started the return process with Seagate (as the Maxtor site redirected me to Seagate).
I then learned that the 3-year warranty does not cover accessories of the external hard drive (the enclosure being considered an accessory, I had no choice but to replace it). I paid €20 (excluding shipping) on the LDLC website for a beautiful enclosure with a built-in fan.
The hard drive had a capacity of 750GB and I was sure it was the enclosure's fault. Thank you for your help.

Hello,
is there a way to prevent the external hard drive from going into sleep mode?
Can a software like Maxtor One Touch manage the power?

Hello, my problem concerns the Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 hard drive.
I can't open the casing. Under the label, there are no screws, no tabs to force, NOTHING.
Please, everything is inside...
Thank you.

Gentlemen,
I am in the same situation as you. I have a business, and believing I was doing the right thing, I purchased a MAXTOR external USB hard drive.
I copied all my business data onto this drive, including accounting records, the entirety of our website, all the photos of our products, our stocks, etc.
In the meantime, I formatted my computer to install a new operating system, and when I wanted to reintegrate all my data, whoops! Nothing, the hard drive runs indefinitely without ever appearing on my workstation.
I called the lovely data recovery service from Maxtor, and there, quite naturally, I was told that the warranty only applies to a standard exchange and that the simple data recovery service costs 1500 €!
I find this to be quite an easy response, asking for 1500 € when they are responsible for the quality of the product they manufacture and market. They should also bear the consequences of low-quality products.
As far as I am concerned, this is months of work that have gone to waste, and I assume there are many people in my situation.
I therefore propose that you all write to me at my personal email, and we will jointly file a complaint against MAXTOR, and if they do not meet our demands, then together we will file a lawsuit at the small claims court in each of our towns.
Here is my email: spacypulp@hotmail.com
I look forward to your messages,
Best regards,
Cédric

Hello,
On my side, as I mentioned in my first message, I bought a case for my hard drive (which cost me about €20). Now I have no more issues.
Maybe you should (since you're already in trouble) try either connecting your hardware directly (internally) to the computer, or buying a new case.
In any case, I wish you good luck; all of this seems like a big scam to me.

Thanks for the disassembly! I managed to do it without any damage (so if I find that damn receipt, I can put it back together and take it to the warranty service (:p))
My hard drive had a little accident... my dog went under the table and grabbed the wires, and the hard drive followed... so I can no longer get it to work... when I plug it into the power, it seems to work, but when I connect it to my PC, it doesn't work anymore... I hope it's not too serious ^^ I need to check that out
Now all that's left is to install it in my desktop PC (or figure out what's wrong...)

Hello,
It's impressive how many people have an issue with this enclosure...
When you connect your drive internally. I know there are software programs to test hard drives. You just have to find one (preferably free ^^) to test that drive. Unfortunately, if the drop was too severe, the drive may be damaged. But it's worth a try, you never know.
The software I had to test the drives was from Seagate. I don’t remember the name, sorry.

Well, I have a problem... I don't have a screwdriver that fits well :D I mean, I have one but the handle turns and not the screw ^^
I'll need to go buy one but, well... if worse comes to worst, I'll have to find a way to get the screw out one way or another... and if you have a link for a program like you mentioned, that would help me out too (:p)

FURTHERMORE, it is advisable to purchase your hard drives in pairs of the same model number (this way, when one controller fails, you can empty the disk and wipe it with the controller from the other one). This is what 99 times out of 100 is done by the data recovery company that charges you 20 TIMES the price of the disk!!
Hello everyone!
I’m joining the ranks of those unhappy with the Maxtor Basics hard drives...
Let me explain my story:
My PC currently has a dual boot, XP Pro and Vista Ultimate 32-bit...
Under XP, the hard drive works fine, but if I’m unfortunate enough to leave it plugged in during a reboot under Vista, then nothing... The hard drive is recognized as a "local disk" but there’s no data, and on top of that it only detects 16.3 GB of capacity... This means I’ve lost my data four times...
To try to resolve the compatibility issue under Vista, I decided to open the case and connect the drive to my other external enclosure... Well, the Maxtor drive is a Seagate SATA while my other enclosure is IDE... So I decided to connect it directly to my PC that has a spare SATA port... After a little adjustment of the jumpers, it works!
The drive is perfectly visible under Vista and with its full capacity (500 GB)!
I tested it for several days like this with reboots under XP and then under Vista, etc... The drive works wonderfully, and I decided to do the ultimate test... I loaded a 100 MB folder and then put the drive back in its enclosure...
And then, problem again! Nothing!
So I’m going to buy another enclosure to put my hard drive in! This is getting too heavy!

Hi everyone, I also have a 1500 GB Maxtor, it's 6 months old and this bastard just died on me without warning. No blinking light and when I plug it in, it lights up for 2 seconds but very weakly and the disk doesn't spin. I'll try to buy an enclosure and see what happens.
Hello,
same here. My Maxtor Basics 1 TB is making that infamous repetitive clicking sound as if it can't start, whether it's connected to the computer or not. The worst part is that nothing special happened. The day before yesterday it was working, yesterday I didn't use it (January 1st...) and today, nothing at all. Of course, it was 80% full, but well, those aren't my most important data.

Hello everyone!
Panic on board! My Maxtor external hard drive fell, it seems to be working, but it's making a noise as if it can't start up....
The green light stays on, but my computer doesn't recognize it....
I took a software to scan the drive, but it doesn't offer to scan it because it's not recognized by the computer....
I removed the hard drive from the case to connect it directly via a SATA adapter, but again my PC doesn't recognize it....
I really need to recover the data, what should I do??? I noticed that several of us are experiencing the same issue, so if someone can come to my rescue, I thank you in advance!

hum... I just followed the entire topic and I managed to connect my external hard drive to the SATA port of the computer.
and I'm stuck there. how do I enable the SATA port in the BIOS? (I am a complete beginner!)
considering that for the moment I succeeded in entering the BIOS, then into standard CMOS Features and there I only see IDE Channels [...] which are all set to auto and should I connect the hard drive before or after starting?
thank you!

I also have a problem with my Maxtor Basics 1TB external hard drive, which I bought yesterday. The sector is dead and I wanted to open it to recover my data that is on the drive (all my photos...).
I saw that dd-10291 shared his method for opening it. I managed to open the front panel, so I can now see my drive. But the next phase seems tricky (to pry it out) and I wanted to know: those who have done this maneuver, what condition did the casing come out in?
Thank you for your replies,
Yoyoton
I'm surprised to see the large number of people who are having issues with these hard drives ^^
I also have a problem and I suspect it's the power supply.
I will try to disassemble it as mentioned above.
Thank you
