Hello,
I bought a Seagate 250GB SATA hard drive with a Vantec NexStar3 external enclosure.
The drive works perfectly (I use it every day). It is recognized without any problem via USB. However, when I connect it via e-SATA (I/O cable plugged into a SATA port on my ABIT KN8 Ultra motherboard and the external cable connected to this interface), it is not recognized.
I should note that there have been instances where the drive appeared, but in a completely random manner. It has also happened that the e-SATA connection prevents Windows from booting.
Are there any tweaks to make in the BIOS? Is the external cable or the I/O cable faulty?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello everyone
I'm contributing my share to the building!
First of all, my setup
Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard
Core2Duo 6600 processor with 2GB of RAM
3 internal Sata2 hard drives
1 external Sata2 hard drive
Windows XP SP2
I installed a 250GB Maxtor Sata2 hard drive in an AC Ryan eSata/USB2 enclosure, which had been working until now in a USB2 enclosure, and I encountered the same issues.
The drive was only recognized if I powered it on before the CPU, and if I turned it off without shutting down the PC or if I put the PC into sleep mode, the drive was no longer recognized in Explorer.
After checking the motherboard manual, I reinstalled the driver for the JMicron JMB36X RAID controller even though I wasn't using my hard drives in a RAID configuration, and I can now access my hard drive even if I didn’t turn it on before the CPU, and I can recover it if I put the PC to sleep.
I also adjusted the IDE configuration in the BIOS:
Primary
IDE configuration
SATA configuration: Enhanced
Configure SATA As: AHCI (enables the storage driver to activate advanced Serial ATA functions)
It seems (a simple personal analysis) that the eSata port on the motherboard was originally intended for RAID operation, and that installing the JMicron driver and adjusting the BIOS without configuring the disk in RAID is enough to fix the issue.
Hoping I was helpful
Cheers everyone

Thank you cat54, I will test it when I get home on my desktop, I indeed have an Asus K8N so I will try the BIOS update.
Device Manager / search for changes in hardware and then, like magic, it appears in the workstation... Have a nice day everyone.
Honestly, I don't understand much, I have an Asus A7V880 that's at least 3 years old.
Here's what’s happening:
When I connect it externally with the SATA cable and turn it on before booting the PC, I don’t see any SATA drives recognized, neither the internal one nor the external one.
If I start the external enclosure while my PC is already running, my PC becomes unresponsive, no mouse or keyboard.
What works:
Connecting the external drive via USB.
Connecting the internal drive.
That's it, if anyone has had the same issue and resolved it, I'd be grateful. (Win XP pro SP2) I haven't attempted to flash the BIOS as it doesn't sound good to me.

I come to contribute my stone to the building.
Having just purchased an Icy Box USB and Esata enclosure, I also had some questions regarding the external Esata port of my P5K.
With USB, there's of course no problem, but why not try with Esata since it's supposed to be faster.
All of this with the Jmicron controller activated in IDE mode.
As soon as it was said, it was done ............... and ........ disk not recognized!!!!
After rebooting, the disk was recognized ......... happy as can be, I wanted to test the hot plug feature.
Big disappointment because after turning it off and back on (enclosure with a switch), the system no longer saw the external disk!!!!!
I then decided to install the latest driver from Jmicron (ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw) and not the one from the ASUS CD, and since then the hot plug works wonderfully. Enclosure off at boot, recognized right away after several On / Off sequences of the enclosure. Same with plugging/unplugging the Esata cable.
I even tried with the controller in IDE and AHCI ..... identical operation.
To top it all off, I enlisted the services of HotSwap! to ensure that I could safely 'remove' the external disk.
Conclusion ........... it works perfectly.

I have the same problem... Except that my Vantex Nexstar3 had a pre-installed 500GB hard drive (Samsung).
There’s no problem via USB.
Through eSATA (using the provided SATA->eSATA bracket with the Vantec), it’s not only unrecognized, the LED doesn’t light up (no signal between the PC and the HDD?) and it also crashes my entire system after a few seconds, forcing me to reboot abruptly.
Is the eSATA port on the case faulty? Is the eSATA-SATA bracket defective? Is there something that needs to be enabled in the BIOS (but I don’t think so; my main HDD is SATA and doesn’t have issues. Also, if I remove the Samsung HDD from the Vantec and connect it directly via SATA to my motherboard)?
If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.

I connected an external hard drive (My Book Premium ES Edition 320 Go) via eSATA, with the right cable, this drive works normally with a USB connection, but it is not recognized in the BIOS (Asus P5W DH Deluxe board).
The indicator light is on.
Can you help me please, thank you!

You all seem to have a slightly different problem. Before getting to the "reworking" of the cables, have you tried turning on your HDD before the PC?
It seems that eSATA is indeed not hot-pluggable, according to the information I've gathered from forums.
I have a Samsung HDD in an Antec MX-1 enclosure. It works very well via eSATA if I turn it on before the PC. However, if I turn it on after Windows has started, it is simply not recognized and does not appear in the device manager.
I don't think this is related to the eSATA bracket; it apparently is just an adapter (without electronics) to connect the two types of ports together.
Have a nice day.

It is indeed possible that the problems are different. In my case, hot-swapping the hard drive does not pose a problem, and I detected the issue by slightly moving the cable behind the hard drive. However, after putting the PC into hibernation, I sometimes have to reboot the PC to be able to find my hard drive.
Well... moving the cable doesn't change anything and turning on the HDD before the PC doesn't work either...
I will continue my research and thanks for all these ideas!

Hello everyone.
I found your topic on the eSATA external hard drive not being recognized after experiencing the same issue myself, and from what I've read, it seems that this phenomenon can have various origins. However, I wanted to share my case to broaden the possible solutions.
My motherboard is an ASUS P5B-E, I'm using XP SP2, and like Bigjefffish, my external enclosure is an Antec MX-1. I also installed a 500GB drive, mine is a Western Digital. For me too, the external drive is recognized properly in eSATA if I turn it on before the PC (actually, before booting, I think), but today I turned it on after about a quarter of an hour of using the PC and nothing appeared! Nothing shows up in My Computer apart from what is usually there. I then tried something that worked for me: I hot unplugged (since that's, according to manufacturers, one of the advantages of eSATA!) the eSATA cable that was connected to the port of the same name at the back of the PC (for me, directly integrated into the motherboard) and replugged it in the same spot five or ten seconds later. And there, like magic, instantly, the external hard drive from the enclosure was recognized and appeared in My Computer!
So, it’s certainly not as convenient as it being recognized just by powering on the external enclosure, but I still think it's better than having to close everything we were doing and reboot Windows. Finally, I don’t know if what worked for me will work for others with different PC or external drive configurations, but I still wanted to contribute my little piece to the puzzle!

I have problems with my 500GB WD external hard drive, it is not recognized by Vista via eSATA. What should I do???
I got the answer to the problem, motherboards are not yet able to support Esata, the only way is to go through a PCI card.
I need you to explain to me how my E SATA hard drive works since I have no issues with a 500GB "My Book" and a P6N SLI Platinum.
Hello, in the same type of issues: my external drive with an e-sata enclosure is not recognized when I hot plug it (Vista), but if I leave it connected and restart, it will be recognized. Is this normal? Is there anything to do so that I don’t have to restart every time I want to connect my external hard drive, which is supposed to be designed for that, to plug it in or not?
Hello everyone,
In my case, the external eSATA disk issue was caused by an outdated BIOS version. ASUS A8N SLI Premium motherboard, 18 months old. As in many cases, the disk works via USB2 but not via SATA. The BIOS update resolved the issue. I believe this is common with ASUS motherboards.
Good luck to everyone!

thank you very much, it's perfect, we had to "look for the changes made to the hardware"
for those who want more details:
click on "properties" on "Computer" in the Start menu!
Then click on "Advanced system settings"
next tab "hardware"
then "device manager"
then right-click on your computer: usually at the top of the list "PC-de-TOTO"
and there you do the famous search :)
(Tested by Valentin, vt-net.org on Windows Vista Pro SP1, HP EliteBook portable PC, external hard drive mounted via eSata and usb2.0)
best regards
Instead of rebooting, it works perfectly...!
Thank you
See you soon for a new adventure...

In the control panel, I went to add hardware, a window opens asking if I have an installation disk for my device, I click next and in my taskbar I have an icon "3 new devices detected." Then when I go to my computer, I see my external hard drive.
Thank you
