What does the "clear CMOS" command do and when should it be used?

Thank you in advance.

Hello sanuck, blux, hello everyone,

Under this name, to my knowledge, "Clear CMOS" is a function that corresponds to an inscription on the motherboard which allows, as this label indicates, to reset the CMOS memory to the factory-configured settings by the manufacturer.
CMOS memory is a small memory ;-) that contains the parameters useful for the BIOS to boot the computer (basically, the information found in the "BIOS" = a misleading term for "BIOS Setup" which means BIOS configuration).
This function is used with a thousand precautions on the electrical side when there are startup issues with the machine in the BIOS settings and one is completely lost due to all the modifications made!
Activating "Clear CMOS" is done by moving an electrical power-off (cable removed) "jumper" to the appropriate position and restarting the machine for a few minutes, then putting the jumper back in place.
I won't elaborate here on the precautions to take!
With modern computers (current BIOS) that can recognize almost all basic components (those discussed in the setup), this reset function (with the necessary precautions) is easy and effective as nothing needs to be manually reconfigured... except for exceptional exotic components... which was not the case in the medieval times of computing where one sometimes had to struggle to describe the hard drive and others!

There is a similar function in the setup under the label "Resetting parameters" or something equivalent...
There is a similar function which involves removing the battery that powers the motherboard (not the battery of a laptop! the battery!) which means it retains these setup parameters: there is a memory reset, the difference being that it is necessary here to leave the battery removed for much longer than a few minutes... but hours depending on the motherboards, or even a good night!

HTH - That's it! I didn't know I knew all this! ;-)
