Hello,
When I turned on my Packard Bell PC, I noticed that it shows Acer instead of Packard Bell. Can someone explain how this change occurred?
It is 3 years old and running Vista.
Indeed, yesterday I noticed that the icons and settings had changed, and I reset everything back to normal.
Even my screen no longer displays HDMI at startup like it used to.
Thank you for helping me solve this mystery.
Best regards

Some details:
Is your PC back from the service center? Has it 'undergone' a system reinstall? Who knows, it might not even be yours! (Well, the hardware is yours, but not the 'software' system)
Explanations:
Understand that ACER and Packard Bell are PC assemblers. Of all the components that make up the PC (power supply, motherboard, memory sticks, hard drive, monitor, keyboard, and mouse...), Packard Bell only designed the case, the chassis, the tower. Just this large piece of metal and plastic/metal panels with the brand symbol engraved/bent on it.
I myself, like many others, have assembled my own PC. If you ask me for the brand, I won't give you less than 6! Intel for the processor, eVGA for the motherboard, ASUS for the graphics card, Cooler Master for the power supply, GSkill for the memory, Seagate for the hard drives, Corsair for the tower... Logitech for the keyboard)
Solution:
Reinstall your system with the CD that was provided to you with the equipment.

Because the manuals don't tell everything... But not nothing either, right! -
Hello Erwan, and thank you for your attention.
My computer hasn't returned from the repair service; I've had it for 3 years, and it's not a laptop.
However, on Friday, I noticed that a small unknown icon appeared at the bottom like a tower with a minus sign on it that was moving and then disappeared after a long time. When I clicked on it, it said that new software was being installed, which was not the case.
All my files and software are there, except for one for photo editing, which I had to reactivate with an installation key provided when purchased, as if I just bought it.
I don't really want to format it if it's not necessary.
Could this be a remote update by Packard Bell?
Or someone else?
It's strange to see Acer when I turn on the computer...
Thanks in advance for your help.-
"At the bottom, a small unknown icon appeared like a tower with a minus sign on it, and it was moving."
?! Can you be more specific? Both about where the icon appeared and the corresponding software.
"All my files and software are there, except for one photo editing software, which I had to reactivate with an installation key provided when I bought it, as if I had just purchased it."
That's strange.
"Could it be a remote update from Packard Bell?"
Do you think a Packard Bell update could 'transform' the PC into an ACER?!
"Or someone else?"
Something like that, yes... I suspect a corruption of your system by a virus.
Honestly, has your PC been used by anyone other than you before the problem appeared?
What is your antivirus?

Erwan, here are the answers to your questions
The icon was on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen
It appeared suddenly and it surprised me when I clicked on it; it said a software was being installed even though I wasn't installing anything. I couldn't remove or close it.
My daughter was on Facebook shortly before, as she is every day.
After this icon, I noticed that the settings had changed, as well as the screen resolution. I had to reset everything back to how it was before, icon size, display size. But everything is still there, including the photo software site mentioned earlier.
My antivirus is Avira Free and Microsoft Security Essential
I confirm I had Packard Bell when starting up (my daughter confirmed this to me) as the name of my PC tower and now it says Acer when starting up.
In general system information: manufacturer = Packard Bell
I also thought someone might have logged into my computer; is it possible to check it that way?
Thanks for your help... -
I have a Packard Bell for which I took the latest updates recently
and didn't see any Acer on the horizon. -
-
Yes, you can try it, but I'm not sure it will end.
-
In trying to restore to last week, I went to accessories, system information, and there it says Acer as the manufacturer, whereas in general system information it clearly states Packard Bell.
I don't understand anything at all, why Acer is there and why it changed by itself??..........
Thanks to anyone who can help me understand, and especially if I need to reformat the PC; I'll try restoring to an earlier date first, and I'll keep you posted. -
Here is additional information that might help you
I restored to an earlier date last week and now it brings back the icon at the bottom on the taskbar (it's actually a tower or PC, I'm not sure of the exact term with a green ball that goes up and down)
it's been more than 2 hours - "INSTALLING DEVICE DRIVER SOFTWARE"
(everything is lagging during this time)
clicking on it opens a window and here are some lines:

and others..........
and this morning still Acer with
a window that opens on the taskbar and indicates: USB ADSL Loader
and Avira: 2 new files installed
Never in 3 years has it done this to me.
Thank you for helping me understand all this, what should I do? Should I be worried? -
In my opinion, it's a big virus that must be causing this!
Backup your main documents and format
that's what I would do
it's already happened to an internet user here -
Thank you, Christian, that's what I'm going to do then... damn
How could I be infected despite my antivirus?
Also, how do you explain that I have "Packard Bell" in "general system" and "Acer" in "system tools", could the virus have changed that?
There's something that comes back to me from an email I received last week from an acquaintance, who actually didn't send it to me; I clicked on it
http://whaouh.com/newnews.facebook.com.foxnews3.php
It was a page in English, could that be where it came from?
Since I'm not always next to it when I turn it on, as it's a bit slow at the beginning, it could date back several days.
Thanks again to you and Erwan for your help.-
"How could I be infected despite my antivirus?"
The antivirus is not infallible... and does not prevent a program from running that has been initiated (even inadvertently) by the user.
By the way, do you know what differentiates a virus from a 'normal' computer program from the system's point of view? Answer: nothing. They are both executable computer programs.
However, from the user's perspective... the one that allows you to manipulate photos, watch a video... that's good! The one that sends your information to others without your knowledge, or modifies your system, deletes your personal files, or allows others to use your PC's resources for fraudulent activities, THAT is a virus!
It's the behavior of a program that allows an antivirus to distinguish a malicious program from a normal one.
"How do you explain that I have 'Packard Bell' in 'general system' and 'Acer' in 'system tools'?"
A big blunder by a technician coding updates for both brands... just a hypothesis.
"There's something that comes back to me from an email I received last week from an acquaintance, who actually hadn't sent it to me"
Well, well...
"I clicked on it"

With the page you give, it's Google that appears.
I think it's a virus because apart from that I don't see what could transform your PC! It's not the updates since there's no Acer anywhere on mine.
Keep us posted after your formatting. -
Sure, I'll meet you in a few days after the formatting. A friend of mine is going to do it for me, and he also says it needs to be reformatted, so I'm going to entrust my precious to him!!
Thanks again!-
IMPORTANT: Proceed with him to back up your personal data before formatting: formatting will erase EVERYTHING on the targeted partition.
Once your data is backed up (that means 'copied') to another medium, proceed with the formatting and the clean reinstallation of the system, then install and update the antivirus.
Once the latter is active - and only then - connect the medium on which you backed up your personal data and perform a thorough scan first: it is possible that the backup contains the virus (if it is indeed a virus).

In the future, create an image of your computer with Acronis or Norton
when it's running smoothly
when you have a big problem, revert to the image, it prevents having to reinstall everything!
