How to set up a PC as a slave?

Hello,

For several months, I've had a desktop XP that won't start anymore. When I turned it on, it would start and turn off by itself, sometimes without even having time to enter my password to access my session.
I tried reinstalling it, without success: it didn't turn off but got stuck at a certain percentage.
Now, when I try to turn it on, it starts the reinstallation process by itself, asking me to insert the recovery CD that it no longer recognizes!
Since I have a laptop (Windows Seven), I was advised to set my desktop as a slave and my laptop as a master to recover my data before taking it to the dump...

First of all, do you think I can recover this PC?
Second question: how do I set it as a slave? How do I connect the two PCs? With a male/male USB cable?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Internet Explorer 9.0

    Hello,
You don't set a PC as a slave, but the Hard Drive. You need to remove it from the PC to connect it to another as a slave, which is not possible on a laptop, or you can use an external drive.
If your XP won't start, your cable is of no use.
To recover your data, you can try this: https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/24285-recuperer-ses-donnees-personnelles-avec-toutou-linux

I just tried, everything is working fine for now.
I am following the tutorial, and I am at the step: "Backing up personal documents" and it says:
*On Windows XP, the My Documents folder is usually located in sda1/Documents and Settings/"Your username"
*On Windows Vista and Windows 7, the folder is located in sda1/USERS/"Your username"
But I have nothing in the sda1 folder. I have an sda2 folder with folders and more, but I can't find my personal data?

If you tried to reinstall it, it might have erased everything.
How many partitions did you have on this PC?
In SDA2, do you have a Windows folder?

      I had 2 partitions C and D
Not a Windows folder but a System Recovery folder (written in red) that I didn't dare to open.

All my data was on C, nothing on D. If I understand correctly, everything is erased then?
Is it still possible to reinstall it?

You can open whatever you want, it's not going to risk much.
Since you had two partitions, Windows was probably installed on the first one (SDA1).
If it's empty, it's a good sign that your reinstallation attempt wiped everything out.
