Valid connection but no internet access

Question

Hi,

I have a little internet access issue that suddenly occurred last night; since then I have "limited access" to my connection.
It comes from my laptop (I’m on my desktop right now, so the connection works), and I can't figure out what the problem is.

I tried connecting the laptop with an Ethernet cable and nothing changes (so the issue isn’t due to the Wi-Fi, I suppose), and I also tried accessing a neighbor's free Wi-Fi that I usually connect to, and that still doesn't work.

Is there a trick to perform?

I tried what you told me but it didn't yield any better results. I did it yesterday, and then a bit frustrated for having wasted the whole day without any changes, I gave up.

This morning, I did a system restore a few days back, around a "critical update" of Windows, and I don't know if that's what did it, but when the computer rebooted, my internet access was restored!

I hope it won't happen again! =)

Hi Pierre-Louis,  I can't guarantee that this will work, but it doesn't hurt to try...  Go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections and disable then enable your wifi card.

Hello,

I have the same problem since this morning; in any case, after reading Pierre Louis's explanations, I think it's pretty much the same.

Basically, last night I was connected and everything was working fine, but since this morning, every time I try to connect, my PC connects but I can't access any web pages. There's always this little yellow triangle with an exclamation mark that appears and says "no internet access," even though it says "connected." When I dig a bit deeper, it seems that my PC is indeed connected to my router, but the router is not connected to the internet. Which is impossible since I'm writing to you live from my mother's laptop. Moreover, I'm having the same issue even with unprotected neighboring connections. The PC is brand new, not even a month old, and this is the first time I've experienced this issue.

I hope you can help me along with Pierre Louis. If you need any more details or even screenshots, etc., to better understand where the problem is coming from, please let me know.

If you haven't done it yet, I highly recommend doing what I advised Pierre-Louis here (https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-25874785-connexion-valide-mais-pas-d-acces-internet#6).
Also, if you could, like him, copy the output of your ipconfig/all, it might help me :)
Go to

Start>Run>type "cmd" then hit enter>ipconfig/all

@ Pierre-Louis:
To set your DNS, go back to:

Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections

then, on your network card (let's start with the wifi) right-click>properties
A window will appear. Select, by clicking ONCE, Internet Protocol Version 4, then, on the right, click on properties.
Another window will appear. You will see that towards the bottom you can set a DNS. Put the same address as your router (192.168.0.1 if my memory serves me right.) then reboot your PC and your router just to make sure the change is taken into account.
A little ipconfig /renew wouldn't hurt after the restart ;)

So here's what happened. I followed your advice, tried several times but to my great despair lol nothing was getting better.
After reading Pierre Louis' last message, I thought I would try a system restore as well, and the same, it fixed the problem, access to the internet is finally restored. So there you go, I'm happy even though I would have liked to know the origin of this issue in case it happens again, which I hope it won’t!

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to help us!

Hmm, could I suggest you to ping your DNS server? I just fixed the issue on my PC by changing the DNS server.

I dare to ask how? The ping under cmd is fine, but is the DNS server the gateway of the box?

Your DNS server is set in your box somewhere. It's going to be a simple IP address but the way to find it will vary depending on the firmware of the box (meaning that depending on the interface, you won't find it in the same place).

Once you have the address (there are actually two addresses, a primary DNS and a secondary one), ping both of them with your favorite cmd :)

Exactly the same problem as Pierre-Louis and Pixie, since around August 15th, no way to access the internet even though the computer was connected. I restored the system starting from August 14th, and everything is back to normal. A big, BIG thank you to Pierre-Louis and Supertoncar for their advice!!

Hello,

I also had the same problem as you, and I found the solution.
The issue is that your Wi-Fi card is not scanning for channels.
To fix it, simply change your Wi-Fi channel (between 1-13 or between 1-11) and set it to the same channel as your router or Wi-Fi modem.
