Hello everyone and Happy New Year!
Could someone tell me how to connect 2 Windows XP PCs with an Ethernet cable and play in network with a friend when he comes to my place? (my two PCs would only be connected to each other and not to the internet)
A big thank you in advance to those who will reply
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

Hi there, indeed it is possible to connect the two PCs via an Ethernet cable (RJ45) but it must be a crossover cable! (e.g., Freebox Ethernet cable)
If you don't have a crossover cable, you'll either have to buy one (I know, stupid answer...!) or use two straight cables connected to each other through a hub that will actually do the crossover for you that you would have had directly with your crossover cable (hence the name "crossover," it's amazing!!!)... um hum... anyway
Generally, it works by itself and you don't have to do anything else; otherwise, if that is not the case, then my condolences...!
No, I'm kidding (I have to, it's my first post on the forum), so I was saying if it doesn't work, then check "connections," then double-click on the local area connection related to the local network you've just created by linking your two PCs, then select the "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" tab from the dropdown list, click on "Properties," specify an IP address, like 192.168.0.1 (be careful, not X.X.X.0 or X.X.X.255!!!!, these addresses are reserved to define respectively the address of the local network you just created and the broadcast in this network), for the subnet mask it is automatically set when you place your cursor in the corresponding field. Then, once you have done this for one PC, you do the same for the second one by changing the IP address to 192.168.0.2 for example (same reminder as before, no 0 or 255 at the end!). There you go, and you can exchange files in the favorites tab if you want, and if it doesn't work, restart your PCs so they take your network configurations into account.

Térence, at your service!!!!

P.S.: After that, to know how to really play together at the same time, I don't know yet; it was just the step of connecting the two PCs... :D

Hi "Farmer," happy new year to you too! Your problem is common, and I'm ready to respond to it as best as I can. It's just a matter of equipment; you need (for 2 PCs) 2 "straight" ethernet cables and a hub/switch, all of which costs less than €16. After that, to set up a LAN, once you have this equipment, it's advisable to assign an IP to each of the PCs for total stability of the installation.
Need more info? No problem, feel free to ask more questions!

Thank you, thanks to you I understood how to assign the IP and for my Ethernet cable it needs to be crossed since it's the one provided with the Livebox I'm using...
But I'm struggling to set up my connection correctly: I go to network connection, create a new connection, configure an advanced connection, then on my laptop the type of connection "direct connection to another computer" is grayed out; I only have the option: "accept incoming connections," so I can deduce that my laptop does not recognize my desktop!?
Meanwhile, on my desktop, I can continue and choose the host or guest option. By the way, is it useful to create both a host connection and a guest connection on the same computer or not?
Thanks in advance.

You need to create a new favorite workgroup/network or set up a home network or ...
And when it asks you for the network name (Mshome by default), you put in something else like the classic workgroup ...
Do this on both.

Thank you very much for kindly helping me :)
Indeed, I have more questions lol
How do we assign the IP?
And is it possible to connect using just one Ethernet cable by directly linking the two computers?
Thanks in advance.

Nah, but I'm just telling you that the live box cable is not crossed but straight! lol too bad, normally you don't need to create a new connection, you configure your IPs, you connect your 2 PCs (with a crossed RJ45 or 2 straight RJ45 + hub/switch), you configure the firewall (Windows & co) (personally I disable it, it's useless and it crashes everything), and normally when you go to Network Favorites/View Workgroup Computers, there you will see your PCs if you only see the one you're on, restart both PCs, wait a minute for them to exchange their stuff, if still nothing, create a home network... in Network Favorites/Create a home network or small business network

There you go, (sorry for all the typos but I'm writing it quickly! lol)

see you later farmer

I bought a crossover RJ45 cable, I connect my 2 computers, I configure the IP, I disable the Windows firewall, I go to network favorites then view the computers in the workgroup, and after a few seconds the computer displays this message:
"Mshome is not accessible. You may not have the necessary permissions to use this network resource. Contact the server administrator to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of servers in this workgroup is not currently available."
PS I tried restarting both computers.
What should I do to make my network accessible?
Thank you in advance.

Hello!

I have a small problem to solve. I have the game Freelancer and I would like to use the same CD for both
computers; I shared the CD-ROM drive on my second computer and from that shared CD-ROM I installed it without any problem, but now when I start the game, it looks for the CD-ROM on the second computer.
What can I do to make it recognize the first CD-ROM as if it belonged to the second computer? There must be some trick or patch to make the second computer think that this CD-ROM is its own and not just a simple folder share or hard disk appearance?

Hello everyone, I connected my two computers via a crossover RJ cable... I configured everything, but the network card LEDs are not lighting up, which means nothing is working. What should I do?
