No sound on MacBook Pro

Hello,

For the past few days, I've been facing a rather annoying problem: the sound doesn't work on my MacBook Pro! No sound is coming out, either from the built-in speakers or from headphones. The sound icon, which is usually black and allows me to adjust the volume, is greyed out, and I can't adjust the volume.

While searching through different forums, I've read that many people have had roughly the same problem, which they resolved simply by plugging and unplugging a headphone into the jack, but that didn't work for me. Then, I saw that I needed to unstick a contact at the bottom of the jack with a toothpick or some other long stick to reach it. After fiddling around with it in every direction, nothing worked. Moreover, people having this contact issue all mention a red light that turns on in the jack, which is not the case for me.

After that, to verify, I booted into Windows 7 and there, there was no sound problem. The issue returned after going back to Mac OS.

In short, all this to say that the problem must be software-related since it is specific to Mac OS. So it has nothing to do with that widespread contact issue at the bottom of the jack (at least in my opinion).

Finally, I noticed one last rather strange thing. When I play a video or music on VLC, the sound suddenly works, but only for VLC! The sound icon remains greyed out and the sound is still impossible to adjust, except with the volume control within VLC. I tried with iTunes and QuickTime, but it doesn't work. Only with VLC, then.

Oh, one more little detail, in System Preferences>Sound, Output tab, it states that my internal speakers are of the type "Headphone port." Rather illogical, right?

So, if anyone has any ideas/solutions, thank you in advance! :)

Configuration: MacBook Pro 15" early 2011, Mac OS 10.7.3 Lion

Hello!
I'm posting this message just in case, as I encountered the same issue on my MacBook Pro and solved it differently.

Symptoms:
- sudden absence of sound from applications
- the startup chime was still playing
- no red light at the bottom of the jack

I fiddled with my jack for hours using all sorts of tools (toothpick, paperclip, knitting needle, poor thing, it was almost abusive ...) with no results. I updated the operating system, cleaned the audio cache, etc.

The solution was actually quite simple. Desperate, I went to: Apple>System Preferences>Sound>Output
There, you need to click (to highlight) the line "Headphones/Headset Port" if you have your headphones/headset plugged in. If you don't have your headphones/headset plugged in, you need to click (to highlight) the line "Built-in Internal Speakers."

In fact, it may simply be that the computer has set the default sound output to a software that provides audio output.

In my case, I use the software Livestream Procaster (which allows you to draw or play live and broadcast it on a site called Livestream), and this software can handle the sound during your stream. My computer had set this software as the default sound output, so I just had to revert to the correct default sound output.

So there you go, I hope I could help some of you.

Thank you.....I don't understand why the sound suddenly stopped, do you think it's possible to have a virus on MacBook OS X?

I'm not very knowledgeable about Macs, but the possibility of a virus is negligible. ^^
