Question

Hello,

I'm losing it!! All of a sudden, Windows has granted me all my user rights... actually, it's simple, I can no longer do anything except turn off or restart the computer!!
I can't open the slightest text file or any application; systematically, for everything I want to open, it says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item." (I'm writing to you from another PC)
Please help me, I'm completely losing it!!!

Was your disk formatted in NTFS or FAT32?
Because in FAT32, there are no access rights.

Then, it might be a virus... Windows doesn’t decide on its own to remove your rights.

Do you know the administrator account? If so, use that account to create a profile for yourself; if not, you're in trouble.

If you're using the default administrator account, you're in trouble.

There are ways to bypass the policies, but it’s too long to explain on a forum. Need more details.

Same for me, except the internet is still working, otherwise I can't run any program (no permissions) or even install anything (still no permissions)

It also showed me a Windows script error, the system.vbs or something like that, sorry for the imprecision, I don't have the message in front of me anymore

I use Firefox as my web browser, I tried with Internet Explorer and it gives me the same message as with the other programs: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I researched this file "system.vbs" and it turns out to be a virus, is that true? If so, how can I remedy this??

I'm back after a while, first of all, I want to warn you, if anyone comes across this topic because they just encountered this problem, I STRONGLY advise them to SCAN THEIR PC WITH AN ONLINE ANTIVIRUS as long as they have internet access, see ALL POSSIBLE ANTIVIRUSES because after some time their own antivirus will no longer work, they won't even be able to install a new one (whether free or not), and I also advise them not to turn off their computer and to back up what they can as soon as possible!

I am in a house with two PCs, the first one to get infected is mine, the problem mentioned above, namely, no internet (checked that another program is not using this connection while I've always used Windows), no more antivirus (not a valid win32 application) and absolutely no possibility of installing any other antivirus EXCEPT AVAST (which seems like a piece of crap to me) and a crappy antivirus that works in MS-DOS, which was useless to me except maybe wasting time or noticing that it was useless...

Here’s what I’ve been able to use: COMBOFIX.
So it actually got rid of a worm that I had for a while that you probably know (ms32) but it didn't help much because even after this micro-disinfection, the Beagle worm remains undetectable!

I've tried every possible and unimaginable fix for this virus, and nothing happens... For now, I'm scanning with Avast, I'll keep you updated!

Hello everyone,

same thing for me today... windows cannot... blah blah... maybe no permissions... blah blah... nothing was working... neither system restore, nor smart restore, nor control panel... I didn't even have the right to turn off the computer... nor access to the internet... anyway...

here's how I solved the problem... force shut down the computer... restart and boot into safe mode (usually F8 or F5... try pressing F8 several times)... in safe mode, it's possible to perform a system restore!!!!

go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools and then "system restore"... you can choose a restore point prior to the problem, then the computer will restart and everything should be fine... I hope for you...

In fact, I had tested this restoration solution via safe mode, but I had no restore points.

As for me, it was the Beagle virus, it seems, which deletes all restore points and blocks internet access, in short, a nightmare.. I tried all possible and imaginable fixes, and the virus didn’t go away.. impossible to install a new antivirus etc...

So the solution really surprised me: I installed Avast in safe mode (it worked) and I scanned all the hard drives (Beagle only actually attacks the partition containing Windows, I believe) and the virus was removed!

Restart.

Perfect, everything works great :)

Hello, I have the same problem except it's a little different:

I start the computer. I turn on Internet Explorer and it shows me the message you mentioned. I do the same for MSN and the message comes back. I try many programs, nothing works except when I go to "Start -> Favorites and click on one of my favorites.

I am 11 years old and I do not know what "Scanner" or "Restore" means. So please, I can't tell my dad (he would yell at me :D !!) help me and please explain to me very in detail so that I can understand.
