mouse drag-and-drop issue Solved/Closed

Question

Hello;
I have a little problem; for the past two days, I have been unable to move folders in Windows XP using my mouse. I can still copy my folder and paste it, but I can't move it, which means that after copying and pasting, I then have to delete my original folder.
It's worth mentioning that I had just allowed my 4-year-old son to watch a DVD on the computer, he probably engaged some action to block the movement of my folders using the keyboard (I also can't move the icons on my desktop). Do you have a solution to propose? It's not a big issue, but it's annoying.

Your problem is old and you have certainly solved it.
I have exactly the same problem and I just found the solution.
It is simply the "Escape" key on your keyboard that is stuck.
On a machine that doesn't have the problem, holding down the Escape key creates exactly the symptom you describe.
I found this really by chance while noticing that my Escape key was slightly stuck...

Try it, you will see the solution is there!

Hello!

Here are the steps to fix the issue:

1) Start.
2) Control Panel.
3) Display (A window opens).
4) "Desktop" tab at the top.
5) "Desktop Items" at the bottom (A second window opens).
6) "Web" tab at the top
7) Then, uncheck the box at the bottom: "Lock desktop items"

And there you go, you can drag them again!!! ;-)

Thank you darkler, I forgot to mention that I had already tried this kind of manipulation.

The box is indeed unchecked, and it still doesn't work.

I'll try to be a bit more specific:

Not only can I not move my icons, but I also can't move my files. For example, a file in a folder that I want to move to my desktop or anywhere else is impossible with the mouse (I pick up my file, I drag it, the little plus appears, but when I release my click, nothing happens). However, I can still copy and paste.

I also want to point out that I updated my Windows XP through Windows Update. So I have Service Pack 2 and all its updates. Therefore, my OLE DCOM base should be up to date.

I also want to clarify that I am the administrator of my computer, and guests have the same problem.

This seemingly trivial problem prevents me from playing certain games.

I hope I have been clearer, and I thank you in advance for your responses.

Have you checked in the Start menu options if the box is checked?
Right-click on Start >> Start menu >> Customize >> Advanced tab >> Start menu items and check the first line.

I think your problem comes from your mouse or keyboard (a key stuck down), as for me, the issue came from that! Try using another mouse or another keyboard.

Hello!

Actually, it's not a device issue, follow the steps below:

- Right-click on the desktop
- Arrange icons by
- Then look to the right of "Show desktop icons," you shouldn't see a sort of cross that's usually used in a form where you check boxes.
- So if you don’t have anything next to "Show desktop icons," and your icons are still displayed on the desktop, you just need to click on "Show desktop icons" to finally move your icons.

Explanation:

When you disable "Show desktop icons," and restart the computer, the option remains activated, but the icons are still displayed (as if they were selected), and you can no longer move them. It's simply a bug that can sometimes be very annoying.

I think the problem was related to a spring in my old mouse that no longer did its job.

It's often the most annoying problems that are the hardest to solve.

day I've had this problem for several days, I searched everywhere on the net but apart from the escape key that you need to press because it sometimes gets stuck, I found nothing that helped me. But I did find the solution for my particular issue.  I have a wireless USB mouse and keyboard (the mouse works on batteries) and I had a PS2 ball mouse that I used most often. It broke down and I replaced it with an infrared USB mouse. I simply hadn't realized that it had been malfunctioning since that day. I tried removing the batteries from the wireless one, but no, so I unplugged the other one and upon restarting, everything works again. Conclusion, Windows doesn't like having TWO USB MICE on the same motherboard! one USB and one PS2, YES! but two USB NO! It might be "therefore" due to that (heh heh heh) that it is a USB problem! try changing the port, maybe? but I suppose you've already done that. also try a new driver I think... (to replace the automatic Windows one for example, I don't know...) well then, there you go I hope this helps some of you. See you later!

Let's say I'm the savior of everyone else!

Do: Start -> Run -> type "regedit" (without quotes) and press Enter
In the registry, navigate (using the "+") to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Internet Settings/Zones/4

Check in the right window if the key 180D exists and has a value of "1"

-> If that's the case, try setting it to "0" as the value (open the key by double-clicking on it)
Confirm and restart

-> If it does not exist, create it:
In the right window: right-click -> new -> DWORD value
Name it 180D and set its value to "0"
Confirm and restart.

-> If none of this works, try uninstalling/reinstalling SP3.

I just found a new solution. I simply downloaded the mouse drivers because since Windows 98SE, it is no longer necessary to install a driver for the mouse, so we don't do it anymore. However, these drivers still exist, for example for my mouse: Logitech. So I went to download these drivers and installed them, and it works perfectly. In fact, installing the drivers for one or more mice makes them compatible with each other and eliminates any issues you might have. Good evening, I just installed XP PRO with a license on an Acer Aspire desktop. To my surprise, the cut/paste function and the manual movement of icons on the desktop are not working despite all possible attempts. (This is with a TRUST laser and infrared mouse). I was surprised when I connected a basic wired mouse to a USB port and was able to access the aforementioned functions. The problem seems to come from missing drivers for this type of wireless mouse. Despite several searches, I still haven't found the missing drivers. I'm not giving up....... Best regards.
