Minecraft: Spider Climbing the Wall

Hello,
I would like to know if I place torches on a wall, will spiders still be able to climb? The same question applies to ladders.
Otherwise, what do you suggest for a wooden house with windows and a balcony? I aim to have many floors, and I currently have two. Between each floor, I have three layers of wooden planks; I find it a bit empty. Would placing torches and ladders in the middle be effective against spiders on the roof? :s? I was also thinking about cacti, but ... putting sand with wood is not great.
There you go, I'm open to any suggestions or criticism.
P.S.: I have a trench that is 2 wide and 3 deep all around my house. If a burning skeleton falls into it and gets close to my house, will it catch fire or not? If so, what do you suggest? The trenches are not very aesthetic... Also, I have a small wooden slab bridge at the entrance of my house: an opening for burning skeletons. When I say skeleton, it's the same for zombies. I was thinking about dispensers, but ... I'm not forcing you to answer that since it's outside the scope of my post.

Another way to prevent spiders from climbing walls is to place bits of ladders towards the top of the wall (about 4 blocks high to be out of reach), as the edges of the ladders block movement.
