Keyboard shortcuts for geometric symbols in Word 2011

Hello,
I need to help children take all their class notes on the computer. They need to be effective despite their handicap.
To be effective, they need to be fast and not get lost in the manipulations! Hence my problem with geometry...
I would like to know if it is possible to create a keyboard shortcut to insert the perpendicular and parallel signs (among others).

In Word, under insert, there is symbol, you just need to select the symbol and create the shortcut key. But the use of Alt is necessary.
Unless you change the font to Wingdings and memorize the corresponding key.
Then the parallel can be done with =equal or // slash x2
perpendicular an uppercase L
