How to scan slides?

Question

I have over 5000 slides and I would like to know (to preserve them from mold) how to digitize them. I live in Guadeloupe and the mold caused by the ambient humidity deteriorates many things, and these slides have (for me) an invaluable value (slides from 1962 to 1990). Having them scanned by a photographer is far too expensive for my financial situation. Thank you in advance for your help, Jacques aka Papy Gwada.

Hello, I am currently digitizing about 5000 slides, taken from 1973 to 2001, with Minolta SRT 101 then 303... And I’m simply using a CanoScan 8600F flatbed scanner (the successor should be available today for under 200 Euros in all the good stores) which comes with accessories for scanning slides (4 at a time) and negatives, effortlessly and with excellent quality... For example, attached is the scan of a photo taken in January 1973 in Sully-sur-Loire, with the SRT 101 that I had just received from Santa Claus... !!! This image was voted "Best photo of the month" in February 2009 on the Vacanceo site, even though I uploaded it upside down!!! Regards, JPLC

Epson Perfection V500 PHOTO. I just scanned about 3000 slides in around 40 hours, processed with a small Nikon software that corrects old shots. IMPECCABLE. The V500 has an automatic processing option or with all possible settings, even more. GOOD LUCK, RV.

I scanned 2000 photos with an Epson Perfection 1200 scanner and it's perfect. I suggest you buy it from Price Minister, or elsewhere. This scanner is sold used for around €50, you won't be disappointed. One little detail: you'll need to download the driver from the Epson website, it's free. Best regards. Bernard

I digitized my "old" slides with the Canon PIXMA MP760; it took quite a while, but the result is excellent. It keeps me busy in retirement, especially on winter days. And what a pleasure it is to occasionally revisit all these memories. Have fun and good luck!

Any scanner that has a backlight, meaning lighting in the lid for flatbed scanners or specific scanners for slides, which are expensive but offer better image quality.

I think Jacques Derosier is a bit optimistic in announcing 1 minute; I myself have done the operation for many slides, with minimal editing (framing), naming for organization, and sorting, and you should rather count on 2 minutes per photo. The advantage of coolscan is that it also allows for processing all color and b&w negatives... It's a significant investment, but the quality is nothing compared to the results I got with a flatbed scanner...

Hello, I acquired a color printer/scanner that also scans photo films (negatives) as well as slides four at a time. It's an Epson RX640 that I bought new in May 2007 for 266.50 euros. It's a great tool for everything and it's awesome! I had 3,500 slides to scan... it took me some time but it's done! Digitized, the slides look stunning and what great memories!! PS: I'm attaching a scanned slide... one piece of advice though, clean the dust on the slide before scanning it, otherwise you can see the defects (like in this example).. and you need to retouch it with software designed for that purpose) Bruno

The advantage is that you can edit them with photo software and especially remove the dust particles that are sure to settle. Attached is a scanned photo with dust grains but color retouching.

I photographed 5600 slides on my screen and put them on my computer, on CD, and on USB drives. Here they are safely stored forever. The cost of the operation was just a bit of time but not a single euro spent. At the same time, a quick tour on PICASA to refresh them, and it's done. Have fun!

At first, I tried to scan my slides with a flatbed scanner: average quality and, above all, very time-consuming. Then I tried a dedicated scanner that my club purchased from Conrad: better results but still very slow. So I had the idea to set up my camera on a tripod right below the lens of my slide projector and photograph my slides. The result is not bad and, above all, it's very quick: my wife passes the slides (which allows us to review them) and I just press the button. First pass: all horizontal slides, second pass: vertical ones. In any case, they won't deteriorate anymore!

I've spent very long days trying to scan my slides and negatives. The conclusion is that if you want a minimum of quality, there are no 36 solutions! Either you buy decent equipment (don't be fooled into buying the first cheap scanner that claims to be able to digitize slides and negatives!!) that includes infrared ICE technology (without it, you'll be disappointed by the effect of dust and micro-scratches on the images)... Here you find Nikon with the Coolscan 9000 but that's immediately €2500!! The Coolscan 5000 is cheaper but it's hard to find (count on at least €1500 with the necessary accessories). More affordable, the Epson V750 or V700 flatbed scanner is quite decent and you're looking at around €500...but it's very slow!!! Otherwise, there are a few online labs that are relatively affordable... I personally tried a lab near my home and two internet labs. I recommend the website http://souvenirsnumeriques.com which does excellent work at a reasonable price. Kris

Another solution I used was to buy an extension tube to scan slides. Nikon offered one for the old Coolpix cameras, E-4500 in my case. This tube screws onto the front of the lens. The other end has a viewing port with two sliders, one for slides, the other for negatives. The tube is finished with a light diffuser made of frosted white glass. Unfortunately, this accessory disappeared from Nikon's catalog shortly after the discontinuation of the CoolPix E4500, the last in the 990, 995, and 4500 series, cameras that pivoted in two blocks at 90° or any angle, very practical in many cases of difficult shots (crowd, macro photography). I found it second-hand on eBay in impeccable condition for a modest sum (40 € if I remember correctly). This type of accessory must exist in other brands, provided that the lenses have a front thread, for example, on a DSLR. Note that the results are excellent with slides using daylight through a white reflector. They are average with color negatives due to the brown-red mask (loss of brightness) and the color inversion done by the editing tool.

I use a specific slide scanner, the OVT Scanner (for 35 mm films and slides - 48 bits, 3600 bits resolution - one-button-plug and play - USB2 required - photo printing software). It works with Windows XP and provides excellent results that are incomparable to those of flatbed scanners. You get a photo of the slide in excellent quality. I purchased it from L'Homme Moderne catalog for mail order on the site 'letemps.ch', which also features a small ION scanner of the same type.

I also had 5000 photos, and I managed with an Epson RX620 multifunction printer. We do them four at a time, and with a little practice, it gets faster and faster. It’s better if there are two of us. Be sure to thoroughly dust off the slides with an air brush; if there’s a fingerprint, a small microfiber cloth will do the trick. Also, watch out for fingerprints on the printer glass: to remove the slide holder provided with the printer, I used a simple sheet of paper that I slid between the holder and the glass. Of course, all this takes time, but when you love it, you don’t count...

If you're not too picky about the quality of the scan, there are flatbed scanners (for A4 paper size) that can also scan slides, with the advantage over the Nikon Coolscan (which I own) of being able to scan multiple slides in one cycle. Scanners such as the Canon are the best for this type of work. You can easily find references and prices online. As for the Nikon Coolscan, it is very powerful but its use is slow and tedious; one minute to scan, yes, but the handling and adjustment time adds significantly to the total time; it is not suitable for processing 5000 slides, unless you use the automatic feeder, but then its cost skyrockets; the flatbed scanner also has the added benefit of having a copier at home! Good luck with either of the devices, it's a long job to keep for those long winter evenings...
