These files are generally recognized by the new email client chosen. If the goal is to create lists for themed messages, family, friends, buddies, etc., it is necessary to create contact groups, which can be quite tedious depending on the email client. Indeed, performing these "export" and "import" operations is at best very tedious (I couldn't do it with Free: I had to "type everything myself," as you say...), and at worst impossible, because ISPs love to keep their lists to themselves! They aren't very sharing; after all, it's not in their interest for you to switch to another ISP... I suggest you get an email client; it's so much more practical! You will be notified as soon as an email arrives, you will manage your emails much better, you will store your emails on your computer, etc., etc.... Personally, I use IncrediMail because it's the most flexible and easy to use, and it allows you to create "lists" (professional, friends, family) to send group emails to these people, just by selecting the appropriate list. Moreover, contacts are easily importable and exportable with IncrediMail since it's not commercially linked to an ISP... so IncrediMail offers to import or export to/from other email clients... easily and even automatically! In fact, it automatically "senses" if another email client is on your computer, and suggests downloading them from such and such email client...
