why do I need to press F1 to start Solved

Hello everyone!

So I have a little problem: when I turn on my PC, I absolutely have to press F1 to access my desktop. In addition, my PC is very slow; once I press F1, it gets stuck for at least 3 minutes on the "welcome" page, then stays stuck for another 3 minutes on the desktop before I can open a file or a folder. It's really long.

So, if someone could tell me why I absolutely need to press F1 to start and why it's so slow. I've had this PC and internet for 3 years, and it has never done this before. Thank you!

When the F1 key is requested at startup, it means that you just need to set the boot type in the BIOS and disable non-existent drives (e.g., floppy disk).

What is the message that justifies pressing F1??

Are you updated in terms of viruses, malware, etc.?

Have you tried restarting in safe mode? Does it run faster or is it the same?

Did your problem occur following an event, installation of a software, etc...?

First of all, thank you for replying.
So here it is, when I turn on the PC, the first screen shows "press F1", if I don't, nothing happens.
My computer was infected a few days ago: I installed CCleaner, Spybot Search, Ewido, AVG, and Ad-Aware. I cleaned everything.
I did an online scan with Kaspersky and apparently it's clean now, but there's still this issue of pressing F1 and the slow startup.

yes, I forgot, it says "press F1 to resume"  and I wasn't able to start in safe mode.

Hmm, that's curious..

Try to start your Windows, then go to the Start menu, then Run and type msconfig

In the General tab, click on Safe Boot.. and restart to see if it lags less at startup

Also, in the Startup tab, you can see the programs that load at startup..

It restarts a bit faster in diagnostic mode but it's not quite that. However, I still managed to start in safe mode and it's fine, it boots up normally.

Hi

When you see "press F1 to resume" at startup, there is a problem with the BIOS (hardware issue?).
Have you added/removed any hardware?

If you can boot in Safe Mode, try typing this in Run

chkdsk /f

then type 0 for Yes and restart your PC.

It will check your hard drive on restart.

Try this... "Start Menu" ->"Run" type cmd  In the window type chkdsk C: /f Type Y (for Yes)  Restart and let the check disk run

28 processes is correct.  There are several causes for a slow PC.  - faulty hardware  or  - software: -- spyware, viruses -- too many programs launching at startup -- driver(s) issue  -- fragmented or overcrowded hard drive -- damaged and unstable Windows

Yes, it was working fine before and yes, I restored it, or at least I think so: actually, it's in another forum that I got help to remove everything and I did what I was told, and I believe I did something like "restore system configuration," right?

Yes that's it, System Restore. So it should work correctly! :/  Have you checked the Device Manager to see if everything is OK, especially the ATA/Atapi IDE Controller -> primary -> DMA if available?

I suppose you have ADSL and an external modem, so this "PCI controller for simplified communications" might be an internal 56K modem that you don't use!?  You should have a CD with drivers for your PC.

Uninstall any software you don't use.  In any case, uninstall AVG and Ewido, then install Avast!. After that, update it and run a scan.

Well, actually when I connect, Wanadoo gets stuck on "connecting..." and nothing happens. I press ctrl+alt+delete ---> end task, I try reconnecting several times and then it works. How do you check the driver for my modem?

I am also thinking about the integrated modem, that is, in the form of a card inserted in your central unit. Arf, it's going to be hard to help you then...   What you need to know: a modem can take three forms:   - either it's an external modem, so a box that's not in the central unit   - or in the form of a card like in this photo: http://v2.webdistrib.com/img/products/I86780.jpg   - or the modem is integrated into the motherboard, in which case there is no card   First, open your computer case to see if you have any cards; I assume you do. Then you would need to identify the card for the modem..   Apparently, the card would be PCI; it’s a kind of white slot, onto which a card clips on, just like in this photo: http://www.aezay.dk/imgs/asus-a7n8x-deluxe.jpg   You can clearly see that there are 4 PCI ports (so 4 white slots), so it’s on these slots that your card will be. If there aren’t any, then it’s an integrated modem, and you’ll simply need to disable the hardware..   To find the modem card, look behind your tower; the modem connector looks like the ones found on landline phones because, indeed, a “cable” connects the telephone socket to the modem.. Hello,   Apparently my internal modem is in the form of a card, my husband opened the tower and completely unclipped the modem card from the white bar. He took it out.*  We checked the device manager again and there are no more question marks since there are no longer "other devices" and "PCI simplified communication controller"  should I leave it like that?  thank you

The internet connection is still taking a long time to establish, but I think I'm going to uninstall the external ADSL modem and reinstall everything properly to see if that helps.

Hi jennyfer ;)  I don't know Wanadoo very well, but it looks like you're using their software to connect? Do you have the Livebox? In total unbundling?  If your ADSL modem (Livebox or otherwise) is connected to the PC via Ethernet, you should be able to connect to the Internet without launching any software, which would be much better!  :P
