Hello, I can no longer print, here is the message found in /var/log/cups/error_log:
[10/Aug/2011:14:48:47 +0200] [Job 584] The Printer cannot communicate with the computer.
Could someone please indicate where, or in which file I could find more precise information, a more complete log file for example, or a procedure to debug in order to locate the problem?
Thank you for your responses.
Configuration: Linux Mandriva / Firefox 3.6.17

Hello,
You are indeed part of the printer group, you haven't made any modifications or system updates since the last time you printed?
Have you checked that it's not unplugged (USB or Ethernet, at both ends of the cable)?
Can you test the printer on another PC or with a different OS on this PC to see if it's not broken, or test your PC with another printer?
If it's USB, can you plug in another device to the port to see if it works?
All these steps are to try to distinguish between a hardware problem and a software problem.
Good luck with your troubleshooting.

Hello old pain-in-the-ass, I don't find you too annoying at all!!!! First, thanks for your response, I'll try to answer your different questions, but know one thing, my problem is random and what could be more problematic than randomness in computing?!!!!!
Before explaining my issue, this morning I printed several pages and then at some point it stopped, it wouldn’t print anymore, I was in the middle of printing a mail merge on several sheets, and then suddenly the printer stopped!!!! So what I did was shut down the computer, restart, go to /dev/usb and set chmod 766 on hiddev1 and lp0, see below:
[root@localhost usb]# pwd
/dev/usb
[root@localhost usb]# ls -l
total 0
crwxrw-rw- 1 root root 180, 1 2011-08-11 10:58 hiddev1
crw-rw---- 1 root root 180, 2 2011-08-11 11:09 hiddev2
crwxrw-rw-+ 1 root lp 180, 0 2011-08-11 10:58 lp0
[root@localhost usb]#
I noticed that when the printer was working, if I did a restart of the computer, hiddev1 and lp0 in /dev/usb were not set to rw for other users. So I did a chmod 766 on hiddev1 and lp0 and then the printer works but unfortunately not always, it’s random that’s why I wanted to see if it was possible to trace what’s happening because in the file /var/log/cups/error_log I have messages like: the printer does not communicate with the computer!!!!!!!! but why the printer can’t communicate with the computer I don’t know where I can find that out.
So you see, since my problem is random, it answers several of your questions since sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.
When you ask me if I am part of the printer group, at home it should be the lp group? I am not part of the lp group but since all users have rw access to lp, do I still need to join the lp group?
To finish and answer your last question, I think it is indeed a software problem, moreover my printer works under Windows and under Mandriva randomly, but apart from this Lexmark X2670 printer problem under Mandriva, I still prefer to stay on Linux and never return to Windows.
Thanks for your response, I hope you understand all my ramblings and if you can give me a clue, thanks again for your help.
I am modifying this message to add this, about 40 minutes ago, I sent a file to print, it didn’t come out, I canceled the print job that was 38 minutes old exactly, I restarted the print and it worked, surprising right?!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn’t touch anything, so it really is sometimes I see you sometimes I don’t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s why a precise trace of what’s happening could help me if I could compare a trace when it works and one when it doesn’t, but I don’t know how to do that kind of trace.

Hi,
Indeed, it’s less obvious than it seemed from the first message.
And I don’t have my computer at hand to do tests.
You can join the lp group, even if it doesn’t solve the problem, it won’t create any others.
Have you always had this problem, or did it appear well after the installation of the printer?
Are you directly connected or are you using a print server?
CUPS generally offers several drivers (including a recommended one) for a printer, have you tested another one?
Does the problem occur for all types of documents or just for large volumes (spooler issue)?
I don't use Mandriva, did you use the configuration center of the distribution or the CUPS localhost interface?
Just for the record, I had a problem once with a USB1 cable on a USB2 hard drive; small files went through, but the large ones failed. However, I doubt that's the case, it would also crash with Winwin.
No other questions for now; I hope other contributors will have some (and good ones).
See you later.

OK, hello again and thank you for your reply. Well, I’ll try to answer your questions:
1) Have you always had this problem or did it appear long after installing the printer?
I have always had this problem; when I bought this Lexmark X2670 printer, I asked the seller to check if it worked under Mandriva, and he answered yes, but I think it's rather no. Indeed, if you go to the site http://www.openprinting.org/printers, you select Lexmark model X2670, it responds with this:
Black & White inkjet printer, this is a Paperweight, with here 1 penguin crossed out and that is, according to what I have read, a very bad sign. So you might ask me why persist if this printer is not recognized by Mandriva; here's a part of the answer.
The thing is, after buying this printer, I managed to get it working, and since I am stubborn, I wanted to persist, thinking that if it had worked once, why wouldn't it work all the time? And that’s when I realized what I mentioned above, which is that every time I restart the computer, in /dev/usb, I have hiddev1 and lp0 for which the rights for other users are not set. So by doing chmod 766 on hiddev1 and lp0, the printer started working, and I thought it was all good. Unfortunately, it's not always good. An example that will answer your next question:
2) Does the problem occur for all types of documents or only for large volumes (spooler issue)?
No, the document I am currently trying to print is a .odt, so text on a single page, which is very light, and at the moment it’s not working, but I think that after a restart it might work!!!
3) Are you directly connected or are you going through a print server?
CUPS generally offers several drivers (including a recommended one) for a printer; have you tested another one?
Well, I admit that I have a problem answering that because I installed the following driver: lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.rpm.sh and after that I can see my printer in CUPS. If I delete my printer from the Mandriva control center, it is also deleted from CUPS and vice versa. So I think I go through CUPS, but maybe you know a command that would allow me to be sure, and maybe if I uninstall this driver, I could see what happens because right now it’s a bit confusing; what do you think?
Well, I hope it’s somewhat clear. I would really like to get this printer to work normally under Mandriva even if it’s not planned; there are times it works and other times it doesn’t!!!!
Thank you again for your help.

Good evening Zatox,
It really smells like a driver problem, ouch.
Personally, I install and manage my printer via:
http://localhost:631/
For administrative tasks, you need to log in as admin:
root + administrator-password.
Your printer doesn't appear in the list, sorry.
Googling a bit, I saw that you are far from alone in this situation.
Just in case, have you been to this address:
https://forum.malekal.com/viewtopic.php?t=24080&start=
Towards the end of the discussion, a ppd file is suggested for controlling the device via cups (which doesn't exempt you from reading everything, it's interesting to compare experiences and they also talk about using cups).
Another one who succeeded:
https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?257176-Lexmark-x2670-not-working
If you are the same Zatox as the one in this message:
https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-20556519-pb-installation-imprimante-lexmark-x2670
you had used a driver for Mac OsX, you must have corrected that, I think.
Good luck

OK old-pain-in-the-neck, I took a look at the first link you mentioned, it seems very interesting, I’m going to dive into this stuff, but I need to be away for a few days so I’ll repost afterward to say if I made any progress. I also downloaded a ppd file a while ago, I need to check that out too. Regarding your question about whether it's the same zatox, yes of course, but for the driver I didn't see that it was a driver for Mac OSX, but I might have misread it seems to be for Red Hat, well I’ll look into all that and post as soon as I reach any conclusion. Thanks again for your help.
Ok, no problemo.
The ppd is to be used in cups instead of the driver (the one from the link requires cups 1.4, I believe).
For the Mac driver, it's in the lines you pasted:
/Library/Printers/Lexmark/Drivers/LexmarkCUPSDriver.app/Contents/MacOS
/LexmarkCUPSDriver
and it’s not a Linux directory structure either, /Library/ is OsX. No wonder you got: No such file or directory.
See you later then, have a good evening.

Hello, I'm back; I just did the operation mentioned in the first link, but it's still the same; it doesn't work, at least not every time. However, I have a message in the file /var/log/cups/error_log which is as follows:
Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more.
I'm not very good at English, but I understand that it probably means:
Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more.
So what I would like is to set this LogLevel, which I think should be a trace, but I don't know how to do it. If someone has an idea, please let me know.

Well, I just looked at my file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, here it is:

I don't have any of what you said on the ninth line, I only have the first line LogLevel Info. Should I replace this first line with LogLevel Debug? If so, I will back up cupsd.conf and then make the change, but afterwards, where do I retrieve the trace? Maybe in /var/log/cups/error_log?
Thank you for your response.

Re,
I would say yes to both. Detail, I need to be an admin to read /var/log/cups/error_log on my Debian.
I note that there is a reference to an IP 192.168.0.7 which is the type of IP provided by a router.
A completely random idea, in case of DHCP, could you not have installed your printer while you had this address and if your router assigns you another one, it won't print anymore?
Here is my /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, a bit different from yours but we have installed our printers through different means.

Re for your answer, yes for both, so I'll take the necessary steps for the rest. When you talk to me about the network, I'm a bit stuck; when you mention a router, I can't tell you if I have one between my PC and the printer. Can you tell me a bit more about that? I'll do the manipulation in a moment and I'll post back. Thanks for your help.
Re,
Well, I need some details here.
How is your internet connection set up, via a modem-router combination, a "box," a shared network, through wired connection or wifi?
And your printer, is it connected to your PC via USB, Ethernet, wifi, or are you using a print server?
If you are connected to the internet via Ethernet (with a cable between your PC and a box connected to the phone network), what does this command give (as root, so su or sudo)
ifconfig eth0
Modification at 21:03:
I'm cutting the connection due to a storm too close for my liking.
Catch you later.

OK, I'll respond to the best of my ability. The internet connection is established via a box, specifically a Neufbox, with an Ethernet cable between the PC and the box. My printer is connected to my PC via USB. Regarding the print server, I don't know. If CUPS is what you call a print server, then I think yes. A bit further down, I'll give you some indications on this. Next, the command ifconfig eth0 produces the following:
[root@localhost robert]# ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:8C:0D:3B:40

Then here are some things that are happening that might help you better understand my problem:
When I want to reinstall my printer, I start by removing the 2 printers that appear in MCC (and yes I have 2 printers in MCC while during installation I only aimed to have one!!!! I don't even know why). Here’s the message I get after deleting a printer: CUPS server error An error occurred during the CUPS operation: “client-error-not-found”.
If instead of deleting the printer through MCC, I go through CUPS (http://localhost:631), after deleting the printer I get the following message: Error:
The printer or class was not found.
I don’t know what we can conclude from this, but in both cases, these are still somewhat curious messages that may indicate that not everything is clean, what do you think?
Well, that’s it for now, or rather not quite, I also wanted to tell you that it's nice of you to try to help me, but if it poses too much of a problem for you, don’t hesitate to tell me, otherwise, it helps me a lot because it also allows me to progress in Linux, and I’d really like to know the end of the story about why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, and all that randomly.
@+ and thanks again.
For your information, I’m putting below the result of ifconfig -a, I don’t know if it will help you, but well, who can do more can do less:

Hello,
I also don't see why there are two printers, but it could lead to misrouting errors.
Personally, I would uninstall the printer (both of them), remove the configuration files, and possibly (if really upset) do a complete removal and reinstallation of CUPS and then try to install the printer only via localhost:631 using the PPD (https://forum.malekal.com/viewtopic.php?t=24080&start= ) as the configuration file (instead of the driver since there isn't one).
Forget about the MMC (Mandriva Configuration Center?) for now; it probably just serves as an intermediary for CUPS. If there’s really no way to do it with CUPS alone, you can always go back to it later.
The print server I was talking about is a box that you put between the printer and the network so that multiple computers can use the same printer without mixing up the files. But with direct USB, you’re not concerned.
Did /var/log/cups/error_log not yield anything interesting?
You are indeed behind a router, which is your box. When you did ifconfig your IP was 192.168.1.20 and I really don't understand where this 192.168.0.7 is coming from in your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file; it's not in the same range (192.168.1.n and 192.168.0.n), and by the way, why it’s there since the printer is not on the network.
Just in case, if your box allows it, set it to always have the same IP.
If it supports that, it's called an address reservation; you give it your MAC address (00:24:8C:0D:3B:40) and tell it to reserve an IP for you (like 192.168.1.20). Do this before reinstalling the printer; I don't know if it will help, but it won't hurt.
Sorry for not being more specific, I’m discovering CUPS at the same time as you, actually 8-( but I’d really like to understand too :-).
I wonder if there's indeed a permissions issue lurking beneath this (cf your post from August 11, 2011 at 11:39).
Good luck, see you later.

Hi, well I just did the manipulations as you instructed, that is to say I first went into the administrator of my Neufbox, I went to the network tab (I'm detailing a bit because I hope this is what I was supposed to do), then the DHCP tab, and in a section titled "static addresses" I set the IP address 192.168.1.20 next to my MAC address that I entered. Please, can you explain to me what this IP address 192.168.1.20 is!!!!!!
Then I removed everything related to Lexmark via MCC. Then I deleted my printers. After that, I uninstalled and reinstalled CUPS, and then through CUPS, I added a printer. I had previously placed the PPD file in /etc/cups/ppd and I selected it during the printer addition via CUPS.
I did a test print and I got the message "Printer lexmark_2600_series cups-missing-filter."
I will retrieve what I have in error_log and I will repost. Talk to you later because I have something to do.

Well, here I am again. I just tested the printer and first, in MCC, the printer is mentioned with a logo like a road sign, a triangular orange background and an exclamation mark in the middle, which is not a good sign in my opinion.
Then, the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf has changed considerably; it looks just like yours, so I replaced LogLevel warn (9th line) with LogLevel debug. I don't know if it changed anything, but here is the content of the file /var/log/cups/error_log
E [18/Aug/2011:16:32:23 +0200] Unable to execute /Library/Printers/Lexmark/Drivers/LexmarkCUPSDriver.app/Contents/MacOS/LexmarkCUPSDriver: No such file or directory

E [18/Aug/2011:16:32:23 +0200] [Job 749] Stopping job because the scheduler could not execute a filter.
So, you see it keeps bringing me back to the scenario /Library/Printers/Lexmark/Drivers/LexmarkCUPSDriver.app/Contents/MacOS/LexmarkCUPSDriver
which corresponds to MACOS, even though I didn't ask for it!!!!!!!!!!
Weird, right?!!!
That's where I am; if you have any idea for the next step, because I don't know where this structure is specified and even if I knew, I wouldn't know what to replace it with!!!!!!!!!! But maybe, little by little, we are making some progress

This damn PPD is for Mac!
I just opened it and that's where you'll find the lines you copied.
I'm looking.
There's a method here (at the end of the thread) but for Ubuntu, it sucks for Mandriva.
They also talk about modifying Mac PPDs!
A simpler one with .deb (Debian), you'll have to uninstall once again before applying the method:
http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=3796324
I'm adding a bit :)
Apparently, the PPD is a descriptor for the printer that is interpreted by CUPS.
I checked my HP one in /etc/cups/ppd, no trace of /lib/machin.
Make a copy of your Mac PPD and remove all lines containing a /Library/ that reference paths unknown to the penguin and do a test (you need to restart CUPS but I don't know how, other than restarting the PC).
Otherwise, have you tried the method from here:
https://forum.malekal.com/viewtopic.php?t=24080&start=
install the driver provided by Lexmark and then install via CUPS and modify the file:
lexmark/config/run.lua
Well, this isn't easy, it's not progressing quickly (but you have a somewhat more standard install now, it's a shame it doesn't work).
Good luck, to be continued.

Well, on the site you gave me, it seems to consist of doing what I've already done, which is to install the appropriate driver (uhm!!!), then redoing the action at the CUPS level. I'm going to see if there's anything a bit different compared to what I was doing, and I'll redo the process, but I fear we might find ourselves in a situation where the printer works randomly!!! Well, I'll see, but first I need to explain something to you: indeed, the PPD I have is for macOS, but when you add a printer without referring to the PPD, it adds a PPD file in /etc/cups/ppd, and when you delete this printer, it deletes the PPD file. So what I did was, before deleting the printer, I copied the PPD file created by the addition of the printer under another name, for example: when created, it generates the file Lexmark_2600_Series.ppd. Before deleting the printer, I copy Lexmark_2600_Series.ppd to Lexmark_2600_Series_save.ppd. Then I delete the printer; the file Lexmark_2600_Series.ppd is deleted, but the file Lexmark_2600_Series_save.ppd is still in /etc/cups/ppd. So I make a copy of Lexmark_2600_Series_save.ppd to Lexmark_2600_Series.ppd and then recreate my printer and call the file Lexmark_2600_Series.ppd in the creation. Well, it's still not working, but I don’t have the missing filter issue. I’m going to print something, and I'll attach the error_log file. Here it is, I’ll only give you the end because I think there are things that are repeating:

Well, there you go!!!!!!!!!!

A priori, I don’t see any glaring anomalies, but I need to look better.
Thank you and see you later
Oh!! Wait, I have a message in a little window under KDE that says this:
Print error there was a problem while printing the document "doc name" (job 753) "Stopping job because the scheduler could not execute a filter"
Well, there you go!!!!!!!!!!
This time I have to step out, see you later and thanks again.
Ahouille !!,
This is getting too tough for me.
I see a lot of "cupsdSetBusyState: Dirty files" and a "No default printer" message, but I admit I'm spinning my wheels.
The cups documentation is extensive, but I'm not quite sure where to look (and the bulk of it is in English, of course).
By the way, to restart cups without rebooting the PC, you can use:
sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart
Sorry, no information or suggestions for now, there's some research to be done.
Have a good evening.

Hello old-pain, I think our last two messages crossed paths. So to summarize regarding your last message, the method in the first link you gave me didn't work. The method of removing all lines that reference unknown paths from the penguin containing /Library/ didn't work either; in this case, when I print, I don't even have a queue.
Then I re-did the third method mentioned in the second link you provided, which I had already done, but with a slight difference, I summarize it below:
I deleted all printers and then I installed the driver lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.rpm.sh (I believe that generally rpm is for Mandriva and perhaps other distributions) then I went into CUPS, added a printer, and that's where I had a difference with what I was doing before, I checked the Lexmark USB Backend #1 button (Lexmark 2600 Series instead of checking the Lexmark 2600 Series button (Lexmark 2600 Series) the problem is that this first button doesn't always appear !!!!!!!) Anyway, I did that last night, I printed and it worked, I shut down and restarted the computer, I set chmod 766 on /dev/usb hiddev1 and lp0, I printed again, it worked and this morning I just did this chmod again, it also worked (plus I'm printing a pdf with drawings and color.) So I don't know if it will last, maybe for the next print it won't work, I'll see and keep you updated. So regarding the installation I did before, there are 2 differences:
1) the positioning of the IP address and MAC address at the level of my neufbox
2) The choice of the printer I just indicated at CUPS
Now what I would like to do is automatically set the 2 chmods at startup. I think I can write that in a bash file but I don't know where to put this file for the chmod command to be executed automatically.
Well, that's it, that said, I'm not sure it will work every time.
So if you want me to do manipulations, no problem, just let me know because I think I can return to this situation without any issues and hoping it will continue to work.
A small detail if you know, can you tell me 2 things:
1) The IP address I set in my neufbox, is that the address of my printer?!!!
2) In /dev/usb, the entities hiddev1 and lp0 are of course related to my printer, but what exactly are they?
Thank you for your help and see you soon.
As soon as I do another test after shutdown and restart, I'll let you know if it works or not.
Uh, another small problem that occurs from time to time but quite rarely in /dev/usb presents itself like this:
crwxrw-rw- 1 root root 180, 1 2011-08-19 09:23 hiddev1
crw-rw---- 1 root root 180, 2 2011-08-19 09:23 hiddev2
crwxrw-rw-+ 1 root lp 180, 0 2011-08-19 09:23 lp0
You see that I set chmod 766 on hiddev1 and lp0, sometimes it's for example hiddev0 hiddev1 and lp1 instead of lp0 !!!!!!!!! I believe this is going to be an issue
Ouch ouch ouch false alarm, it crashed again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! too bad it no longer works.

Hello Zatox,
Finally some good news, let's hope it lasts.
I'm at work now, just Windows at my disposal and a very limited internet access, so for the information on the nature of hiddev and lp, that's a no-go. I'll check that later this evening. But it should indeed be related to the printer and USB.
The address in the neufbox is that of your computer on your network, the printer not being on the network does not have an address; however, if you have a second PC, you can share it via the first through its IP. That's the point of having a static IP, no need to scan the entire network to find a machine, you just enter its address and it's good.
I don't think that affects the printer's operation, I had you do the manipulation based on your old /etc/cups/cupsd.conf which contained network addresses.
But since you now have a standard cupsd.conf...
To run your modification .sh, there is a file in KDE that handles applications launched at startup but I can't recall it off the top of my head; otherwise, there are also the crontabs and the cron-daily file that can do that.
Did you make sure to add yourself to the lp group by the way?
Another possibility (not sure, needs testing), both hiddev are root root, try changing them to root your-group (with chown) to see if it works better (but not sure if it will persist).
Talk to you later, good luck.

Hi old-pain, for the file lexmark/config/run.lua I'll check that but right now it’s not working anymore, I did a test and it crashed. I have to step out the whole afternoon, I’ll look into it tonight, thanks for your research, see you later.
Good evening,
To launch a script.sh at the startup of KDE, you need to place it here:
/home/ivan/.kde/Autostart
But, it must be run as root, which is not easy if you want to avoid typing the password every time.
Otherwise, a file in
/etc/cron.daily
with root as the owner will work.
I don’t have a "hiddev" in /dev/, I have /dev/bus/usb/001, 002, 003...
I have an lp0, dated today, with 0 bytes belonging to root and lp (rw for both). But since my printer is networked, that should change things.
I keep looking but it always leads back to the same issue; for some it works fine and others have a hard time.
For the file
lexmark/config/run.lua
apparently it needs to be modified during the driver installation, but I struggle to understand if it prevents the driver from crashing or the installation itself.
Too bad our thread isn't attracting much attention; any other ideas would be welcome.
Good luck and have a nice evening.

Good evening, I found a readme.txt file for the Lexmark and I don’t know how to send it to you through CCM, but I’ll share the first lines because there are some interesting things. Already you will see regarding the supported distributions by the Lexmark 2600 series, Mandriva is not listed, which I understood while searching online, but since it works sometimes and even works well, I wanted to know why it’s random that one time it works and another time it doesn’t.
Then you will see in chapter 6 when going through CUPS, at the moment of adding the printer, if “Lexmark USB Backend #1 (Lexmark 2600 Series)” is not in the list, that means the PC cannot see the printer, at least that’s what I understand with my limited English knowledge, and that ties back to what I was saying earlier, that sometimes it’s there and sometimes it’s not !!!!!!!!!!
Check out chapter 6, it’s interesting, the question remains why sometimes I see you and sometimes I don’t !!!!!!
By the way, if you know how to attach a .txt file on the forum, if you give me the steps, I can send you the complete file.
Alright, see you later, I’m going to grab a bite at the restaurant !!

Was the restaurant good?
I found the doc on the Net, you had almost everything in there. Then there's "8. Uninstallation:" and "9. Open Source:" with all the blah blah about licenses. I found that on a German forum, it's the only doc I could understand :-)).
Basically, it's what you've already done for the installation; they don't give the magic formula for when it gets stuck.
I read on other forums that you had to reboot the PC for it to see the thing, but apparently, that was only at installation, for you it's more often.
Otherwise, yes, it is well stated that if cups does not offer "Lexmark USB Backend #1 (Lexmark 2600 Series)" it means the printer is not detected. And also that there is no specific driver for Mandriva :-(.
Do you have /usr/lexinkjet/lxk08/etc/lx2600.ppd (just out of curiosity)?
Have you run lsusb when your printer isn't recognized, to see if there's nothing detected or an unknown device or something else instead?
That could also be a test to do before attempting to print; is there a detected printer or not, I suppose you've unplugged and plugged the USB cable many times already.
I see that this printer can also scan; does that part work?
And when it fails to print, is the scanner stuck too?
Could the PC be trying to print to the scanner <8+))...
See you, I'm going to join Morpheus.
