MKV PLAYBACK ON TV Solved

Question

Hello,

I have a little question.
I am looking to buy a TV with a USB port (image, sound, video).
But I wonder if this TV will be able to read my MKV files?
If it doesn't read them, I was thinking that by buying a multimedia external hard drive that reads MKV, my TV could then read them... is that true?

Hello,

on a lot of TV models, the USB port is restricted: it can only read images. This process is used to combat piracy by preventing the user from viewing pirated works through it.

Moreover, MKV compatibility is quite rare on TVs, which often limit themselves to AVI and MP4... be sure to check the product page on the manufacturer's website for compatible formats.

If you buy a multimedia hard drive, the problem no longer exists: if the drive can read MKVs, simply connect your hard drive to your TV (ideally via an HDMI cable) to enjoy your videos.

Hello,
if your multimedia hard drive supports HD, it handles the video decoding, so yes, if your hard drive reads MKV and your TV supports HD, then it will work

Thank you for your responses, that's very kind.
Actually, to tell you the truth, my real concern is that my mom wanted to give me a television. However, I don't watch TV much, I mostly watch downloaded movies (yes, I know it's bad^^), that's why I wanted to make sure I could watch my films in optimal quality since my films are in .mkv 720p or 1080p...
Another question by the way, what is the best format to get the best possible image quality on my LG television?

Do you think that watching an .AVI movie on an 81cm TV will provide a perfectly watchable image?  Thank you :)

It all depends on the resolution of the video. But on a Full HD TV, watching an ultra-compressed DVD rip (700MB and under) is noticeable, it's ugly.

To get the best possible rendering, you need a quality equivalent to Blu-Ray: so if it's mkv, it should be 1080p.

If you don't want to invest in an expensive multimedia hard drive, you can use a gateway like this one

You connect it to your TV (via HDMI for optimal quality), and either you plug in a USB stick with your files on it, or you connect it to your box via an Ethernet cable. By doing this and setting it up correctly, you will be able to play files stored on your PC from your sofa :)

We bought a Sony 40HX800 for the living room yesterday too, 700€ instead of 1300 :D, is it normal that the TNT channels are not in HD? ^^ They look less nice than channels 1, 2, 5, and 6 :P
