Reception issues during bad weather Solved

Question

Hello everyone, my problem arises from poor satellite reception during stormy days. The reception of Canal Sat is very good in nice weather (which is rare where I live, in the northeast of France) but becomes bad as soon as it rains. How can I get good reception regardless of the weather? I would like to point out that on my decoder, the reception scale is 4.5/5.

I just solved this reception problem in bad weather by simply covering the head with a small plastic bottle that I cut, leaving plenty of the bottle sticking out on top, like a cap brim.
Guaranteed results...

it's one of the advantages (in one or two words, lol) of satellite reception!!
If your alignment is good, reception only becomes poor in heavy rain, like during a storm (whether it's at your place or at the transmitter, don't forget that!)
You should know that in satellite reception, the alignment tolerance is around + or - 0.5 degrees both vertically and horizontally, and no obstacle, in the optical sense of the term, should be in the line of sight—think of tree branches that grow in spring, for example! Then, the polarization adjustment (rotation of the head in its support) must also be correct.
If everything is good (and if the reception gets worse at the slightest rain), you need to either change the head (which lacks sensitivity) or increase the diameter of the dish.
One thing that works well for optimizing alignment is to set the reverse polarization (compared to the satellite you want to watch); in this case, the image should be almost non-existent, so adjust the alignment and then the polarization until the image disappears completely.
This method is more precise than the bar graph of the demodulators, which tend to "saturate" at the maximums.

another possibility (tested at home) is simply to put a cover (a sort of hat) over the top. Of course, you will need to make sure that it is neither too big, as it could lose signal, nor too small, as rain would compromise this little setup. I used a small piece of flexible plastic recovered from a box and wrapped it around the top to make a sort of cone 4 cm long. This will prevent water droplets from settling on the top and diffracting the rays. In case of heavy rain, this trick may have its limits, it's up to you to decide. Now, just need to get up on the roof!!!

it's always the weakest who suffer. I return to my diagnosis based on experience, which consists of placing a sufficiently large satellite dish. Any experienced satellite installer will tell you that you need what you need, and even a bit more than the antennas provided in the kits, which are just fine in good weather but as soon as the cloud cover increases (over forty kilometers thick in a stormy sky), the satellite signal drops significantly, and if the antenna has been aimed haphazardly, it won't work anymore. The weakest channels disappear, and in digital, it's a guaranteed black screen with the accompanying nervous breakdown. I replaced a 60 cm dish with a 90 cm one, and I've never had any issues with Astra since, and that lasted a long time, even through winter. Two exceptions: snow, but that doesn't last; it melts, and a heavy hail shower, which also doesn't last long.

Check the magazine website www.telesatellite.com for the satellite coverage areas; the maps are well done and particularly specify the minimum diameter of the dishes needed for proper reception in a defined area. I insist that the diameter is all the more important as the "coverage" is weak; this is not made up, especially in digital where it's all or nothing. In analog, you would see white or black spots in the image, which was a sign of weak reception. You also talk about the LNB cap; you should never operate the dish without this protection. Your cap, certainly sold at a high price, is a gadget; do not put any miracle product on the dish because after a while, dust will stick and reduce the ability to reflect the signals from your dish, believe me. As for the wind, I've lived by the North Sea for over twenty years, and at 150 km, a properly fixed dish doesn't move! Even a 100 cm metal one with a rotor.

Recommended antenna diameters are noted and usage reserves for borderline cases are indicated. Forget the Mc Gyver section for capping the LNBs and don't enclose them in plastic (condensation). On the day when there is a good thunderstorm passing, it’s best to turn off electrical and electronic devices that are seriously vulnerable to electrostatic discharges (lightning) and rapid surges in the power grid (in a fraction of a second, 220V can turn into 440V or more). Finally, know that satellite uplink stations are also affected and there, it may be nice at your place? DTT and many terrestrial transmitters are also supplied by satellite, everyone suffers and we can't do anything about it, it always happens. The cloud layer during a storm can reach and exceed 40 km in thickness (great signal attenuation on the way there and back - uplink > satellite > your antenna ??

my satellite experience goes back "ages" (C band in my early days!) it should also not be forgotten that the uplink (source) station is also on Earth and can also be disturbed; I noticed that sometimes without storm rain at my place the image would disappear in digital. In analog, we had clicks (white or black noise that could grow until the image was lost) at least there we knew why. So knowing a bit about the location of European uplink stations, I knew if there was a big storm here or there (Mr. Weather 2). One last word regarding the LNB cap, it won't have much of a positive effect on reception; on the contrary, the condensation that quickly forms in this "volume" can degrade a just or weak signal, similarly, the heat from the sun can overheat the electronic circuits of the LNB which have a temperature tolerance range to function properly. I improved my digital reception comfort by using an old 90cm dish from the heroic era (back then, a permit was required at 1 meter) a favorable spot under a "ledge" of my roof also allowed me to keep this antenna dry (lucky break!) but when there are disruptions, it's no longer my fault! One last word: my antenna was pointed by an installer and firmly secured; neither the "guess" nor the compass work here.
