Hello,
My question is as follows: I wanted to know how to access the service menu of this Sony recorder in order to format the new hard drive that I replaced, as it is not recognized by the player. I can't find any information on the internet or in the manual that explains how to access the "Service mode". I know that this service exists on older and newer Sony players
My goal is to format this new hard drive into a special partition that is indeed "not recognized by Windows" but is recognized by the player... Currently, my hard drive remains unusable...

Maybe you could try a factory reset by pressing and holding the "stop playback" button (the little square!) and then the Power/Standby button on the burner....?!

Thank you, I tried to do it, I see that the menu has changed to English, etc... without really warning on the LCD display, but for the hard drive, it still shows the error.
Is there any way to switch to service mode like other players to format it via the player? Or is there any software that can format this disk so that it is finally recognized by the player?

First of all, I hope you bought the same one as the original because you just have to replace it and it works, and it's empty, so there's no partition to do or anything. The recorder is not a PC
For the service menu, it should have a jack input (generally), and it's made to connect a measuring device to see the history of the device's malfunctions (by Sony), not for tuning
Either format it or update it

The original one is a Hitachi 160GB, less silent than the one I want to install: Seagate Barracuda or WD Caviar Green, both are SATA-II.
The drive I want to install has no partitions; it is completely empty.
Could updating resolve this issue?
The service menu on other Sony drives is accessible by pressing certain buttons, and then the freedom to format the new drive.
If it doesn't work, can we find software to format this drive manually via the PC?

I changed it on a rdr hx 900 (also a Hitachi) and there was a label on it (replace with the same) and it worked without doing anything else, otherwise there's a good chance it won't work, it's not on a PC, we can't do whatever we want
where is the service menu button (recorder or remote control) and what is the REF (and are you sure it's a button)

I updated it, but it doesn't change anything for the hard drive. We can't format it from the system menu because this drive is not recognized; otherwise, it's possible to format the Hitachi drive via the system menu.
On older player models (HX 725), you can switch to service mode by pressing Open/Close and Play simultaneously (on the player, the buttons furthest to the left in the right control block), holding them down, and that will switch to service mode.
My player is newer; I happen to have exactly that button interface, I tried to do this manipulation but it doesn't work...
It's curious that they want us to use the same brand of HDD... -

Hello,
It seems to me, if I remember correctly, that you will find this feature by pressing the "System Menu" button on the remote, then "Disk Settings". There should be an option "Format HDD".
Perhaps you have already done this or maybe it doesn't correspond to what you want to do... -
Have you found a way to display this "service menu"?
My searches on the Net suggest pressing 2 buttons (Open and Play) at the same time. However, this method would work with the 525 model or even the 725, but not the 890.
