You can't transfer anything from the terminal to a USB drive. The USB port on your terminal is for installing an external hard drive to add recording hours.

A FireWire port is not just for MAC. It is a protocol invented by Mac, but it is universal, IEEE1394 standard.

the FireWire port was invented by SONY and not by Apple...
Many computers now have this port otherwise you can buy a card (around $20.)
with video editing software that allows capture from a FireWire port (e.g. Corel Videostudio) you will not only be able to copy but also make the necessary cuts... killing two birds with one stone!

Apple gave the "commercial" name FireWire to 1394. Sony didn't invent anything in that regard. There was a certain partnership so that Apple could have usable devices, including Sony's.
