Hello,
I am reaching out to you because I have a big problem with a USB key.
It is a retractable Sony Microvault 8GB USB key purchased about 2 years ago.
Yesterday, the key was working perfectly, I copied files onto it without any issues (no slowdown or signs of weakness whatsoever). Today, for no apparent reason, the key is not working anymore. When I connected it, the driver installation was triggered (even though it was already installed???), and this installation took ages to complete. In the end, I noticed that the key had changed its name (previously identified as "Sony memory USB device", now it is "USB MEMORY BAR USB device"), and in "Computer" it appears as "Removable Disk (L:)" instead of "Sony (L:)", and the usage space estimation bar has disappeared.
I then disconnected the key (but I had to forcibly unplug it because the key's light was permanently on while I was doing nothing with it (obviously) and it was impossible to disable it via Windows), and I uninstalled both drivers with USB Deview. I then reconnected the key and it was the same ordeal, it took forever to reinstall the "USB MEMORY BAR USB device" driver, but this time, nothing shows up in "Computer".
I tried going into Disk Management (right-click on "Computer" then "Manage") to format the key (the files I have on the key are also on my PC), but I couldn't find this key there (only my hard drive and my CD/DVD drives are listed). Moreover, the key's light stays permanently on (even though I can do nothing with it, obviously) while it has been connected to my PC for nearly half an hour, and it's impossible to eject it using the Windows menu, which means I will have to forcibly unplug it again.
I tested it on both of my PCs, and the problem remains the same. I would like to know if there is a last-ditch solution to recover the key or if it is ready for the trash.
Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 4.0

If the key appears, click on start, then run and type cmd. In the command window, enter the letter in question, that is to say the letter corresponding to the key. Once finished, type format the letter then space /u.
Try this, if it doesn't work your key is unfortunately faulty:
Start, then type in the search: diskmgmt.msc and press enter.
Go to disk management, check if your key appears, and also look at the name it has. (For example: Disk 1)
Now you can close the window, remember the name of the key (Disk 1), open the start menu, type CMD and press enter, the Windows command prompt will open. Type diskpart and press enter.
Then type "select disk" without the quotes, followed by the disk number found earlier (Disk 1 so the number is 1), you type "select disk 1" and press enter.
Now cleaning the key, type "clean", a message will appear to indicate that everything went well.
Now type "exit" to quit and then close the command prompt.
Go back to the disk management window, right-click on the key and choose New Simple Volume, click next three times without changing anything. Choose FAT32 in the file system and that’s it, now test the key, if it doesn't work, there is a strong chance that it is faulty and unrecoverable.

Thank you, but I already tried that (it's written in my first message), the key does not appear in the disk manager, so it's impossible to use diskpart.
In this case, wait for responses from other members, but for me, she is dead.

Good evening,
After trying countless techniques to try to get the key working again, nothing works.
I thought I had succeeded thanks to a solution proposed on Sony's website (https://campaign.odw.sony-europe.com/support/index.html), the key is detected by the software. But when it starts working on the key, it completely freezes my PC (it locks up and I can't do anything).
So the USB key is dead, well done Sony! Even my old messed-up Memorex performs better (still functional after 4 years, even though the circuit doesn't hold anymore and its light is dead).
