Hi, yes of course it’s possible. You go to the display menu (in English I think it’s “view”) and you check the option to show the legend (scale) (in English I don’t know how it’s written, but it should be the last option in the menu) -- hoping to have helped you!
In fact, very few of you are interested in the scale (about 3.5 billion), which is why Google Earth considers it unnecessary to display it by default (yes yes yes, I know, a small very discreet black line doesn't hinder the view at all, but it's a matter of personal taste for Mr. Google, and it's his right). You have to waste your time in the options, blah blah blah, then on the internet, to discover the well-hidden trick you propose... which doesn't work on my computer. There you go, there you go. Well, yes, you figure it out, you curse the incompetent people managing this software, and you keep wasting your time. Just like me. By the way, I am applying for the position of general manager of Google Earth. I have plenty of great ideas to "improve" this software. But even crazier ideas than removing the scale... I’m also applying for the same position at Mappy, which also refuses to display the scale on its maps (that would be too easy...). Sorry to the question-asking readers, but I don't have an answer to this obvious question about an absurdity that should have been resolved years ago... The first world maps under the Babylonians already included a scale, but the biggest current software has decided it serves no purpose. The Babylonians really look young again, wow!!!

I think the same thing as you, in fact, at first I thought it was me who had a problem, because it should have been displayed somewhere in an obvious way that I couldn't find, but now I realize that it takes a whole manual to find it; I would have never succeeded if I hadn't consulted this site. It really is an aberration.
Sorry, I found out why the trick mentioned above didn’t work on my computer: it's because the scale displays under the photo gallery shown at the bottom of the screen. You need to close it (click on the small double arrow next to it) to see the scale appear. This gallery is useless as it displays photos unrelated to the location you are pointing at. It's just there to take up a bit more screen space, which is already being hogged on the left and the top. Another brilliant idiocy from Google Earth... My application is still valid.
