Good evening,
Here’s my problem.
I am the administrator of a forum on forumactif.
When I am on a message posted by one of my members and I click on the "IP" icon, I notice that other members are logging in and posting under the same IP address????
This shows me: "Users posting from this IP address"
and there are the names of 5 forum members.
Is it possible that this member has created multiple profiles on my forum under different identities with different email addresses? I checked, and this is the only member who is affected.
I don't understand anything!
Thank you for your help.
PS: I am a novice in this matter, please take that into account!

Hello!
IP addresses can be dynamic or static.
A static IP is associated with a person in a... static way ;-)
But very often (most of the time), IPs are dynamic, which means they change with each reconnection:
- The same person has a different IP almost every day;
- When a person disconnects, their IP can be used by another person (from the same Internet service provider, however): several people can successively have the same IP.
Obviously, if messages from your members are posted by the same member within a few minutes of each other, and this happens repeatedly, it may mean that a member has created multiple accounts, but that's far from certain.
Ultimately, the IP address alone, due to its often dynamic nature, is a very unreliable means of identifying a person on the Internet.
However, be careful: each Internet service provider keeps records of the correspondence between the IP and the date/time of connection. And it is with the date/time and the IP that one can reliably identify a person (indeed, two people cannot be connected at the same time with the same IP).
For more information about IP addresses:

To summarize: you just have to ask the member in question ;-))

Hi,
So yes, it's possible that it's a person who has created multiple accounts.
However, in a university, a school, or a company, outgoing connections often have the same IP address (while several people are using the internet from the internal network. 100 people connected to the internet from different PCs in the same school will have the same IP address.)
The same goes for internet cafés...

And it is possible for multiple people to have the same IP address if they are using the same proxy (for example, that of their Internet service provider) or if they are in the same company.
One must absolutely rid oneself of the idea that an IP = a person
or an IP = a computer.

Hello,
I am also an administrator of a forum. Even if people are not in the same physical location, they can have the same IP address. If they work for the same company, the servers are often located at the headquarters; before appearing on a forum, their message automatically goes through the headquarters' servers.
But there are also the crafty ones who post under different usernames and are just one and the same person. Often both cases exist in forums.
Best regards.

Hello,
I am in the same situation as batboy 78, and I am currently in this case (except that here, there is evidence showing that the member is indeed 3 of the 7 concerned usernames). This address is a cache from AOL but the IP is indeed the same. I am in a delicate position since the troublesome member is a very active member of my forum.
So, is it one person or 7??? Knowing that:
- these 7 girls live in different parts of France (so it’s not possible to be from the same company, etc...)
- these girls all have an IP address with an AOL cache
??????
I must admit that normally I would let it go, but this time it personally affects us since a forum barbecue is being organized during the holidays....
You also know that we cannot request personal information about an IP without going through the courts, and in any case, the information will be given to the police before it reaches me.
I do not want to press charges... why? Mythomania....^^... let’s stay sensible.
Thank you for your help.

Hello everyone!!!!
I have a problem because I found out while chatting with a colleague that a friend has the same IP address as me....that said, she lives in Paris and I live near Toulon (two opposite corners of France) and yet the IP is exactly the same...how is that possible? Isn't the IP address supposed to be unique to each person?

In trying to analyze her IP address, you must have analyzed yours simply, unless by mere chance:
You retrieved your IP before disconnecting, it connected and took its IP, you reconnected and noticed that her IP is the same as yours..
not very likely, I lean more towards the first solution.

Hello, I am also a moderator on a community site and I have the same problem as Sniper. One person is taking multiple identities and chatting with themselves using different characters. The IP is the same... but sometimes when I locate them the location is different...
What can I do to prove that it is the same person?
Thank you in advance.
