My PS3 keeps shutting down on its own...

Hello,

And here we go again! I sent my PS3 3 times in 7 months to customer service in 2009. Today, I was playing quietly to Black Ops when it turned off by itself. The red light is flashing. I turned it back on, and it asks me to turn it off properly, and when I restart, it shuts down again.

So here it is, I’m not a big gamer. So please, no overheating stories. My question is: is there a way to recover it, or should I send it to customer service once again?

Hello, I have a problem with my PS3. As soon as we try to turn it on, the button is green at first and then it shuts off immediately.

You don’t necessarily have to be a heavy user to experience overheating ^^
It might be a dust issue; if you don’t play it much, try to run it a bit idle when it’s on to use the fan and try to clear out some dust.
Is it in a closed space? Does it collect dust? Did you hear any unusual or louder-than-usual noises before it shut down?

Hello Aikannaro, and thank you for your reply. No unusual noise before it turns off, no bugs with the image, it just shuts down with a beep. Not really in a closed space, it's in a TV/video cabinet and I make sure to allow for ventilation. For now, I've taken out the game and turned off the console completely (from the switch in the back). I could try vacuuming it before attempting to run it empty. I'm not saying I hardly play it.

Personally, even playing quite a bit, I have a lot of dust getting inside and my fan is struggling (maybe because it's the first version of the PS3). Try that and let me know if it works.
A friend of mine had the same issue on Xbox 360 while playing Call of Duty MW 2, except he could never turn it on again. In your case, that should be fine.
If it's still under warranty, you can take it to the store where you bought it, if it really doesn't work, of course, and if it's no longer under warranty and the problem persists, check out French gaming community sites for PS3 to take off the casing and do a deep clean (don't do it if you're not sure of yourself!).

Regarding the PS3 handling, I will let the technical service take care of it (even though I hope it won't come to that). Just so you know, they have already repaired/replaced the PS3 for me even out of warranty... So I imagine they will do it again this time, at least I hope so!

Without charging you? My store (not to name it) asks for something if I remember correctly. But if yours does it, then what more could you ask for? ^^ But first, make sure to back up your files on a USB drive. You never know if they'll change it; at least you won't lose anything.

Yes, without paying anything. It's Sony's direct after-sales service. Thanks for the backup advice, you are absolutely right. I've taken note since I've already sent it 3 times!!

My PS3 used to do the same thing, and I ran the vacuum over it (but not with a shotgun) and now it works fine =)

So turn off the PS3, take out the game, then turn it off with the power button at the back. After that, hold down the eject button on the console and turn it back on with the button at the back while still holding down the eject button. The fan will start up for a quick cleaning. After that, remain with the button at the back and test it. Let me know if it works. There you go, a little advice.

I turn on my PS3 and it turns off after 5 seconds, I can't even remove

I have a similar problem to Khul but not exactly the same, so here it is: I was in Madrid, I was leaving Madrid for Paris, so I took the plane. When I arrived home, I plugged in my PS3 that I had brought from Madrid on the plane, and I turned it on. The green light appeared, but after 3 seconds, it turned orange and then blinking red. I pressed once and it turned red without blinking. I pressed again, but it does the same thing.
So, can someone please help me?

Hi,

It’s a Ylod, your PS3 is simply burning out.
There are several techniques to make it survive a few more days/months:

- Wrap it in a duvet or a sheet and run it as much as possible like that
- Dismantle it down to the motherboard and put it in the oven (heat for 30 minutes at 200°, put it in for 5 minutes with the oven on, then turn off the oven and let it cool down)

These solutions aim to reflow the dried solder that causes this. The second technique seems tough to do, but if you want to get into it, I can help you (I've done it a handful of times).

Otherwise, you can send it to Sony for about €150, and if it’s still in one piece, they’ll repair it for you/send you a new one (yes, a friend had that luck once).

Nothing ventured, nothing gained in any case. Hello everyone, I see that this is a common problem with the PS3. Mine struggles to start and with each attempt it beeps three times in a row (beep beep beep), then stops and the power light flashes red. After 30 minutes of trying to turn it on, it finally starts, then gives you 8 minutes of gameplay and stops again. And when I try to restart it, it does so immediately but then displays that (the system was not shut down properly, please restore the system file; if the system is not restored, it may take 2 to 3 hours and then the system will restart.) and this happens every time, so I’m losing hope; it just makes me want to throw it away.

The real problem is that you simply need to change the thermal paste that is on the processor of the console and on the small copper reservoir of the radiator and you're good to go, my friend!!!
