I just got this cam but I'm new to this field. I only know that the software provided with it is 0 (picture package). With Windows Movie Maker, I managed to capture the data on my computer but through USB, and the quality is not good. Please help me, I'm struggling! Thank you.

Hello,
With a camcorder, you should never use the USB output; the results are disappointing. You need to use the DV output of your camcorder, which should be connected via a cable (to be purchased) to your PC's FIREWIRE or IEEE 1394 input if your PC has that input. You can use MOVIE MAKER to do your editing, and if you choose the right settings, the result should be perfect.
Keep us updated
Best regards
Constant

Thank you very much for the clarifications. I thought the USB output wasn’t the best. As for the DV output, I’ll fiddle with it. I believe it has a FireWire port, but are there different types of cables (I have a 4-pin male to 4-pin male cable)??? Last question, is Movie Maker available for free download? See you soon and thanks again.

Re,
Your camcorder has a DV output (so IEEE1394, or FIREWIRE, or ILINK, it's the same), I'm sure of that. Now we need to check your PC. As for MOVIE MAKER, it comes installed with Windows XP.
If you are not on XP, we will find something for you, let us know what version of WINDOWS you have.
Sincerely,
Constant

So I have XP and I see Movie Maker. For the PC, it's something that was recommended to me. According to the manual, the firewire port is optional. Are there different ports available?

Re, good evening or good morning...
For the iEEE1394, FIREWIRE, etc. input, if your PC doesn't have it, you'll need to buy the capture card, install it, or if you don’t know anything about it, ask someone to install it for you. It's not complicated, and moreover, it's automatically recognized by your PC; there's nothing to install. The price varies depending on where you buy it, but it should be around 25EUR. I don't know the exact price since I have access to wholesale prices; mine cost me 6.48EUR before tax on promotion, but don't tell anyone...
So at that price, you shouldn't miss out on getting quality video, and your camcorder is capable of it.
Best regards,
Constant

In fact, I just looked and I don't have a firewire port on my computer, so I'm going to install one this week and normally, if I'm not being silly (though I am a PE teacher, lol), it should work... Thanks Constant and if I need help, I'll come back. Bye!

Good evening Constant, I installed the firewire card but the problem is with Movie Maker; it closes as soon as I move a video to the timeline, is that normal? Thank you.

Thank you, it's much better especially with the tutoring!!! However, they don't say how to upload a video from the cam to the computer??? Do we need to use Nero or can we do it directly with VirtualDub? Good night

Hello,

VirtualDub is undoubtedly a powerful program, but it must be acknowledged that it's a real hassle for inexperienced people in the field of video.

In short, I want to say that my attempts to capture video with this software ended in failure.

I find that Windows Movie Maker works very well for capturing video from a camcorder. But once again, the processor and hard drive need to keep up with the pace.

My Sony DCR-TRV120E Digital8 camera is perfectly recognized by Win XP and WMM, through the IEEE 1394 port.

So much so that the playback and rewind functions of the camcorder tape are operated by WMM.

Moreover, there is a wide range of options regarding the quality of the output file.

I think that Microsoft has done a very good program in this genre.

Hi Judex,
thanks for the advice, but the problem is that WMM crashes as soon as I place the video on the timeline. I don't know where that's coming from, which is why Constant suggested VirtualDub to me... I'm just trying to edit videos from my vacations, for example. If anyone knows a solution, I'm all ears! Bye

Hello,

Yes, but in the end, did you manage to transfer the video from your camcorder to your HDD via your Firewire port?

For your video editing, have you tried Nero Vision?

Just to see if the problem is only with WMM.

Yes, I can transfer videos from my cam to my PC using FireWire.

Hello everyone,
I no longer remember the steps to capture with VirtualDub, but as Judex asked you: do you have Nero Vision? If so, give it a try, otherwise I’ll keep looking into why it crashes with WMM.
Try dropping only a photo or image like a .bmp that you create with PAINT into the WMM timeline, and let us know what happens.

So I'm on XP, I don't know what SP2 is but I searched for directx.9 + media player 9 and I couldn't find them... For my WMM I think it's the one installed with the XP CD. So I'm kind of in the dark. I'll leave you my MSN to make it faster (breizhkoala@yahoo.fr)

So I opened the DOS window and it's Microsoft XP version 5.1.2600
I'm waiting for the next step... lol

Hello,

To check if you have SP2, click on Start\Control Panel\System.

It should be clearly indicated in the "General" tab.

So for XP it's SP 2 but it still doesn't work. Good night.

Hello,

And with Nero Vision, the same problem? What is the size of your captured video file? Nevertheless, I find that you are a bit short on RAM to process video "comfortably."

Hello,
so with Nero there's no problem with capturing and using either on Nero Express or WMM!!! It's really a hassle with computers lol. For a trial film of 1'18 that takes me 13.5 MB.
I just want to make a movie that's a maximum of one hour, is that possible with what I have?
Another thing, how do I put together the edited video clips? Is there a process to follow so that it doesn't take up too much space and to burn it onto a DVD?
Thanks for everything.

However, I can't add any external audio tracks; the software automatically closes as soon as I try to preview what it looks like... Thank you for your help.

Re hello everyone
For your question regarding the video, I replied to your email address. For your sound issue, is it with NERO or WMM or both...?
Constant

With WMM I haven't tried it with Nero yet. Thanks for the email by the way.

I no longer use Nero because the few effects available are quite ugly (no fade in addition...). With WMM, I always have this problem of bugs as soon as I edit the timeline after adding an audio track or another sequence. Help please.

Hello,

I just did a perfect crossfade between two AVIs with Nero Vision. Is that not the type of effect you’re talking about?

Of course, there are specialized programs for video editing, like Cyberlink PowerDirector, which seem, given their features, to be very effective, but you still have to pay for them.

Still, I think that Nero can do quite a bit for its price.

Dac I didn't know that. Can you explain to me the steps to follow to get these fades and maybe some other cool effects because the added audio track works with Nero. Thanks Judex

Hello everyone,
Following Judex's intervention, I've started using Nero Vision again, which I had forgotten about for quite some time since I've been using Adobe Premiere. Indeed, you can make transitions; you open Nero Vision, create a movie, drop your clips onto the timeline, then in the upper right panel, go to the "Show Transitions" tab, then in the small box below, choose what you want and you’ll blend to your happiness...
I apologize to Judex for speaking out, but I put myself in your shoes, you’re eager to know more…
See you!

Hello,

So, you really don't have to worry, on the contrary, it's nice to see that others are also here to lend a hand.

We can't stay in front of our screens 24/7, and there's more to life than just computing. It's a very good thing to be able to take turns :-)

Regarding Nero Vision, I would like to point out a problem I have with version 7.0.1.2 of Nero.

I can't use anything other than avi files on the Nero Vision editing table. All the other extensions that are supposed to work (wmv, mpg, mov, etc.) are rejected with the message "cannot insert".

Thank you very much, Constant!!! And to save in DV-AVI format it's simple; I haven't tried it but I definitely plan to tackle it this afternoon....

As for me, I don't know which version I have, it just says Nero Vision Express 3. After that, I don't know how to import a video and how to export it in the best quality??? I admit I'm a bit lost...
As for adding audio, it works, and I managed to see where the fades are.
Sorry for taking up your patience, guys...
