Hello,
Thank you for helping me, I have a little problem with my Outlook.
After setting it up, when I try to send an email, the following error shows up: 0x800CCC78

this problem occurs for no rational explanation!!
Solution (in my case which should be quite general): in Outlook 2007 - go to Tools then Account Settings, select the account, go to More Settings, Outgoing Server tab, check My Outgoing Server requires authentication, check: Use same settings as my incoming mail server., then confirm and exit.
This has resolved the issue on my different accounts. (I'm using Orange)

I've been getting the same error since yesterday noon.
The task "xxxxxxxxxx - Sending" reported an error (0x800CCC78): "Unable to send the message. Please check the email address in the account settings. Server response: 550 5.1.0 Authentication required. Authentication Required. OFR102_402 [402]"
even though it was working fine for years.
I can no longer send emails, but I can receive them just fine.
My address is @wanadoo.fr.
Does anyone have an idea, the same problem?
