I read online that if it says Dolby Digital on the DVD, it works.

I'm okay with this in general for most DVD players...

BUT:
if I understand correctly.
there is an RCA output for each channel for 5.1...
that is, 6 "audio RCA" outputs:
( right front, left front, center, right rear, left rear, SUB )
in addition to the RCA for video, coaxial audio, ....

this is what I have, and in 90% of cases, (if not all cases, because there must be exceptions,...?), this configuration is paired with amplification of the outputs, not just pre-amplification..

to be sure, you need to check, that can be done easily.
Either by checking if there is a button or a volume knob directly on the DVD player...
or, and this is better,..., by looking directly at the RCA outputs at the back of the player..., the power to connect should be indicated there...

if the speakers are indeed studio monitors...
the impedance must be compatible... (HIFI anyway)

the only important thing is not to connect a power level that is too high compared to what is delivered by the amplifier in the player, which should not exceed 50 or 70W program in my opinion.
because we may tend to turn it up louder since the speakers may not necessarily saturate, risking overheating the amplifier...

if there are 6 outputs from the player for 5.1...

I don't know who wrote on the Net that the term "DVD Dolby Digital" proved that you could directly connect speakers from the device's output, but that's a serious mistake, unless EACH SPEAKER IS AMPLIFIED!

This indication simply means that the DVD player is equipped with a decoder stage of this type of cinema sound and that it provides the pre-amplified outputs of the separate channels.

Warning: I specifically mentioned that the audio cinch outputs must be amplified.

It remains to be checked whether the home cinema speakers you have are equipped with amplifiers (active speakers).

The "volume knob" on your device allows you to adjust the output signal levels from your player.

When speakers can be connected to the outputs of a device, you will systematically find one or more terminals marked in red and black as well as the impedance of the speakers to connect (except on very low-cost entry-level devices).

But if you care about sound quality, you will hardly be able to avoid purchasing an amplifier tuner with its speakers that has the inputs where you can connect, among other things, the outputs from your device and that will allow you to enjoy real cinema sound.
