screen goes black but PC stays on Solved

Question

Here’s my problem, for the past 2 or 3 days my screen keeps turning off by itself (well, it shows "no signal") while my tower continues to run.
This issue happens when I watch a video file or when I start a game. To get the screen to turn back on, I have to reboot. Often, on the first reboot, the screen turns off after Windows loads, right when I reach the desktop. I have to turn off the PC for about a minute and turn it back on for the screen to come back on normally.

I’ve tried different things, I tested switching the display to my TV and have the same problem, I disassembled my PC to check that my card was properly seated and that the fan was running, and it was... I cleaned the fans but with no results... I haven't installed any software for 2 days. So I don’t see where the problem comes from (well, I have a slight idea about an overheating issue but which component???...). What do you think?

Processor: Athlon XP 2600+
OS: Win XP (SP1)
Graphics Card: GeForce FX 5600 128Mo
DDR: 1Go

The hardware is a little over 2 years old.

HI,

I think I found the solution:

Either your screen settings are incorrect (I had to set it to "Game" mode, I have a BenQ), for example, a refresh rate that your graphics card doesn't support.
Or there's an overheating problem and you need to clean the inside of the PC.
Finally, you should use MSI Afterburner which manages the cooling.

I still ended up finding this on another forum...

It advises to:
1. Start the PC + press F5.
2. Choose safe mode startup.
3. Perform a full scan with Ad-Aware
4. Eliminate all intruders!
5. Restart and defragment

Hi everyone!

So I see that the problem is with the ATI RADEON!!!
I have exactly the same issue and I don't know how to fix it...

1. Safe mode is absolutely USELESS... the screen still goes black :x
2. Cleaning the PC (dust and debris) simply fixes the "PC TURNING OFF BY ITSELF" issue
3. So my thorough analysis xD shows that the problem stems from the ATI RADEON drivers... therefore, the drivers need to be reinstalled

that's my conclusion...

I'm going to try that and I'll let you know if it works :)

Well, first of all, I don't think it's only a problem with the ATI cards; I have a G-FORCE 7300 and I have the same issue... coupled with a USB keyboard that sometimes turns off, requiring me to unplug/replug it countless times...

For your information, my PC is less than 6 months old, still under warranty, of course, but the manufacturer's customer service tells me there is a minimum delay of 7 weeks to send back the card...

My configuration:

P4 Celeron D 3.00 GHz
Asus P5GPL-X
Asus G-FORCE 7300 512 MB
1 GB DDR2 Corsair
80 GB Hitachi Serial-ATA HDD
XP SP2
19" 16/9 HANNS-G screen

Here are all the things I have done/checked: (for your information, my graphics card is PCI-E)

- Screen sleep mode: disabled (already was)
- Hibernate mode: disabled (already was)
- GPU energy-saving shutdown: disabled (already was)
- Hard drive sleep mode: disabled (already was)
- HDD energy-saving shutdown: disabled (already was)
- Full disk scan with antivirus: done (no viruses detected)
- Full disk scan in normal mode then in safe mode with AD-AWARE: done (no malware found)
- DirectX update: done (latest as of June 2007)
- Graphics card driver update: done
- Temperature check for possible overheating: done = graphics card at 80°, fan not running.... (targeted problem!)
- Dust cleaning inside the case: done (not much dust)
- Port change with adapter for keyboard switching from USB to PS/2: done (problem solved!)

That's pretty much everything; I think I've localized the problem, but I still wanted to tell you all the manipulations I've done just in case some hadn't thought of them :)

For my part, I think it's more likely to be the motherboard, because between the GPU, the USB keyboard, the DVD burner, and the external hard drive: conflicts upon conflicts!

I'm going to try to find another graphics card to definitely pinpoint the issue (motherboard or graphics card).

The screen only goes off when I play online with World of Warcraft, and most of the time an ALT+F4 brings the screen back. But it also happens that the screen turns off while I’m surfing the net...

In any case, the backup solution of the fan blowing towards the tower is super effective! However, as soon as I turn off the fan, it crashes within 20 minutes.

It's not the screen since it happens on both the new and the old screen.

Verdict: definitely a ventilation problem. My new graphics card doesn't have a built-in fan compared to the old one, and that's great for winter but not for summer :p  So I got a small fan for €9 that cools the graphics card directly. Since then, everything's been fine.  Good luck to you all. Zeb.

Hello  I feel like my problem is a bit different. I have an HP Pavilion mx70 with 256MB DDR, Windows XP 2000  For over six months, the screen turns on, then off, then back on without affecting the tower, which works. It's like a cut; sometimes I have to give it a hit and boom, it turns back on. It makes light signals, shows light bands before turning off, but it turns back on when you touch it somewhere.  When I'm working on it and I move the table, it can also turn off.  I don't know where the problem comes from.  At first, I thought it was due to downloads on Emule, I removed it and cleaned up, but nothing.  Does anyone have an idea?  Thanks

WELL.... here I am again!! After a few days without any problems, it suddenly started again. The backup method of using the big fan aimed directly at the tower still works, but boy, the electricity bill!!  My customer service is on vacation until the end of August, but as soon as they return, I’ll bring in my tower, and I'll keep you updated...  nonsense: if your screen turns back on with flickers, it's the screen itself that is faulty... I've also noticed that with another monitor, I no longer have those annoying pop-up windows from Explorer. It's strange. I think this type of monitor has a manufacturing defect; it's an HP Pavilion mx70. Is it expensive to repair?

actually, I just removed and properly reinserted the graphics card.
so I don't know if that's it, but since then it's been working!

I thought I had already done it, but actually I was confusing it with the memory sticks lol, (no mocking please...) until my friend explained exactly what the graphics card was (the big flat thing perpendicular to the case or the motherboard for those who don't know, lol)

otherwise, I still think that zeb isn't completely wrong, and that heat could be a factor too, because my graphics card doesn't have a built-in fan either, which isn't great.
but I do have a fan higher up at the back of the case that sucks a lot because sometimes it makes a noise when it’s hot.

anyway, you should still try this thing about properly repositioning the graphics card (if removable), it could perhaps help who knows...

Hello again  My problem is solved, I bought a new Geforce card with a fan on it. While removing the old one to install the new card, I realized that the fan on my ATI Radeon was blocked by dust. Hello, I had the same problem, the screen turning off by itself, but now I haven't done anything and when I turn on the PC, the screen shuts down immediately while the tower is still running... the problem has worsened... I'm pretty sure it's a virus that's overheating the graphics card and that's why a fan can make your screen work again but for how long since it's getting worse!!!! So be careful. Hello,  For some time now, I’ve been experiencing the same problem as DESCHAMPS.  My screen displays nothing (black screen) but remains on (the power works, and the indicator LEDs confirm it). hello, since I changed my power supply (a 500 watt) and motherboard, the screen now goes dark with "no signal". my opinion: 420 watts were insufficient to power everything. the graphics card requires additional internal power, and when the power supply struggles, the card is not adequately powered. I think (?) that was it. some power supplies say "420 watts" but in practice it's probably less... a good seasonic s12 500 watt power supply, and it's good and stable.

There are several things to test if you have this issue!

1. Clean the PC as it might be dust
2. Test with another monitor (to see if the issue is not with the screen)
3. Same for the Graphics Card (update the drivers as well)
4. Check the component temperatures (Everest Home Edition from Lavalys)
5. (What I did) My RAM was not properly connected and that was apparently the cause even though I don't quite understand why....

So far I have read all the reactions (and there are plenty!!!) but I haven't found a solution to my problem, which is normal since my issue has the same symptoms but arose differently...  So, a week ago I moved just before I loaded my PC; everything was working perfectly (it remained in place until the last minute!) and 45 minutes later, after plugging it back in but in a different house (I don't see what difference that makes! lol), I turned on my PC and it worked very well, but when I turn on my monitor, it only stays on for less than 5 seconds and goes into sleep mode without me even accessing anything. When I unplug the monitor from the PC, it magically lights up to tell me "No video signal" (thanks, very thoughtful, I could have figured that out myself!!! lol) I really don't understand since I was super careful when transporting it...  I hope someone can find a solution to my problem because I'm out of creativity and it's really starting to annoy me...  Basically, someone could save my PC because it's about to go out the window ^^   P.S.: On top of that, I'm also afraid something might happen to it because I have at least 6000 photos on it with some super important documents... I think I've found the source of the problem, the beautiful ATI RADEON have shitty fans. Indeed, I took apart my case and my fan is no longer working. However, right now I'm playing with the case open, so that the air can circulate and my PC is crashing less often. So I think the problem doesn't come from the power supply but really from the Radeon technology and its super cheap plastic fans that can't even hold up.

No, the problem with all ATI cards is the fan; they put a not-so-great fan, and in a poorly ventilated PC, the graphics card shuts down as a safety measure.

It's not maybe, it's for sure, yesterday it was a bit hot at my place, I overclocked my GPU, then I played Halo 2 which is quite demanding in terms of performance, and bam, the screen went black, and just before that I checked and the card was at 80 degrees. After that, I played again without overclocking and well, no problem.  So for me, the solution is to add some fans so that the air circulates better, that's what I did a few days ago and since then, no problems except for yesterday.

Hi, I just installed my PowerColor ATI RADEON HD 3850 card  The problem I have is that when I start a game, for example: Rappelz or Reunion X3  there's a display issue, meaning that when I see the game's homepage, the images are misaligned. Well, let me explain my case to you!!  I changed my setup about 6 months ago!!  Motherboard P5B Intel Core Duo E4600 Graphics card GeForce 8800 2x1GB of memory Twin View OS XP   So I also have the black screen issue, but the tower still runs fine. So I have to reboot the PC, but be careful, I have to wait 1 to 2 minutes otherwise the PC won't reboot. I tested by buying a 620W Corsair power supply --> which didn’t change anything. I tested my memory --> which seems fine. I tested with an ATI 3870 card --> and the VPU recover activates, so I still have a black screen, but I don't have to reboot the PC (well, less often than with my GeForce 8800, probably thanks to the VPU). So deducing that the error doesn't come from the graphics card, since 2 graphics cards were tested and the same crash!!  But what surprises me is that some days I'll play 2 or 3 hours without crashing, and some days it crashes every 10 minutes (computers are so logical ^^).  So final deduction, there’s only one element left, THE MOTHERBOARD...!!!  If some of you have done tests like me, let me know your opinion, I'm really interested!!!!

Hey there :)  I’ve already posted and I’m following the topic a bit :)  Here are the tests that I’ve done:  Changing the graphics card > Problem unresolved RAM exchange (I have two 512 MB RAM sticks) > Problem solved for a while ^^ Power supply test > OK Screen exchange > Problem persists.  Formatting > The PC works perfectly for a few months!  I therefore conclude that it’s the motherboard that’s causing the problem :) I plan to change it in the next few days... It all started when I wanted to update my graphics card (Radeon X1600); since then, my screen goes to sleep and then the computer reboots. A little while ago, I reset the PC, made all the necessary updates, but the problem still persists, with the only difference being that now the computer no longer reboots.

If your screen turns off by itself, it's a repair overheating issue. I have the same problem with games closing by themselves. You have 3 choices: format it, repair it, or remove the drivers one by one and then reinstall them to normal. If that doesn't work, contact me at youngkilla132@hotmail.com.

Hello everyone  I've had "the same" problem for a year. Little by little, my screen started to turn off (not the tower) randomly, after about 15/20 minutes or even an hour. Then it got closer together to become unbearable, like every two minutes. The diode remains green for two seconds once the screen is off, then turns yellow (like in sleep mode), but I have to turn off the screen for 5/10 minutes for it to turn back on (only to turn off again a few minutes later). I've tried everything, formatting, reinstalling drivers, changing the graphics card (but they were both NVIDIA GeForce 6). Nothing works in the long run; it temporarily resolved the issue for a few days, sometimes not more, then it wouldn't turn on at all (green diode for 2 seconds, then permanent yellow diode) So I concluded that it was the screen. I changed the screen; it worked for a few months, then exactly the same thing happened again. I started to think that the configuration (NVIDIA drivers or others) of the computer was damaging the screens (bad refresh rate information or resolution or I don't know). I still tried a lot of things: cleaning, reconnecting, reconfiguring, reinstalling, etc. In short, the same path, the screen was dead again after a few weeks. I retrieved a third (and last) screen that was working perfectly before I connected it to my famous PC. As before, the screen worked fine for 2/3 months, but I felt that the display was struggling at times, with white flashes when opening a window or changing resolution (games), etc. And now, once again, it starts to go into sleep mode, but impossible to wake it up; the tower works, the desktop does not change (I turn off the screen for a few minutes and turn it back on, and the desktop appears for a few minutes, and as soon as I launch something like a Firefox window or another, it happens again, and so on). I am now convinced that it is not the screen, and I would like to find a solution to avoid permanently damaging my third screen. If it doesn't come from the graphics card, what could it be? Could NVIDIA drivers set the card incorrectly? I've already tried using the (old) manufacturer's drivers, but that only solves the issue for a few days, if that. Does anyone have any idea? Found a solution? Could the motherboard (the only thing I can't test) be responsible? However, the screen remains powered and the computer is on. I also note that the PC hesitates before it bugs. I've tried everything: updated drivers, unplugging my graphics card with cleaning, changing my connections, scanning with Avast (trojan found and destroyed), testing with another screen; all the things I could find: without success... I have Vista, an 8800 GT, everything is well connected, I've reset the settings on my power supply, I've removed the overclocking from my processor, I've set everything back to default... It should also be noted that I have an HP W2007V 20-inch since last May and everything was working well...I also reformatted my system 2 weeks ago and everything was working well too... Hi, I have the same problem. My PC runs all day and nothing happens. I install the game World of Warcraft, still no issues... great, the updates are happening but nothing is going on. I start the game, I'm ready to play, the contracts are displayed, I accept them and then bam, the screen goes black with NO SIGNAL... well, I won't let that get me down. I restart my PC, change the resolution... I restart my game and it's good, I reaccept the contracts and then I'm taken to the login page "account name, password" and bam... the screen goes black. But here's the good joke, I can't access my system anymore, the screen stays on no signal -_-! ... what to do? I'm fed up, I've tried everything. My PC is NEW, my graphics card is a Nvidia 9500GT, I'm connected via VGA, I've also tried with DVI and that doesn't work either. I just reformatted, so the virus theory seems unlikely. Can someone help me, please?

So following my previous message, I solved the problem. For now. I did it like this: 1) unplug all the computer cables  2) open the computer  3) remove my graphics card  4) clean everything (especially no dust!) while disconnecting and reconnecting the RAM sticks.  5) reconnect all the cables, then reset the BIOS settings to default (my processor was overclocked)  6) go to control panel / system and maintenance / power options / check normal usage, and in the power settings set the display to turn off after 20 minutes and put the computer to sleep after 1 hour.  7) Restart. THERE YOU GO!!!!   My hypotheses are: 1) dust in the graphics card connections that was causing it to overheat  2) graphics card fan struggling to turn due to dust === overheating  3) overclocking and power settings too high === overheating  4) virus that overheats the components.   For my part, I think hypotheses 3 and 1 are the most likely; too bad it had held up for 1 year and I think it must have progressively damaged my power supply.   In any case, it clearly comes from an overheating issue of the components (especially the graphics card) so the computer protects itself by displaying "no signal" while still running but in low power mode. Hello, Here is my configuration before anything else;  http://ma-config.com/AfficherResume-73689-0.html  Here’s a brief history of my life with my PC;  On my computer purchased about 5 years ago, here’s what I’ve changed to date; my screen once I had a Dell now, I recently bought a memory stick (1 GB and I had 2 sticks of 500 MB; I took it out and put it back in with nimble fingers...let's see if that’s not my problem), changed the video card, changed the power supply. I had already reformatted it myself and didn’t know that I shouldn’t use FAT32 instead of NTFS. Well, I left it like that, reinstalled my drivers, and changed a few things in my hardware. I downloaded all the driver updates except for the SATA controller.  Here is my routine; when I open my computer I have 2 options (that’s normal) to open Windows Media Center or Windows XP (there are seconds that go by). It's always been like that, anyway I don’t think that’s the problem. Then there’s the possibility to press F something to start in safe mode; sometimes Windows starts correctly and I can access my computer just fine, I play games like WoW or Fallout 3, anyway games that take a lot of resources to play. Often no problem.  But.....  randomly.... that’s where I don’t understand anymore.... the screen goes off, the green light turns yellow, my computer (my tower) keeps running. I wait, I reset, it doesn’t work. I have to do a “wild” shut down by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Then I have disk verification due to disk integrity (pale blue screen)  Sometimes Windows starts correctly and sometimes the screen shuts off  The actions I’ve undertaken; 1 I’ve done several searches on various forums, I’ve read, read, and reread I downloaded the drivers for the ATI Radeon HD3800 video card or other drivers that I hadn’t updated, I installed and did; driver cleaner pro, CCleaner, scanned computer for viruses, I think it’s my motherboard that might be overheating and sometimes shuts down the screen to save itself, because I have no peripheral conflicts displayed in my system. I had the same problem. For my part, I solved it very easily: I vacuumed the dust that had invaded my ventilation grilles and my PC. It was therefore a heat issue... there you go, it took me two minutes ;)

Well... great............. Someone welcome me to the club!!! xD  I bought my new PC on materiel.net, the I-Game, and I received it today, but of course, it has that famous screen problem where it doesn't receive "power from the computer" like this.... My configuration here: https://www.materiel.net/  But the worst part for me in all this... is that it's brand new (I haven't even had the chance to enjoy this damn thing :((((( ) and also that I haven't installed my operating system on it yet so... I'm in deep trouble........ no drivers to update, nor the operating system to update or even to reformat the PC! (It's brand new)  So your virus hypotheses seem unlikely to me, but rather the graphics card (the GPU seems weird too, logically it shouldn't work at all?!) or some cables or even the motherboard.  As for overheating, I don't really believe that since the temperature is at 35° to 40° when I restart it and there are no hot spots on the horizon when I feel my computer.

Hi, my brother-in-law has an Acer M1610 desktop PC. I found out why it was shutting down after about half an hour of use (often the screen would go blank with "no signal" displayed but the tower was still running; we had to reboot it by pressing the power button): the thermal paste between the fan and the CPU was completely dry and had almost disappeared. I removed the remaining paste on the CPU and the aluminum of the fan and replaced it with new one. And since I've put everything back together, ensuring the aluminum part of the fan is well adhered to the CPU: no more problems. The PC runs smoothly now (no more unexpected shutdowns). The cause was that the PC heated up incredibly fast because there was hardly any thermal paste left, so the safety mechanism shut down the PC to avoid damaging everything inside. I hope this helps anyone experiencing the same issue. Good luck to you all. ;-)

Same problem for me.  Symptoms: - Screen that goes to sleep by itself, with the PC still running - Screen freezes then reappears with a message "VPU Recover ... blabla" - Screen freezes and shows me a blue screen with ati2dvag.dll infinite loop - When I restart my PC, the colors switch to 8 bits instead of 16, which results in a poor image, but it seems to work better that way.  Config: - Win XP / ATI Radeon 9250  No viruses, the PC has worked well for 3-4 years without configuration changes (just an additional hard drive)  Driver update, screen change, nothing helps.

I solved the problem. I set the AGP speed from 8x to 4x after reinstalling the driver by downloading Catalyst and now there are no more issues. I struggled to find the solution :/ 1) Download site http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.4.1 2) Choose the driver according to your graphics card and download 3) Once installed, launch Catalyst Control Center 4) Advanced View 5) Graphics Settings tab - Click on the SMARTGART menu 6) Lower the AGP speed  There you go.

For several months now, my screen has been turning off but not the tower. At first, I thought it was the graphics card or the screen! When I watch a video, the screen turns off like in most of the answers here! Except that for me, it's not the computer that's hot, but rather cold because when I turn on my PC, one second later the screen turns off. So after I turn on my PC and press the delete key several times, I get into the BIOS without the screen turning off, as if there was no more problem. But when I restart my PC, I get to the Windows loading screen, and the screen turns off again =/! Later, I had the idea to block the air intake with a sock to heat up the computer, and magically I was able to access the Windows desktop! Since I found this, I can use MSN, the internet, etc.! But still not videos; otherwise, the screen turns off immediately! One day, I thought I could listen to music since it comes from the graphics card! But I have the same issue as when I watch a video! So the problem doesn’t seem to come from the graphics card but from the sound card or even worse, the motherboard!!! I also tried to flash my BIOS! It could fix several problems, but it's impossible! The motherboard is protected against BIOS flashing, and there’s no jumper to move; it’s super annoying =/ Please help me; I don't know what to do anymore!!

Hello Same here, all of a sudden my screen often turns black when I’m playing a game and I can’t do anything, I have to reboot and on top of that it often starts badly, the screen stays black too, so I have to restart the machine  I will check everything and clean it, we’ll see. I have the same problem, the screen goes off while the computer is on, and it says "no input signal."  This issue occurs intermittently, but especially when I watch videos on YouTube, particularly HD videos.  I have to restart my PC by turning it off with the power button.  I have 2 DDR2 memory sticks, and when I remove one of them, the screen of my computer doesn't turn off as often.  Moreover, when I put both sticks in, the screen often doesn’t even turn on, or if by miracle it does turn on, most of the time I can't even get to the session opening before the screen goes black.  However, with 1 stick of RAM, it works normally, except when I watch HD videos or visit sites with a lot of flash ads, then it turns off, black screen and the PC still on.  I have already tried with new memory sticks, same issue. I have 4 slots for sticks on my motherboard, I can place them in any slot as long as there is only 1; it works. As soon as there are 2, it doesn’t work anymore or only for a few seconds.  I also want to point out that I’ve tried the memory in dual channel and single channel, and the symptoms remain the same: 1 stick works quite well except for the HD videos or a few random cut-offs, and 2 sticks really don’t work at all.  I have no idea where this problem comes from; if anyone has an idea, thank you.

Good evening,  I have a bit of the same kind of problem.  I bought my computer almost 2 years ago. Since then, I've been playing The Sims 3 along with a lot of expansions and kits. Everything has been working fine for months. However, for the past few weeks, when I launch the game, after about 3 minutes the screen shows "no signal," but the tower remains on. I have to reboot.  I have several games that demand a lot from the computer, like The Sims Medieval + Noble and Pirate, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, etc., but the bug only occurs when I launch The Sims 3.  Avast detects no viruses. I have defragmented. I uninstalled the objects I had downloaded. I completely uninstalled The Sims and then reinstalled it fully and partially (without the expansions and kits). The problem persists.

Hello,
I've been having the same problem as you for a month now: black screen, tower always running, choppy sounds.
This happens only when I play games; I can browse the Internet and play Minecraft and FIFA 12, but the rest triggers the symptoms. I've run several antivirus scans with: Ad Aware, Avira AntiVir, and Malwarebytes.
EVEREST shows a temperature around 33°.
I haven't tried opening the computer because I'm 14 and I'm afraid I'll break everything. I wanted to know if there was another solution because I have no more ideas...

Hi, I think I have the technique to fix this issue  You just need to start the computer and spam F9 to reset your computer as if it were "coming out of the factory"  The reboot takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the computer  The most recommended but also the most annoying thing is to leave NO trace of your "old" computer (before the reboot) because the problem could very well come from some software or any file  But still, ALWAYS get the opinion of a specialist (your after-sales service, for example)  I warn you that this technique may not work if the problem comes from your hardware (broken graphics card, faulty fan)  Anyway, good luck and let me know if it worked!

Hello everyone,  I had the same problem as you after changing my graphics card: switching from an ATI Radeon HD 5770 to a 6950.  Windows was stable, except in games where I lost the display after less than a minute. Linux was stable, except when watching movies where I also lost the display after a variable amount of time. In both cases, I sometimes had to wait before restarting the machine lest I would have no display.  I first thought it was a power supply problem. I replaced my 430 W PSU with a 750 W one. It didn't solve the problem.  Ultimately, the solution came from changing the outlet. Until now I was connected to an electrical outlet WITHOUT GROUND. Since I connected to an extension cord plugged into a bathroom outlet WITH GROUND, I haven’t had any problems.  For your information, my parents had a similar problem with another machine. It would systematically go into standby until we thought about the ground connection. Since then, they have also had no issues.  So you might say: before, with the 5770 it worked. I don't have an answer except that maybe the problem is more sensitive when the consumed power increases.  In summary: for those who have this issue of display loss or instability (which was the case for my parents where the failure was more global and concerned the entire PC going into standby) and whose machine is not plugged into an electrical outlet with a ground connection, try PLUGGING INTO A GROUND OUTLET.
