I have this error when starting up a computer (HP Compaq nx9030): "104-unsupported wireless network device detected. System halted. Remove device and restart."
What could be the cause of this error? What can be done to remove it? Thank you

I clarify my response:
This error message means that there is a wifi card (mini-pci) in the computer that is not on the "whitelist" of accepted cards by the machine's BIOS.
Either this card was added, and it is enough to physically remove it: the computer will work, without the built-in wifi, which will then need to be replaced with a pc-card adapter, for example.
Or this card was in place and working, thanks to a special version of the BIOS. In which case, it was sufficient to update the BIOS for the card to simultaneously (re-)become a "foreign" card rejected by the system. Therefore, it would be necessary to reinstall this special version of the BIOS compatible with the card, if it existed...
I myself have this problem, having purchased a Broadcom card that is not compatible with my HP-Compaq nc6120, and I am actually looking for the recipe to "hack" the BIOS to avoid the infamous "error 104" when I try to install the wireless card...

However, it manifested itself oddly. Yesterday, 2011-02-07, my computer (Pavilion DV 4000) started freezing.
I tried restarting it several times, but sometimes it completed its startup, and other times it stopped halfway, not always in the same place. So I did a Windows reinstall to find out that the wireless device was not working.
I reinstalled the drivers (all with the original disks) several times and finally it seemed to be working. But as soon as I went on the WEB via WI-FI, it started freezing again.
So I disabled the WI-FI card and I am currently accessing the WEB with a direct link...
The question is how can a wireless card from a laptop bought in 2006 become foreign to the computer when it has been functioning well all this time???
